I told him that his analogy did not apply because I am not selling real estate. He told me that they were not going to do anything to compensate me. Don't spend your money advertising with The Los Altos Town Crier, they just want to fill space.

(It's hard to say exactly how many issues I have; they're oftentimes all mixed up with other printed matter.) Started by legendary artist Robert Williams in 1994 Juxtapoz covers all kinds of low-brow, graffiti, street art, comics, custom cars, tattoo and outsider art. I don't know how many years I've subscribed but it's been many. And though they've cut back from monthly issues to fatter digest sized quarterlies, there's never a question of reupping when I get that notice saying my subscription is about to run out. (I've even shelled out a bit extra for the subscription and a T-shirt deal Jux used to offer with an impressive array of designs from different artists to choose from.) Juxtapoz features outstanding photography, in-depth interviews, often from people who've known their interviewees for a very long time, guides to cities that go beyond the usual touristy stuff, advice for up and coming artists, the lowdown on the latest art books and a heads up on mural festivals. Sometimes there's a discernable theme covered in an editor's letter at the beginning and sometimes I can't see a thread between that issue's featured artists but it's fascinating nonetheless. I could try to name drop a sample list of some of the artists that have been featured in Juxtapoz but it just seems gratuitous and obnoxious. It would go on for a couple paragraphs worth of text at least and later I'd be kicking myself that I forgot so and so. I've learned about hundreds of artists on account of this magazine. If you're at all into non-stodgy contemporary art you really can't go wrong with Juxtapoz.

I hope this little paper endures because it is the among the few papers covering issues and concerns of the neighborhood. With the Mission Dispatch on "vacation" since December of 2009, due to the economic recession, the Mission District and surrounding areas has few voices for the community. And, as far as I can see, mainstream media does not provide much in local news, especially at the neighborhood or grass roots level. Also, El Reportero features news that impacts the entire Bay Area. It's coverage is wide. And, I noticed that it does make an effort to present news that is often missed or ignored by mainstream sources. He was very helpful and quick to adjust his conversation with the typical bar, clothing retailer or whatever to understand the needs specific to a 24 hour locksmith service. He gave me a very thorough and very reasonable price list and we hammered out a size and daily run deal. He asked me a few questions and he said that he'd have his graphic arts department look at my web site for design cues and come up with a proposed piece. What they gave me was so near perfect that I only had to make two minor adjustments. For those that don't know - that's incredible. They get it. They very efficiently put all the information that I wanted listed as well as a fairly good print of my bird logo for a great price. All the while, Benjamin was brainstorming and coming up with quality ways to maximize exposure and minimize cost. I mean, come on, don't you remember reading the funnies (cartoons to other generations) in the Sunday paper in color? Or thumbing through the pink section of the Chronicle to see the latest concert announcements. Back to Sing Tao, my family purchased a package subscription with the Chronicle and the competing Chinese newspaper through ST for several years. Yes, we've had a few hiccups over the years with missed paper deliveries, sometimes due to selfish bus waiting passengers who decide to grab ours to read on their rides to school or work. Wet newspapers, no biggie as they can't seecontrol the weather. Well, starting Tuesday 9/1st, we only received the two Chinese periodicals. I called their customer service number which went to automatic voicemail for both English and Cantonese options. Leaving messages about this Wednesday and Thursday, I never received any callback. Thursday afternoon, I emailed them to get a late night reply in Chinese; sorry, I am not Chinese literate so I asked a friend to read and translate it. Evidently, they terminated their partnership with the Chronicle effective 8/31st and listed the Chronicle subscription information to order service directly with them. No prior notice, English or Chinese. Only after four missed papers (5 counting Saturday), I ordered a subscription online by credit card; hope it starts Sunday or I'll have to pick up a copy at the neighborhood store. Sing Tao, I hope you take my comments to heart in valuing your loyal customers and keeping us informed of service changes. I understand we are in shelter in place, but a less forgiving customer may just say 'to heck with it'.
