Walked first nine holes on the East (public) course today. Course is well laid out and walkable. Some of the fairways needed a little work, but the putting greens were in good shape. Greens fees were reasonable. I will definately play here again. read more

Since my Uncle was in town and it was Father's day, my family chose to take a trip down memory lane and play a round of golf here. When I first started out playing golf, this was the first golf course I ever played at so there was some nice nostalgia. If this is your first time here, please be careful when crossing the round from the parking lot to the clubhouse. Cars speed through all the time and its a quick turn with poor visibility. You have your standard putting green that overlooks the 18th hole and a nice little patio where golfers can get food/drinks at the turn. I will say that the staff at the patio were very nice and deserve a nice tip if you get anything. As for the course itself, it's a nice little layout but it's very narrow. If you feel like your golf game is erratic and you are hooking/slicing the ball a ton, it'll be a nightmare. I hooked it off the first tee to the next fairway over and someone from the OTHER side of that fairway on another hole went and picked up my ball because they sliced their ball over there. We were there for an afternoon tee time but my god I can imagine a five hour round or more in the morning with people waiting to chip their shots back in their own fairway. Unless you're a very consistent golfer, I almost guarantee you'll find yourself in that situation at least one point in your round. Overall, my family and I ended up having a good time at this course. It's not the most challenging or the most beautiful course you'll ever play but it's worth giving a shot if you're in the area. read more

I played in an outing at this course yesterday and we had a blast. I've probably played here about 12 times over the past 10 years and I've always had fun. Probably had so much fun because every time I've played here it's been an outing where I probably indulged in one or two adult beverages. The outing yesterday was for a friend's church and they do it RIGHT for this event...full brunch buffet-not too over the top, but much more than continental...and a fully catered buffet dinner and open bar. The dining staff is phenomenal and the food, well the food was delicious and plentiful. Thy raise a LOT of money for the church at this event. As for the course, it was in excellent shape after two full days of rain with very limited standing water. Since it had rained for two days, the greens were pretty slow, but that was expected anyway, but overall the course was in great condition. Unfortunately, the course lost a number of trees during Hurricane Sandy, but other than taking away some nice scenery it didn't seem to affect play. Amazingly, our foursome didn't lose a ball all day...especially since the beer on the course was covered by our entry fees-we got our money's worth. In August 2009 Golf Digest Magazine gave the Knoll West the #1 municipal course rating in the state of New Jersey!!!! The course is pretty old (established in 1929) and a fairly short par 70 playing only about 6475 from the whites and 6,752 yards from the blues tees. The website says that the course is virtually unchanged since its opening other than a couple of minor renovations. The course is also semi-private with a very affordable fees, but I think they still have a waiting list. There's also a sister course here (Knoll East), but it's a bit of a hard hat course-very cheap, short, and tough to get a tee time, but not a bad place to just work on your game. Overall, a great day with friends, even if I didn't play particularly well. It isn't my favorite course, but it's up there-especially for an outing. read more

I got married here a few weeks ago, and they did a very nice job. The location is beautiful, the food was fantastic (they blew us away with their cocktail hour, main courses, and especially the Parisian dessert room), and the staff is very accommodating. The only negative part of the venue is that their bridal suite is tiny. We had a very large bridal party and could only fit about 4-5 people in the suite comfortably, but we knew this going into it and we were prepared for it, so we just planned on not spending any time in that room. I had 2 little issues with the place, which is why I can't give them 5 stars, but I would still definitely recommend getting married there. First, they wouldn't let us rehearse there until the day of the wedding, and by the time they were ready to rehearse some of our guests had already arrived and were in the waiting room, so they took the bridal party to the ceremony area but said I couldn't come because guests might see me. I gave them the order of the bridal party, but they ended up switching it around and didn't have the bridal party walk down in the order I gave them. The only other problem was that we paid for top shelf open bar. My friend asked me what I wanted to drink and I told them Grey Goose and Soda. My friend came back from the bar and said, sorry they said they don't have Grey Goose. When I went up to the bartender and asked why they didn't have it she quickly replied "Oh I can get it if you really want it. It's just in the back." I looked around and they only had Titos and other Call brands out. They didn't have any top shelf brands showing and apparently were telling people they didn't have it when they were asking for it. This was extremely disappointing to me. Other than those two issues, the night went very smoothly and we got a lot of compliments on a great wedding! read more

We celebrated our 25th anniversary here and it was fantastic. Kyp, Dimitri, and the team were awesome. From the day we walked in to see the place to the day of the event, there was good communication and coordination. Everything turned out beautifully!! All our guests enjoyed the food, so hats off to the chefs!!! They did a great job. We had about 160 guests and had a coctail hour followed by a short ceremony & dinner/dancing in the big hall. Let's start with five stars and explain how we ended up with two deduct 1/2 star for credit card only.. not that big of a deal but just feel like it slows things down in the pro shop, especially for The guy who hates carrying his wallet on the course so he leaves it in his car. Deduct 1 1/2 stars for no cart girl or food or beverage utill late may.. I find it crazy how you charge $70 green fee and then tell me that you don't have at least!! a vending machine and I can just drink from the sink Deduct a star for the bossy/rude starter I mean know he's doing his job But it sets a bad example To new golfers which is probably a starters biggest hate in the world, maybe next time a "Hey guys i want you guys to have a good time out there today, let's get you guys going just please bring me your receipts when your ready to tee off" instead of "I NEED YOUR GUYS TICKETS NOW" I'm gonna leave a star for the good fairways And I'm gonna leave a star for the lightning fast greens I will not be visiting this course again, maybe if they start trying. read more

One of the best municipal courses that I have ever played. Members only in the morning. I played this past Saturday during a light rain, and was the only one out there, so I can't speak to the course's slowness issues, etc. This is one of the best public courses in the country. I grew up caddying at Chicago Golf Club (one of the top 40 golf courses in the world, and very similar to National Golf Links), and this nearly 100-year-old course has so much in common with those gems. The elevated false-front greens, cross bunkers, forced carrys, etc., are all hallmarks of classic courses Ira noted, "[The greens] aren't anywhere near flat. I don't mind the occasional multi-tiered green but these things are so tricked up." --- I simply disagree with that notion. Greens like those at Knoll West are a feature of many of the best courses in the world. I thought that the course itself was in great shape. So I highly recommend this course, although perhaps I wouldn't have had as great of an experience if I had to wait on every hole. There is so much strategy on this course. Aiming for the right part of the green so you don't have a big putt up a hill, aiming for the correct side of a fairway, decide what bunkers you want to fly. Wow. What a fantastic golf course. I can't wait to go back. read more

Once again the Golf Snob in me takes over... We playing a "Semi Private" course you would expect at least a good balance of service and conditions and for $80.00 on a Sunday Afternoon in NJ well this is unacceptable. Arrive to hill top club house where parking is at a premium and you end up parking down the hill in the lot good ways from course.. Drop off Clubs - take car down walk back up the hill NOT A GOOD START. 1:00 PM Time booked through Golf now.. and we chip and put a bit but there is no driving range which is strike 1. Get in line for our tee time and we end up going off about 15 minutes late.... seems some members arrived slipped the Starter a few and an extra time was inserted WALLAH we are behind. Hooked up with 2 Nice guys along with my playing partner so that was good. We followed two groups of players I'd say Group 1 was fairly advanced if not methodically slow while the group in front of us had no care in the world that they were 3 holes behind after a few holes. Course itself was OK... plush fairways with little roll with lots of forced burn / bunker carries on TSHOT - Blue tees played long... lots of long irons / hybrids in. Rough extremely long and difficult. Bunkers Terribly maintained all I can say. Greens UGH SLOW and BUMPY Bad Combo. With their size and undulation they could have been great but what a disappointment like putting on Velcro. Bottom line SAVE YOUR $$$$ ok layout with no practice facility, rangers that did not move pace of play 5 hours 15 minutes is a joke. an Greens that were downright awful. Saturday night I'm with friends, and in about 5 seconds we decided we wanted to play golf the next day. I suggested Knoll East for proximity and because I'd played there several times before. So we made online tee times very easily for 2:12 PM, and we were good to go. That's right. A 2:12 PM tee time for 3 on a clear-weather Sunday, just like that. So I'm driving down 287 at 1:30 to get there, and traffic is STOPPED for a major accident 5 miles down. I soon realize I won't make it, but my other two friends do. I call and tell them I won't make it for 2:12, and ask if they can push the time back. They called me back and said it wasn't a problem and that when I arrived they could send us out. I finally arrived at 4 PM, went in and paid my greens fee, and came outside to find my cart delivered to my bag waiting for me. Starter greeted me with a big smile and said "Glad you finally made it!! You guys are next on the tee, have a good round!" Most other courses would not be so accommodating. We play our 9, and it's now 6:30 PM. We wanted to play 18 but in a race against daylight with a slow foursome ahead of us, it wasn't looking promising. I asked the starter what time we had to be off the course, and he said "Around 8:15 we'll ask you to head out. You want to play 18 don't you?" I said we did, and so he said "You can go play the front 9 again so long as you don't mind playing the same holes again." We took him up on that offer and had the whole front 9 to ourselves, and holed out on 18 (AKA 9) with daylight to spare. Big thank you to the starter for saving our Sunday of golf and making the day enjoyable. For the course itself, it's really nothing all-world, but it's in good shape and a great value. Bring your hard hat though, despite the nets that divide the holes that are near each other, you'll have half a dozen stray shots find your fairway. It's still a great place to go when you decide to play 18 on a whim, and you can almost always walk right on. Give it a chance if you're in the area and like affordable golf. read more

I was looking for a last minute round last Friday and grabbed a tee time at Knoll East on GolfNow. There are banquet facilities on the street while the golf activities are around back. The pro shop is very spartan and shabby looking and could use some sprucing up and a great deal more equipment for sale. The course itself was in okay shape. The fairways were a bit shaggy and I found it odd that although it hadn't rained substantially for a while, the fairways and greens were extremely soft and slow with the fairways bordering on muddy on some holes. This led to not a lot of runout on drives and very heavy approach shots. The greens had recently been punched and it definitely affected putting. Do not trust the posted yardages. They are always longer than the actual yardages. Also a ranger is needed as my threesome played the front in under 2 hours but it took almost three on the back as we caught the group and rode them the whole way in (despite them having space in front of them). One plus that I will comment on is the outdoor snack bar grill. Accessible prior to playing, at the turn, and afterward they have a full array of beverages and a guy grilling. There are also tables to sit out and enjoy a quick drink and a bite after playing. read more

I played the Knoll for the 2nd time today. Course is in really nice condition, plays very nice tee to green and is a fair test but I have to say the greens are a major issue. The greens themselves are in good shape, roll nice but they aren't anywhere near flat. I don't mind the occasional multi-tiered green but these things are so tricked up. If you are not on the same side of the green as the pin have fun navigating the various tiers, mounds, ridges and other obstacles on the green. If this course had fair greens, I'd be happy to play here all the time. Still like the course (and I played really well) but I do find that I talk to myself alot more than usual walking off those greens. read more
