I had not been to church in many years and frankly wasn't too hyped about 'joining' a church, but decided to give it a try. To my surprise, St. Michaels was very different than other Catholic parishes I've attended. This church is diverse, vibrant and welcoming. The homilies/sermons are very powerful and uplifting. It didn't take long before we decided to call St. Michaels our parish. We continued to attend Mass on a regular basis, and eventually celebrated the sacrament of marriage at this church. The spiritual guidance that I have received throughout the years from our pastor, Monsignor Eddie Tolentino has helped me tremendously in my relationship with God. I participated on finance and trustee committees. I also was an officer with the women's group. We worked for the church and for the Board of Child Care located in Baltimore. We held rummage sales which helped buy the kitchen appliances. Faith is very important but so is commitment for a place to come to worship and care about each other, support each other in sickness and when death is coming. My son attended Sunday school at Hughes (he's almost eligible for social security so that tells you how long ago it was) My husband was buried from Hughes. Faith is important but there are the "no fun" jobs of the keeping the building, etc. from declining.

My…read morefaith is very much what has shaped me and Hughes United Methodist Church has been instrumental in developing this. Although I must sheepishly admit that I don't attend services consistently, Hughes was not just a church for me when I was growing up, it was a community of warmth. My very first time at Hughes, I was just a toddler. I was christened here, confirmed here, was an acolyte, in the handbell choir and also very active in the church's various youth groups. The number one message that I've taken with me from Hughes, is to treat others as you would like to be treated. I've pretty much applied this in just about every area of my life and it's kind of my golden rule. I've also seen how much Hughes will rally to help and support those that are part of the greater Hughes community. Services are in a relaxed atmosphere and although church attendance is a bit down, the heart is still there.

There are many conditions, including, Do not touch the person at the moment of death because even the most gentle touch Will be Extremely amplified. I'm assuming this includes closing someone's eyes for them. I would hate to think what electrical shock trying to start someone's heart would be like. Another condition is not to be crying Next to the person making them feel sad, also, to minimize the number of people near the person so to not confuse them. If someone has body odor they should not be near the dying person. Keep the area uncluttered so the person Will not be reminded of their earthly possessions. There were at least eight conditions altogether nobody remembers this lecture. I have not seen any supporting documents in the lotus sutra.

Adjacent to Catholic University of America, Trinity University and numerous other Catholic institutions, the Basilica's massive blue and gold dome soars high into the sky and can been seen for miles, with an equally grand bell tower at its side. The bells are very much in use today, and sound on the hour and quarter hours. It's the largest Roman Catholic Church in North America and one of the 10 largest churches in the world. That pretty much sums its up. Clearly, this is a very big place. There are many parts to the Basilica, and is impeccably maintained. A great neighbor, I might add (I live in the Northeast). (Bishop Thomas Shahan) Indeed, what a spectacular experience first-hand spiritual nourishment by attending masses in both the Upper Church and Crypt church (I had gone to the Sunday 4:30 p.m. & Friday Daily Mass at 12:10 p.m.), in addition to the highlight concert of the convention week that gave us a glimpse of the many expressions of music: from the 56 bells of the Knights Tower Carrillon, to the narly 10,000 pipes of the great organs - as well as the voices of the Choir of the Basilica joined by us attendees and the faithful of both locals & tourists in the DMV region! I was able to walk around the Basilica's perimeter, as well as adorn the grounds and peruse through the many side chapels depicting Mother Mary in all cultures and heritages that represent the great devotion to the Blessed Mother around the world! In addition, the Basilica is well-kept and well-preserved, as well as secured - thanks to the many docents and security personnel that keeps visitors safe! Did I mention free parking?! I definitely would want to keep coming back here as my travels allow me!

Even in the small groups they promote that feeling is not there either. I'm not sure if people are cynical, closed off from past hurts, overworked, or what, but it shows. It makes you want to keep a healthy distance. I think there is a lot of good here and many people here have hearts for God and for people. AND I can't help but notice that a chunk of them could use some serious attitude adjustments. It reflects poorly not only on them but on the church as well. I know it's hard to serve AND 2 Corinthians 9:6-7 shares that we should give cheerfully not reluctantly or under compulsion. This is not just money but time as well. Not following this scripture typically produces bitterness and bad attitudes. The Bible also states in Luke 6:45 that "out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks". I think it might be time for some heart checks. If you don't want to serve, don't or make it a point to get to a place where you can do it cheerfully. Ask the Holy Spirit to work in you, tap into it. It is not God's will for you to serve and exude negativity. I don't want to negate all the good the church does because it does do a lot of good and I did want to bring this to the forefront because it is an issue that should be spoken on. God Bless!
