Of all of the popular radio stations, KRNK seems the one that hasn't diminished severely in quality songs, but they seem to be focusing on some pop rock nowadays. Alternative metal still exists here, but its a lot more sparse than it used to be. The Portland music scene is not to be found here, as a majority of the song list is nationally produced with little local emphasis. The actual DJs are semi-entertaining but they have endured a bit of turnover (as do most stations) and the last batch was subpar at best. I was always appalled that they played Tai Mai Shu's Freestyle ("Tie My Shoe" - A mocking Chinese internet hit), which is hip hop and can be seen as racially insensitive. The change from Entercom to Radio.com and now Audacy ruined this station. They thought they could be sneaky and ditch all but one local DJ and replace the rest with Fake Greg in Seattle and Nichole Alvarez in LA. LA! Really? The music selection has gone downhill too. You can't tell me "It's different here," and then bust out "Smells Like Teen Spirit" as if it's been ages since I've heard a Nirvana song. Oh, corporate radio. Even in times of great uncertainty, I can always be assured that you always suck. Your Bottom Forty and Perfect Playlist programs are always a revelation, though. The woman who came on and did a theme about death totally made my day. And your 80's at Eight segment on Friday mornings introduced me to one of my theme songs for this year. So I know you and your misled alternative drones aren't complete robots. You know there's music out there to play and educate the masses. The death-rattle of my grandma's lice-riddled ferret is more soothing to my ears than this station. "It's different here"--it is, given that most rock stations don't have "Buffalo Soldier" on a loop. Here's a project--listen to Greg the DJ in the mornings, and use a sharp fingernail to scratch into your flesh every time he refers to himself. Dictionaries staring at themselves in the mirror are less self-referential. (wow, better let that one simmer for a while). And I don't give a scoop of cat litter about your cat, so quit talking about it. If your cat had any musical sense or pride it would have consumed a self-made fatal sized hairball by now. They play Nirvana without a hint of irony. They play Blondie without realizing that very few of us have a fond memory of coked out disco rock. 12 years ago, this station was pretty solid. Pretty much 94.7 FM saves me during my work days. Having to listen to the oldies station in the work showroom, country music in the accounting department office, sports and classic rock at the shipping room. I must admit that ordinarily I wouldn't even bother to review this station because it's just background noise for me at work. Why then do I give it 5 stars you ask? Because.... they let me hang out & make music (sweet, sweet music) with...drum roll please.... M-effin WEEZER. That's right kids, WEEZER. Coolest thing that I've ever done. EVER. Whilst I agree with my predecessors that this radio station is pretty predictable & just a tiny step up from similar stations in other towns, they more often than not have some rad stuff going on for their listeners. I took 94.7 for granted until I moved to the Bermuda Triangle of pop music radio stations (i.e. Central California coast). Now I stream it. And thank the Flying Spaghetti monster for that. Because you know what sucks more than hearing "it's different here" a gazillion times a day -- Taylor effing Swift, that's what. And that's the kind of excrement that plays on the radio stations my coworkers listen to. Deafness never sounded so good. Yes, Gustav seems to have a hard-on for Sublime (Dear Gustav: I love you but please knock off that shit). I don't mind the other early to mid 90's music because, well, I'm an early to mid 90's music kinda girl. I LIKE that they play Nirvana, Pearl Jam, etc. And, yes, it seems to be the same Silverspun, MGMT, Imagine Dragons, Fun, and those banjo-playing, Steinbeck-loving Mumford & Sons playlists -- but I will take that over the alternatives here. Portland Radio stations kind of struggle. 94.7 could be a great Portland Indie station, but they spend so much time playing crap like Nickelback from the early 90's. Ick. Its not the 90's anymore. Until a KEXP or a KUFO type of station pops on the scene, this is all we have. Some good strides have been made to integrate true alternative music, but you still end up hearing WAY TOO MUCH Red Hot Chili Peppers, U2 and Sublime. Enough of that!!! I did a perfect play list with Gustav about a year ago and had a lot of fun playing My Bloody Valentine, Stereolab, Velvet Underground, Yo La Tengo and Spiritualized. I even got a few folks calling in and saying how this was cool to hear on mainstream radio :) In summary, decent older bands get some play, but the cool new ones do not. I would LOVE to find a truly alternative channel in Portlandto listen to. But since I have yet to locate that, when I need to have the radio on this is my channel of choice. My major gripe: Apparently I'm the One Person on Earth who Loathes Nirvana and Sublime, because thousands of other people have voted them as their favorite musicians of all time (or something like that) and subsequently these 2 bands are played EVERY hour. And it's not like there's a huge library of options from either of these bands that are utilized. Nope- the same ole 3-5 songs. Every hour. Every day. Cringe. I'll contrast that with a positive, to be balanced: I really like the Perfect Playlist at 5pm. I like listening to people's choices of songs, because often they choose awesome random stuff that either I haven't heard before or haven't heard in ages. Keep that aspect coming! But I will agree with the other reviewers that in general it's about the same repeated playlist of repetitive music, dusted with interesting different songs (mostly retro). I would welcome more local music, more new music, more different music. But, all in all, 94.7 isn't horrific. I think the DJs are fine, -the playlist just needs a good scrub-down by some executive who truly is willing to embrace new/local/different music. read more

It's been 222 days since my last fix. I thought I could make it. I thought that maybe this time I could stay clean but who was I fooling. Not even myself. 200+ CD's of aural candy gleaned from years of KEXP 90.3 addiction & it's not even close. Cravings are becoming obsessions & we all know where those lead.... The hallucinations are setting in. I know my mind is playing tricks on me but truthfully I'm so far gone I don't even care anymore. If this is reality then sign me up for that custom-tailored white jacket with the extra long sleeves. Auditory pica is here to stay & my tenuous hold on the here & now is slipping. John in the morning is chirping in my head telling me about this great new band with the funny name of Vampire Weekend but that's crazy talk. He started playing them a year & a half ago. Cheryl Waters is chiming in about the podcast of the day, some Smashing Pumpkins-esque band, called the Silver Sun Pickups but my iPod shows quite clearly that was on May 2006. The worst though is yet to come. Can a voice sound like smoky jazz laced with laughter? Damn. There he is, Kevin Cole, in the phantom flesh, taunting me with French pop on the commute home except my commute is a pedestrian ramble home from the dog park...with Peter, Bjorn, and John whistling at me as I make my way down the street cuz Yoshimi's going to save me from those giant robots. No, the worst part isn't losing your mind or even the flights of fantasy. It's the crash back into reality, the knowledge that not only are you in fact spiraling into that unknown land but that you're straddling two worlds. If "It's Different Here" means that I'll be subjected to mind-numbing reiterations of bands that I listened to in GRADE SCHOOL then please, drop kick me into the abyss where I can indulge my need for iconoclastic musical apparitions & bypass the monotonous derivative drivel. I am surprised to see the negative reviews of this radio station. I like it, and think that it is one of the best in Oregon. They don't talk too much, and they play a lot of good progressive music, upbeat songs I don't hear on other Portland stations. Yes, they do play a collection of songs a lot, but they are really good songs. After a while they move on to emphasize a new collection of songs. The modern mix show on Saturday night is a great, different from anything else I have heard in Oregon. read more

Overall great station to listen too ... but only for a while, once in a while. Problem is they tend to replay "new" songs (many of which I think suck; e.g Fun, Matt & Kim) every few hours. Luckily, unless these become "popular" (measured how?) they seem to go away, but it's still a challenge to listen to this stuff for more than about three hours. I moved to Portland about a year and half ago and was shocked that a city with such a strong music scene could be such a barren wasteland as far as radio stations go. I barely listen to the radio anymore due to the extreme lack of options. However, when I do find myself listening to the airwaves it is almost always on KNRK. I have many of the same gripes as the other reviewers. The format is supposedly "alternative" but an alternative to what? They are playing the same exact same songs that I can hear on the classic rock station. Sure, people like Bowie, U2, the Talking Heads, etc, but really, some of those songs have been around 30-something years. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy my fair share of classic rock as well, but when I turn on the radio to the alternative station I expect to hear something new not just the same worn out staples. The DJs are fairly unobtrusive, which is fine with me. I'd take bland over loud and obnoxious any day. The station plays way way too many commercials, though. I know they have to advertise to stay in business, but seriously it seems like it is one song then commercials. DJ comes back on for a bit to read the weather and announce the next song before it cuts to commercials again. Cue up another song released in 1991 and then air some more commercials. You get the idea. I half-expect them to say, "Now for a quick music break and then back to more commercials." Maybe that's what the "alternative" is supposed to mean: not alternative music but an alternative to music in the form of nonstop advertisements. The reviewer who noted that this station plays Nirvana on the hour is spot on. I know this is the Pacific Northwest and all, but really, is the never-ending 24x7x365 Kurt Cobain tribute necessary? To echo other comments, if you want to highlight the PNW, then play some local bands. Since moving here I've asked every hipster I know how a town with such a vibrant local music scene could have such a lame radio scene. No one can answer that question. This town is saturated with hipsters so don't tell me there wouldn't be a market for it. C'mon somebody, let's get something going. Until that day comes, though, I'm going to stick to my iPod and depend on word-of-mouth and the internet to keep me in the loop of what's new. Bottom line: I wouldn't count on this frequency to be an outlet of fresh new tunes but it's good background noise if you are making a quick trip to the store. There isn't much you can do about a radio station playlist because its a corporate monster like Clear Channel hiring buffoons to list what's hot and what's not. Well, 94.7 tries to counterbalance this with classic alternative but in the end its just a hodgepodge of new iffy music and old played out music. As another reviewer on here pointed out, they play Sublime as if they just came out, Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins too. I listen daily at work because there really isn't anything better and listening to the gals in the office is NOT safe for 8 hours. ...hugs Betty Jean. Anyway, it would be such a great station if they would just concentrate on new music of a broad variety and focus on more local talent and other tracks from known artists than just recycling the same songs all day. In this modern age when most have access to online downloading, if a person hears a track and likes it they will most likely go download it and listen when they want. There is no need to replay a track 10 times a day. When Mumford and Sons were at the height of their popularity they would play a cut by them every 45 minutes....it was destroying my love for radio. So yes I am ranting and nothing will be done but if anyone from Clear Channel is reading this then please spice it up a bit and understand that most of us are not lemmings following your idea of what popular music is.....and yes alternative is popular music now unlike when I was a teen and it was good music to listen to in an attempt to escape Paula Abdul and hair bands.
