Thursday eve was one of favorite nites with Travelin the Tracks and The Captain. Tuned in tonight to high techno jazz, yeah--and like smooth hip-hop with DJ speaking so quietly, yeah-totally like. What the hell did you people do? And why? Man, that is what KBOO was for- the wild out there type stuff. This is by far the best radio station in pdx. Maybe I am bit biased but I have made some amazing musical discoveries from this station. Shout out to Derek Smith and The Morning Session, what a great way to start my day. I take kmhd with me wherever I go, home; work; traveling. Needless to say I am a huge proponent for this radio station and a lover of jazz. Tune in Portland listeners, 89.1 is where it's at. read more

I'm a longtime KMHD supporter and Jazz lover. My old analog tuner really doesn't need any preset buttons, because it's always tuned to KMHD. When they were still located at Mt. Hood Community College, they offered 30 and 60 minutes of fame in exchange for cash donations, and one year my wife donated a pair of Sonny Rollins tickets, and they gave her an hour of airtime; which she gave to me. I worked on my selection, cleaned my records, and at the appointed time, set off for the studio. KMHD's Friday morning voice, Isaac, was there to greet me, and set me up with some headphones and a mic. Isaac is a great guy, and he was really helpful and encouraging. I gave him my playlist, he got the turntables cued up, and after the break at the top of the hour, the red light in the studio flashed on, and he pointed to me - I was on the air. I spent and hour announcing and playing my favorite music. It was Friday, when they traditionally give a nod to the Blues, so I went with tradition and played T-bone Walker, Willie Dixon, Eddie 'Clean Head' Vinson, Helen Humes, Jimmy Witherspoon, Dina Washington, and other favorites. I had an absolute blast. They recorded the show and took pictures and presented them to me afterwards, along with a big KMHD mug which I still use. Things have changed and KMHD, and they are now partnered with OPB and have moved from Gresham to Portland. But the music is still great, and hopefully they will still offer people in the community the opportunity to experience the thrill of hosting their favorite music on air. read more

A great station for Jass. Most of time. Talking about revival drum all day and not mentioning sign up and 15 dollar fee is unexcusable? Why? WTF Is this what weird pdx is? I have been listening to this station since its inception. Love Derek Smith to get me going in the morning! Saturday is one of my favorite days!! Love the Brazilian Beat , HARD Choices is beyond awesome!!! Also Cloud Nine and Ken Calora!! Sunday with Debora and the afternoon with the music from the movies!(sorry cannot remember the gal's name who does this). Love the baby boomer on Friday's.!! We are devoted rhythm section members and encourage everyone to do the same! Worth every penny! So much variety . Such great people /DJ's ! It really shows how much they love what they do! I was a bit worried for this excellent Jazz station when OPB came to it's rescue. I was afraid their excellent and unusual jazz programing would suffer at the hand of public broadcasting. Not to worry, a few months into the new regime it still is the best place to tune your dial in Portland. read more

Being the only Jazz station in Portland is sad since this town does have plenty of local talent in this genre. Thankfully KMHD is a true Jazz station that covers many eras of Jazz--not just what they think their listeners should hear. This station is head and shoulders above the rest in my book...long live Jazz! read more

This station has the most eclectic mix of new groovy tunes and classic jams most of which you would never hear anywhere else. We first discovered KMHD on a Pacific Northwest road trip 2 or 3 decades ago. We listened to it in the car when we were in the Portland area and I've been a basic member intermittently just on general principles. I even have a set of KMHD wine charms I bought years ago from their website. When we were recently in Portland I found it on the car radio at 89.1 and gave it a preset button. It's 24 hour noncommercial jazz, although I think they do broadcast a 5 minute NPR news roundup at 5PM weekdays at least. They sound more polished and professional then they did when we first discovered them, not unlike the evolution of KCSM over time. The music they play is excellent, although there isn't the ongoing educational component we get on KCSM, w/ information on the players, the date of the recording, the label and anything else that might be interesting. The music stands on its own. It was our car radio companion on this trip and gave us much pleasure. read more

I love this Portland Jazz Radio station -- it's among the best on the West Coast! All the weekday DJs are great in their own ways. Unfortunately there is a lot of repetitive play of some tunes, but two DJs I listen to are very original with their choices of music: Jessica Rand and Lynn Darroke, to name two who play many genres and have great shows. I'm sure there are others at times when I don't tend to listen. Both are uber knowledgable about jazz music, its roots, performers, etc. and have deep repertoires. Also both are tuned into the community and have guest artists when there's an upcoming performance in town. I love that Jessica Rand showcases women artists, famous and not widely known, whenever she can! read more
