My son's been taking karate here since July 2007 and has done really well. I've been very impressed at how well they work with the kids. There is no pressure to move up the belt ranks quickly; every student moves at their own pace. There are plenty of instructors and teen helpers in each of the kids' classes to help all the students individually, and they are wonderfully patient with even the most hyper of kids. I highly recommend this karate studio for kids. Not sure about their adult instruction (I go to a different dojo for my own classes) but I love their enthusiasm. read more

I wish I could rate this place better but they need someone to manage it better, return calls and e-mails. Or perhaps they are only interested in kids joining to commit to three or more classes per week. I don't know but they really dropped the ball with us. After paying $50 for the introduction classes, getting the pants, but never the top (due to not in stock, whatever), we wanted to sign up. I never received a call back after two messages and once they didn't even answer. Very odd because they were actually the ones supposed to call me to see which program we wanted to sign up for. And I even emailed a week later with no response again! Anyways, I never even told my daughter those details and just had her try Tae Kwon Do which she has been learning for close to a year now. I just had to let this review be heard because I don't think it should happen again to anyone. We're all learning, hopefully they also better themselves after this review. Three stars because I don't like being mean and we would've liked to go there. It does seem like a good place to learn Kung Fu if it's managed and/or supervised better than by the early twenties girl which I will not name. Our 7 year old son started at KO Karate nearly one year ago. We had our initial lesson w/ Mrs. Curran. We immediately felt comfortable and reassured that our son was in good and knowledgeable hands. The staff are really kind and want to make sure that KO students really LEARN their techniques; students do not easily earn stripes or test for new ranks. The students have to work hard and truly understand and know their belt material before progressing. Students are able to learn at their pace, the studio is a great value as students can attend daily if they want. The teachers are all wonderful as are the Junior Instructors--Mrs. Curran, Mr. Curran, Mr. Ryan, Miss Schmidt and Mr. C each have a different, but effective approach to teaching their students. These instructors ensure that the students are taught with respect, dignity and care--no matter the age of the student. The instructors all have a passion for Bok Fu Do Kung Fu and it shows in how they teach. This all comes from Master Ozuna's love for his studio and this art. While busy, Master Ozuna makes himself available to chat and check in with KO families and is open to suggestions (e.g. adding classes on weekends to curb over-crowding) as they come up. This is a phenomenal Karate school, with phenomenal instructors. During this last year, my son has gained strength, balance, passion and confidence (areas he has struggled with). We attribute it to KO and its teaching methods. KO Karate also has birthday party packages. We had one for my son, and he had a fantastic time! I highly recommend it! I took sports kickboxing here for a few months and absolutely LOVED it. The staff is friendly, amazingly attentive and give you great direction. The classes are fun, energetic and kick your ass! The class schedules worked perfectly with my schedule and the membership fees were affordable. I have been taking private lessons at K.O. Karate for the past 4 months. Mr. David Curran is my teacher and he is easily one of the best teachers I have had in my life. He is a true master of his craft and knows exactly how to teach an individual based on their physical fitness and flexibility. My experience at K.O. has been nothing short of amazing. I decided to write this review mostly because I feel given that the people who run this school seems to be more focused on teaching their craft well rather than making tons of money we should make it a point to highlight such places in an era where everything seems to revolve around money and materialism. The staff at K.O. are truly great martial artists, you can see that immediately in the way they conduct themselves. Mrs. Curran (who is the mother of David) is another amazing individual, she has a ready smile for everyone and makes you feel very welcome and comfortable at the school. Master Ozuna is truly a master in every sense of that word, he holds two world records and yet he is extremely friendly, approachable and always has supportive advise whenever I run into him. I want to emphasize that given my crazy schedule at work the only reason I am still training here regularly and has made amazing progress (given how unfit I was when I started) is because of the truly inspirational support I get from Mr. David Curran, he continues to be a fantastic teacher and keeps me motivated and has given me the support and guidance needed to cross some of the barriers that were not within my skills or ability. In this short time, K.O. has become the one place I look forward to going most no matter what happened during that day, I know I will leave the school feeling better for my time there. One thing to note about this school is that, they will not give you a belt or let you take a belt test if you are not ready for it. I really had to work hard to be ready for belt or stripe testing, and the tests are very comprehensive. Even in basic stripe tests I had to perform the techniques as if I am being attacked not as if I was training, so you should be ready to EARN your belt, I feel great every time I succeed in such a test! read more

KO continues to amaze us with the warmth and knowledge of their teachers and student helpers. We recently held a birthday party for our son at KO. We had 43 kids at the party and KO responded with a staff of twelve! The staff provided the children with education on what to do in a "stranger danger" situation and then later put on a demonstration of the school's Bok Fu Do martial arts. I absolutely love KO and I am not easy to please! All the instructors are kind, yet highly disciplined; encouraging, yet pushing you to be your best. Mrs. Curran always has a genuine smile on her face and she and the rest of the wonderful staff seem more than happy to answer any question ( and trust me, I got a lot of them.) From what I have seen, they take an avid interest in each and every student, meeting them where they are and helping them achieve their own personal best. They work with some mentally and physically challenged students as well- and the focus, the respect and kindness are no different. To me, that speaks volumes of the dedication KO has to their students- no matter who they are or their limitations. Having had to leave one martial arts school due to some unethical behavior, I wanted to make sure I put my kids somewhere I could trust and KO has def. won my trust - so much so, I am also now taking classes. I also wanted to make sure I found a school that didn't pass out black belts like candy, but actually made you bust your rear and work for each and every achievement. In response to an earlier review: I am not sure if you did so or not, but did you ask what your son needed to improve upon in order to get his next advancement? As I said, the entire staff has always been willing to answer any questions I have. However, If we expect things to just be given to our children, we can never expect them to learn discipline or character. Having to work hard and even be disappointed in not getting what they want (when they want it,) will teach them how to overcome (and how to not let disappointment destroy them) Better to learn early how to deal with disappointments and failures in life, than grow up being overly-sheltered and then shell shocked by the real world. Better they learn to earn their success than become spoiled adults who feel entitled to whatever it is they want whenever it is they want it. Every parent should want their child to succeed. But every good parent wants that child to earn their success and also get the opportunity to learn and grow from their failures. I am happy that KO has made my kids work for their belts. Sure, they have been disappointed because it sometimes took longer than they wanted. But when they are passed to their next belt, they know they earned it - that they gave their personal best and that they deserved it. And the satisfaction they feel knowing they worked hard, learned whatever they needed to learn, persevered and overcame ( all on their own with no interference from Mama,) is a reward in itself. No matter how my work day has been, no matter what I have heard on the news, I am able to leave it all behind when I walk through the doors at K.O. Karate Kung-Fu. It has become a home away from home for my boys and me. I searched for a year for the "right" martial arts school for my oldest son after we left another school, unwilling to commit almost $4000 and 3 years for a seven year old. John Ozuna greeted us warmly within moments after walking in the front door and treated my wife and me with patience given our fears of making a mistake in our next choice of schools. Both of our sons started four years ago and it has been a great journey. We were especially impressed with the maturity and bearing of one young man, David Curran. He has been a great role model for the boys. I watched my sons classes for almost two years, unable to join them because of permanent damage to both ankles and dire warnings from my surgeon. This is a wonderful school, where both my son and daughter have been taking classes for the last two years. Beyond just their continuing advancement and how much they enjoy it, there are a couple of things that stand out for me. 1. Atmosphere. The atmosphere created by the people at KO, from John Ozuna down to the student teachers, is unflaggingly positive. They are teaching children and adults to deal with aggressive, dangerous situations, but I have never witnessed nor heard of any aggressive or intimidating behavior by any of the staff. This gets reflected in the clientele; there are some very, very capable martial artists here (men and women), but there aren't any meatheads. 2. Mingling. Classes often include students of many levels and ages. While instructors may peel off smaller groups to work on different techniques as appropriate, classes begin and end together and do a fair amount of training together. I feel like it's good for everybody, young and old, beginner to advanced, to spend time around those who are somewhere else on the spectrum. Lastly, I'm surprised to read Eric R.'s negative review, based apparently on a teenager making funny faces through a window. While that's certainly possible, to leap from that one extremely narrow experience to "this student's character represents their the school" is not just an unjustifiable generalization, but, as I and every other reviewer can attest, is patently untrue. Master Ozuna would have absolutely zero tolerance for any threatening, intimidate, rude or in any way disrespectful behavior from any of his staff or students to anyone. Please don't allow yourself to be swayed by his review of a school that he only interacted with by walking past a window. read more

When looking for a martial arts school, I wanted to enroll my family in an estabishment where you really earn your next stripe & next belt advancement (not just buy it.....). I can say with 100% certainty that all students at KO earn their rank. The instructors at KO are top notch! Not only are they very talented martial artists, but very nice individuals as well. I cannot say enough wonderful things about KO Kung Fu Karate. The instructors are warm and knowledgeable. They teach the important technical aspects, but also the equally important respectful aspects. KO's fee policy and lesson schedule make it SO EASY for me as a parent. I can take my girls on our schedule. No penalty for missed classes, and we can stop and start lessons at any time if we leave town. My girls love their teachers and their lessons! read more

Been going here for years, my son who has Aspergers has done very well in improving his coordination and balance and loves this place. We typically go 3 days a week, the schedule is pretty flexible. I have seen other schools and this one has a notch up on integrity. They don't gift away belts and the belt tests are hours long affairs even at the lower levels. They offer kickboxing classes and the staff are EXTREMELY nice. Students who have achieved higher belts become instructors and are very supportive of all the students. read more

I have been taking the cardio kick boxing class and I LOVE IT!

First, let me say that I have no experience YET with how these folks operate their karate studio when it comes to lessons. What I can say is that they are a GREAT place to have a kids birthday party. As parents, we've all hosted or been to events at places like Pump-it-up, The Jungle, Chuck E Cheeses, parks, etc. And, those are all great places to hold events. But, what if you're tired of those place or you really want to try something a bit different? This may be the place for you! My daughter has been talking about wanting to take karate lessons and we saw this place when we stopped at a nearby restaurant for dinner and thought we'd 'check it out.' We found out they host birthday parties here and thought we'd give a try. SCORE!!! The staff here started off with a lesson in 'stranger danger' and how the kids should respond. This is something we THOUGHT we'd covered fairly well with our daughter but... let's just say it's nice when the lessons are approached in a different manner, too. These days, one can never be too careful with our kids. The kids were engaged, asked questions, and got to practice how to handle themselves when it comes to 'stranger danger' all in a manner that was fun, totally in keeping with the party theme and in no way threatening to the kids. Kids got to hear other kids ask their questions, view the "wrong way" to handle a situation as with as the correct way, and it brought out questions of their own. I wouldn't have thought 'stranger danger' "belonged" in a party setting but this worked VERY well. The kids also received a few karate lessons, watched demonstrations, and played karate related games. The program ended with my daughter breaking a board for the class (she's had virtually no background -- just a few minutes of instruction from the staff). The whole program was awesome and, as I told the staff, MUCH better than I had hoped for. Our party was yesterday and today I heard from yet another parent who talked about how much fun her son had and about how "pumped up" and animated he was when he got home and told of his experiences. As the mom said, "It's always a good sign he had fun." I got the impression that otherwise, it's the usual "How was the party?" "Good..." end of conversation. When they talk about it on and on, you know they've enjoyed themselves. Anyway, if my daughter's serious about wanting to learn karate, this is the place we'll take her. If not, I can say in all honesty that it appeared the kids had a GREAT time, at least. read more

We love this place! We have lived here for almost 3 years & am upset with the fact that I waited so long to enroll my son. He has been going to classes for about 3 months. They offer classes 7 days a week, with very convenient hours. The teachers are amazing. They work so well with the children. The atmosphere is always so positive. My son is 6 years old and is somewhat shy. This review is for their birthday parties! My son had his fifth birthday here and it was a really easy, fun and affordable experience. He and his friends loved it, boys and girls alike and it was cute to watch. The staff was so sweet and kind to all the kids, and older students (elementary and junior high) were there the whole time to assist and demonstrate. It began with a quick stranger danger lesson and activity which was great. Then there was a lesson on how to do simple moves. They were all having a blast learning and practicing and then doing a fun obstacle course. All of the kids were engaged- whether they had seen Kung Fu Panda a hundred times or if they were wearing full princess outfits! Parents could relax and watch the cute proceedings. Or a few wanted to participate too! The kids sat still for the students' demonstration (my son thought those big kids were the coolest ever, especially when they brought out their staffs) and at the end my son even got to break a board. We came a half hour early for him to learn how. After that there was time for simple cupcakes and juice boxes and then it was done. I hardly had to bring anything and one of the awesome instructors and some ultra polite and helpful students even helped me load the car. We also met the owner and he was a real gentleman. This was great for our group of mostly four year olds because they could listen and follow instruction. The package is for 20 I think but we only had six kids and it was really great. It was well paced, not intimidating and they emphasized that it is only for self defense. Younger siblings did mostly stay home because there wouldn't have been anything for them to do. The party is an hour and a half which is just long enough to hold interest and not cross into little kid crankiness territory. Also very affordable at about half the cost of parties at all the other sort of kid places like pump it up, rockin jump, museums, billy beez, etc. plus I like supporting a local business. What a fabulous school. Master Ozuna and all of his staff are dedicated to helping students of all ages. Master Ozuna is totally dedicated to helping each and every one of his students. He always teaches his staff by example: "The measure of a great instructor is not their ability to teach the best students, it is their ability to teach the students who face the greatest challenge to learn. We will turn away no student who wants to learn. There is no student we can not teach." ...and... "a great teacher must constantly reinvent himself to help his students achieve what they want to achieve in marshal arts as well as in life. K.O. is simply the best! My daughter loves coming for Kung fu practice and would be here EVERY day if she could. The teachers are "super awesome"! The practice is serious enough for the kids to learn actual martial arts but the coaches make it fun enough for even the youngest kids to keep up and want to come back. There are no silly games like I have seen in some other places. Moving up is based on skill and kids work hard to earn their next belt stripe / belt. My daughter felt welcome from day one because the atmosphere here is so family like. I have seen the kids help each other as well. They occasionally have demonstrations from the teachers and advanced students which is a very strong motivation for the younger ones to work hard. I strongly recommend this place for your kids (or yourself) to learn some good martial arts skills in a fun and friendly environment. read more

Next month will mark my 9th year at KO karate, but when people ask me how long I've been there I simply respond, "my whole life." Ever since I was a baby, I would watch my older brother and sister take classes and beg my mom to let me join in. I would be practicing my own karate moves on the side pretending I was a part of class. Finally at age 5, I started taking lessons. I still remember my intro lessons and getting my white belt, with a red bow in my hair! Now at age 14, KO is still a part of my life. I've had some of my proudest moments at the school, and some of the most painful injuries there but I wouldn't change one bit of this experience for anything. I've grown up at KO; the instructors, especially Master Ozuna, have watched me grow up, mature, and find myself. I have met so many wonderful people in my life because of KO; my sister and I now have an even stronger bond because of our love for KO and martial arts. I could write numerous books on my experiences with KO. KO karate is a wonderful place to be at whether you want to work out, or find a second home. I would recommend this to anyone :) read more

It's a big statement to make, but I think that I can definitively say that walking into KO Kung Fu Karate at nine years old was the best thing that's ever happened to me. If you can open up your heart and embrace KO and all the people there, I promise that you will not come away without a huge positive affect on your life. Like me, you may never come away at all. I'm seventeen years old and KO has been a huge influence on my life so far. I've learned many hard lessons while I was here, I've done so many think I never thought I would do, and I've made so many friends that I know will be with me for the rest of my life, no matter what. If I had to pick one thing from my KO journey that's affected me the most (and it's very hard to pick just one) I think it's that I've learned not to ever limit myself. When I first arrived at KO, I almost immediately told myself that I would never make it past orange belt. Looking back, I have no idea what made me think that, but I remember being dead certain of it. So, of course I was very surprised to find myself an advanced orange belt after a couple years. My response to that was to tell myself that I would never get past a blue belt. Well, now I'm a green belt, and if all goes well I'll be testing for my 3rd degree brown belt in a few months. I can proudly say that I am no longer the girl who told herself what she could not do. I can get to whatever rank I want if I put my heart and body into it. I may make mistakes, I may get injured or suffer other setbacks, but I will never tell myself I can't do something. If I obtain one goal, I will immediately set a new one. I know no that I can always improve and become a better martial artist and person. KO is home to some of the best people on the planet. Master Ozuna, all the other instructors, and my fellow students have all taught me so much and been amazing role-models. I am so incredibly lucky to have found a home at KO, and I think a lot of people feel the same. I think that doing the program with my dad has helped me grow closer to him. Parents should never be afraid to jump in with their kids. ANYONE can start martial arts for the first time. I for one am NOT the same person I would be if KO had not been a part of my life. KO is a school that will cater to the individual, challenge you, embrace you, and hopefully help you grow in more ways than you could ever imagine. My daughter wanted to learn karate and I knew nothing! We got on Yelp and chose 3 studios close to our home and the 3rd one was the charm! KO is professional and loving at the same time. My daughter has been taking classes since December of 2011 and still loves it! She goes to class at least 3 days a week and I never have to push her to go. The staff is wonderful and I just can't say enough good thing. I started taking the Cardio Kick boxing classes in January and have lost 25 pounds! I'm in the best shape I've been since my 20's. They start students with three private lessons where they learn the traditions and the basics so when they start the group classes they fit right in. I am disappointing over this place especially Ms. Roz Curran. She was very friendly at beginning during trial. But, after we sign up, she was never even say hi or smile when passing by me, except if I wanted to pay (she takes care the money). At the beginning, I tried to ignore her odd behavior, since my son really like his class. After taking my son for several months (more than 4 months ), I noticed there was unfairness toward my son. It seems to me he will never get any additional stripe unless I paid for the next class ( I choose 3 months options). I felt sorry for him since he was so small but very diligent to come and learn in his class. I felt , if I continued, my poor little boy will be discouraged to see his other classmate already get lots of stripe long time ago. Well, my son probably is not the best, but for sure, he is not the worse. What I see, the belt raised base on business, not purely because the skill. If you are willing to pay for tournament, buy gloves or clothes, sign up for private lesson, or sign up for 1 years, then for sure your kid will easily get the next stripe or belt. ( I think the belt raised depends on Ms. Roz for smaller kids.) read more

My 8 year old son has been a student at KO and we could not be happier. As soon as you walk in, you are greeted by an friendly instructor and feel a sense of welcome. My son was very nervous in the beginning and the instructors were all so kind but also challenged him enough so that he was able to push himself. He has gained so much confidence in himself and his abilities. There is a feeling of respect and kindness from everyone. The instructors have the perfect balance of discipline and firm kindness. Each child is respected as an individual and given equal attention. Even with the large age range of students, there is mutual respect and the students also treat each other kindly and respectfully because that is what is expected of them at KO. Our son had his 7th birthday party at KO Karate this fall. A total of 12 KO staff/helpers facilitated the 40-kid party, led by Mrs. Curran. The staff was incredibly courteous, professional and helpful throughout the whole 1.5 hour event. The kids received a practical lesson on what to do in a 'stranger danger' situation (keeping out of reach, warning off the stranger, and calling out for help), received a short karate lesson and enjoyed a spectacular demonstration by the 12 person staff (complete with musical choreography). The staff facilitated with the piñata, cake cutting and clean-up afterwards. Everyone at KO went above and beyond to help make the party a success, and boy, did they succeed! I (as a hostess) actually relaxed and chatted with the parents as the kids were fully engaged in staff led activities. read more

My kids love to go to KO Karate. I use it as an incentive when they do homework to finish so we can go there. This is a very good school for learning martial arts. There is a very good ratio of teachers to students. They are patient and encouraging. Mrs. Curran is a great teacher. She teaches most of the new students. They offer a great introductory class that costs $19.95 and includes a free uniform (t-shirt, black pants, and white belt) and 3 half hour private lessons. The intro classes teach you the basic moves and etiquette for the studio, such as bowing before entering and not stepping on their beautiful floor mosaic, and the friendship gesture. Once your intro class is completed, there is no pressure to sign up, but most people do sign up for more lessons because they enjoy them. The school gets a steady stream of new students each week. This studio teaches bok fu do, a blend of karate and kung fu. That's why the uniforms look more like those used at kung fu schools, but the belt system is similar to karate or taekwondo. Regarding belt testing, this school definitely does not give them out just for showing up. They make sure the person really knows their techniques before advancing them, unlike other schools where they promise a black belt in 2-3 years. This is not the case at KO Karate. It will take years before reaching an advanced belt. So if your kid is not patient, he may get discouraged, but the kids who stick it out and work hard will really know their material. We are still relatively new to the school and though the decor is beautiful, it is not a huge studio so it can get crowded. The decor is beautifully decorated in Chinese theme. You must check out their bathrooms! This school is also accepting of special needs children, including those with ADHD and autism. They do their best to accomodate them and feel welcome. read more

We decided to check out K-O after reading the yelp reviews. I have to say I am incredibly impressed. The staff are all very friendly and helpful. They are absolutely wonderful with my 6 year old daughter. She loves going to her karate classes. They start you off with 3 private lessons which include the outfit. The outfit isnt the typical white karate outfit. It is black pants and a KO t-shirt. After the 3 private lessons they did a ceremony where she got her white belt. It was very cute and very special. Mrs. Curran was my daughters instructor for her private lessons and she is the best! I see her with the kids and she is so patient and kind, always smiling. Another thing I really like about KO is that you pay one monthly fee and you can attend as many classes as you want. My daughter begs me to go everyday! I was thinking it would get old at some point but she hasnt got sick of it yet. Shes been going for just over a month now and I dont see her enthusiasm waning. In fact, she seems more motivated than ever. I cant think of one negative thing to say. The space is beautiful and everyone there seems like a family. In fact, it seems like so much fun that I want to be a part of it. There are a lot of parent/child participants and so Im thinking I might try it out as well. There is also a discount for family members, so thats a plus. Im so grateful to have found such a family oriented place! I know my daughter will benefit greatly in so many ways by being a part of KO Kung-Fu Karate. read more
