Three other "professional" roofing groups evaluated and the suggestions ranged from tearing down the wall and rebuilding, using caulk along the roof line, and another was rerouting a gutter. All first said "oh yeah, it's just a gutter cleaning" until I showed them that gutters weren't clogged and working just fine. The caulk guy was the most convincing, so I gave it a try - no change whatsoever. I was frustrated and losing hope. Moving on, I looked through Yelp for other roofers. I found one - Doyle, that for some reason stood out. I sent them a message and quickly received back a professional reply, asking when they could come out to evaluate. After some quick texts we set up a date. Afterwards I thought I should get more than one quote, so I used the Yelp "call for help" that sends out the request to (it seems) everyone in the world. [I will never use the Yelp random call for help thing again. I was text and phone bombed for three weeks after that. Not an exaggeration. Calls came in from all over the country - Texas, New York, Florida, Tennessee and more. I kept blocking numbers until it stopped - what a miserable experience! Even when I posted a public complaint one company just accelerated the calls and texts.] This is the first area Doyle stood out - that one initial contact via text (my preference) and some back and forth setting up the appointment. All done quickly and without being harassed. The polite professionalism and quick response put me right at ease. The owner, Sean, came onsite (on time and with text updates) and brought Tom, who did the evaluation. Tom was great - he explained in great detail the potential causes for the leak could be and pointed to an area where two sides came together. He said that a problem there was the most likely cause. He went up and looked around asked if I wanted to come up and see firsthand. I did and was blown away. He pointed to an area that clearly was suspect. The others had talked about everything but this area as the issue. Sean and Tom explained how they operate and what to expect (in clear detail). I had a few other requests unrelated to the leak and it was a quick "no problem, we can do that" and gave me a very reasonable price/estimate for it all on the spot. We arranged a convenient date. Sean send a contract electronically and I was able to sign remotely. Tom and another co-worker came on the date and time agreed on (a Sunday) actually a bit earlier than expected and immediately set up. Everything we agreed to was done. Tom kept me updated as to progress. Sean forwarded pictures on of the work that was completed - especially nice since some of the areas are impossible to see without climbing up to steep areas of the roof. Before they left Tom and his co-worker cleaned up everything - there was no mess or follow up I needed to do. All done with no surprises, no extra charges, and no BS. Several severe rainstorms later, not a leak, drip, or drop of water coming in. This truly was one of the best contractor experiences I've had. I only wish they did other home construction work!

Here are a few moments we did not like. - The quote was 40% higher than every (6) other quote we got. Yes, I'm the bozo who believed they would do a better job on the roof, communication and cleanup. - They were unwilling to provide/send the presentation to us so that we could re-review it (should have been the first red flag). - The dumpster was left in our driveway for 3 more days than we were told. Who doesn't love a dumpster of trash blocking their driveway over the weekend. They did put wood blocks under the dumpster to protect the driveway which we did ask about and appreciate. - The cleanup was horrendous. We notified the company at least three times that there were nails still left scattered all over the yard. To their credit, they did come back out to clean but what a half butt job to the point we had to incur the cost of buying our own magnetic lawn sweeper. Subsequent cleanups included paper, plastic, nails (on the ground and on the roof), cigarette butts and broken shingles from the old roof. Nails were both old nails and new nails. - During the presentation we specifically asked if they used sub-contractors. They said they did not and if you go with them then you will find out what's accurate. If you are picky, hope this helps, make your own decision based off of your own experience. I described my issue and he went to my home and diagnosed the problem using a drone. He called and texted pictures and stated that he could perform the needed repairs on the following day insuring that the forecasted storms would not make matters worse. I've never experienced such great customer service . By early Saturday afternoon the repairs were complete and I had pictures and an invoice in my hands.

That seemed like a lot of money for a day's work, but I said 'So be it' to myself. He added that the price might be higher if he had to buy new wood and metal to do the job well. He then said that he would be 'hands-on' but, as soon as he dropped off his workers, he left the job and didn't come back. When he returned days later, he told me that I owed him another $2,200. When I balked at this, he got testy and, so, lowered the additional charge to $1,700 ('because I want to work for you again,' he said). I challenged him to itemize the extra costs. He said that the additional wood was $300 and the additional metal was $500. I asked what accounted for the other $900 that he was demanding. 'Additional labor costs,' was his answer. I pointed out that his initial price had to have included the laborers' pay for the day - and they finished the job before 5 pm. Tom started sulking; then he became irate: 'Just give me the $5,000 - forget the rest.' It was a good ploy. I felt sorry for him, so I wrote a check for $6,000 - not the $7,200 that he wanted nor the $6,700 that he then proffered as a compromise. A qualified professional, who knows my house, said that $5,000 for new gutters and general maintenance of the system was a very high but not completely unreasonable charge for the work. But Tom's demand for an additional $2,200, then $1,700, was, this professional said, outrageous: 'He saw that you willingly paid the $5,000, so he figured that he could extract another couple of thousand from you.' I liked Tom personally but regret paying him what I did. I urge, then, whomever might hire him to be strong in negotiating about the job - and not to give in to his emotional ploys to price gouge.

Top it off, the house looks fabulous! Overall Tom is very conscientious and his team were top notch tradesman.
