The other week, I bought a red Lumix (Panasonic), and it seems to be in top condition. More than the quality of their cameras, it's the friendliness of the staff that impresses me. They are quite frank and upfront, and almost apologetic about their sometimes ridiculous prices. For instance, I had wanted to get my previous camera fixed, and was told apologetically that it would cost me up to $250, and that it would probably be cheaper to buy a new camera altogether. Which I promptly did!

One assistant tried to sell me the cheapest unit even when I insisted that I wanted a sturdy carbon fibre tripod & ballhead. She wanted to help, but didn't ask about my needs and budget, or know much about the products they sell. The store 'expert' stood aloof and only gave monosyllabic answers when the lady chased him down to relay my questions. Perhaps they made a lot of assumptions about me - I don't know - but if they had only bothered to speak to me and helped me they would have soon figured out that was ready spend $6-700 and very likely to have come back as a loyal customer. The Paxtons nearby was more helpful, knew my gear and their products, but didn't have the range to show me. I'm off to the web to buy.

It was also a nice walk down memory lane to visit. Kmart was part of my youth growing up, having a store within walking distance during my pre-driving days. Unfortunately, they were on a slow than faster decline, culminating in their closing their last mainland US store in 2024. But here in Australia, they continue to be a large presence, with 214 total stores, 52 in New South Wales. I was curious about the history of Kmart in Australia: -- first one opened in 1969, as a joint venture between Kmart US and Coles Meyer Australia, with Kmart US owning 51% -- in 1978, Kmart US traded its share in Kmart-Australia for a 20% share of Coles. -- in 1994, Kmart US solds all of its shares, making a Kmart-Australia a completely separate entity. I did buy something here: been looking for Pokemon trading cards for my daughter, and found a collector set here with many expander decks for retail price. Pokemon cards seem to be popular again, and haven't been able to find any without significant markup. Checkout was self, but I needed a lot of help since the item was security secured. They also scan your receipt for any purchased items as you leave the store. Wouldn't say the workers would add to the stereotype of Aussies being so friendly. Didn't see any 'blue light specials' when I was there. Later learned that they had them very early in their existence in Australia, but they went away once it broke away from the US mothership.

I've been to many Officeworks stores around Sydney and unfortunately have found many of the customer service staff working on the floor here being quite unhelpful, unprofessional and ignorant. They hardly come to customers even though they're doing nothing. Even if a staff is busy with something other than serving a customer, they must approach to the new customer immediately to assist by leaving all other things aside. I often struggled to get hold of someone even though the store hardly had any customers at that time. Some of them were even quite rude as they were asked for assistance.
