Nice linens on the beds and so very, very quiet. A romantic touch is the outdoor bathtub with hot running water, soak under the stars if you like. I'm happy to report it's nothing like that bad inside - it's clean, the rooms are biggish, and all have a kick-ass harbour view. The prices are also pretty competitive, particularly given the waterfront location. Just don't expect anything particularly particularly cutting edge - the decor is non-existent, the king-size bed is two singles etc. But for ultimate centrality for a relatively cheap price, this hotel is hard to go past.

Unfortunately you also have to gaze at the monster Starmart (or Fix 24 or whatever they've rebranded them as) on the waterfront but ah well. It's easy to just stare out the window and watch the workings of the harbour; it's slightly hypnotic. The rooms here aren't anything to write home about, but they're clean, and a decent size, and usually keenly priced. There's nothing else very exciting about the place but the views are good. It's fine for both business and holiday accommodation, and of course it's a good location if you want to walk lots of places.

What a gorgeous accommodation on the island with a magic view, darling bedroom suites and an amazing central dining room and lounge. The French connection comes in handy when Gene is planning his dishes, the meals at Te Whau are divine and a degustation celebration among fellow guests is a highlight. The lodge is very architectural, very stylish and there is lots of beautiful NZ art on display. I love the ensuites and showers incorporating corrugated iron, very clever.

And the breakfasts are wonderful with a combination of Asian and classic western cuisine. We also love the patio area out side and it's really so luxurious. The workout facilities are great and the pool is nicely tucked in on the 2nd floor.

She will definitely take care of you though and this place lives up to your expectations. They do weddings here, imagine a stunning day out on their lawn with the black sand ocean beach as your photograph backdrop. As regards the location, it suited us fine as we live nearby and the wedding was in a hotel in the Waitakeres. I guess if you wanted to explore Auckland, it may not be your best bet as it's a bit outside the city - if you want to explore the more central neighbourhoods you're going to have to travel to and fro on the North Western motorway. The hotel itself was fine, there was no complaints. The vibe was a little sterile but that's often what you get with hotel chains. Some nights we were busy with wedding planning so our entourage had to ask the staff for directions etc and they said they were very helpful. A well run hotel but perhaps not in the most central location.

I chose to stay at Dawn Haven Bed & Breakfast after a recommendation was made by my friends. It was a delight staying in this bed and breakfast - the house itself is large and airy with plenty of light and a great view of Auckland City across the water. There are great walking tracks that run along the waters edge as well as various other activities you can take part in duing your stay. The accomodation itself is on the lower floor and there are two separate areas for guests to stay. If you happen to be there by yourself you have the whole lower floor to yourself but if there are guests in the other room you share kitchen and lounge facilities. The room I stayed in was situated near the pool area and you walk straight out of your room onto decking and a beautiful view. The room has its own ensuite bathroom and fresh towels were supplied on a daily basis. The hosts Helen and Barbara were most welcoming and enquired with you the night before as to what time time you wanted breakfast and what you wished to eat. They really make you feel like home and at the end of my stay I was sad to leave, but pretty sure I will return when I make it back to Auckland. Having never stayed in a Bed & Breakfast before this was a great introduction for me for this sort of holiday accomodation. My only regret was not being able to get int the pool as it was still a little cold when I was there. Free WI-FI is avaliable to guests as well as tea and coffee and breakfast is provided as part of your stay.

I booked a room in the bungalows in the back (not attached to the main house) and really enjoyed the quiet. The only downside was sharing the kitchen with some college kids who didn't always clean after themselves. Plenty of space, beautiful landscaping, free wifi, coin-op laundry. The main building is absolutely gorgeous. I'd stay there again for sure.
