I've had the pleasure of chatting to the owners, Anthony and Marlene, who are really lovely and do make it a point to take good care of their guests. I also had a chance to walk through and can report their bedroom suites are just gorgeous. The three bedrooms are plushly decorated in keeping with the heritage character of this period villa. They all have very modern ensuites which I think are nicer than a lot of hotels. In fact, don't bother about an impersonal hotel, book in with these guys for a real Mt Eden experience and for some genuine hospitality.

It has a great history and ambience, and served a decent cheese platter for our group to share. The hotel has 25 unique rooms, and its indoor atrium used to be an outdoor alleyway, It was really mesmerizing to see how the architects chose to incorporate the old, while bringing in necessary modernities. I thought the cheese plate (including some NZ cheeses, nuts, and fruits) was OK. New Zealand is proud of their cheeses. What really made the trip was this room/atrium...definitely worth a place to stop in for a social drink.

The congee was extremely boring. No minced Chinese preserved mustard greens and pork sung that the Chinese eat congee with. What looks like soy sauce didn't add flavor or salt to the congee. Some people thought the scrambled eggs were too runny, but I like it like custard This was so runny you have to drain the liquid out of the spoon before putting in your plate. The breakfast selection was not large, but gets the job done. The Wi-Fi was so slow. But on the day I checked out and had to wait in the lobby till 2 pm to board the ship, I told the front desk how slow THE CUT wifi was, that my email would not send. She put my phone on a different wifi and the email sent right away and wifi was no longer a problem. Location is two blocks from shopping and eating places, but mostly takeout food , pub stuff, I did not see really nice sit down restaurants.

Folow up with corporate office resulted in an offer for a discount for a future stay. Are they kidding?

It was functional and well-appointed. Excellent wifi. My only complaint was theroom was very hot when I got in there and w/no A/C it took a while to cool down w/the open window and included fan. The shared bath was right next to my room and was very clean and roomy and had nice provisions, including a hair dryer. There was an included continental breakfast, nothing fancy, toast & coffee and cereal, so it was adequate. Check out was a breeze. For the price point, a nice place to stay in Auckland, especially since it was pretty on/off the highway to downtown.

Sometimes I feel like growing up in central Auckland was a bit like growing up in a bubble. I never…read morereally had any reason to explore out west or the north shore, and so it's only been in the last few years that I have discovered places like the West Harbour Marina. I honestly didn't know it was possible to catch a ferry from West Harbour to Auckland CBD. Not only is it indeed a regular occurrence, it is actually the preferred mode of travel for many West Harbour locals as getting in to town during rush hour traffic on the motorway can take an hour or so. Though the trip in to town must be quite picturesque on a nice day, it is pretty pricey. At $12 for an adult one way trip, it's definitely more expensive than it'd be to drive - but I guess not having to pay for parking or sit in traffic makes it worth it! As well as hosting this ferry service, the view of the West Harbour Marina is actually pretty nice. Lots of boats are moored there, and with the Auckland skyline and the Harbour Bridge in the background, the Marina is a nice place to sit in the afternoon and have some quiet time.
