Very cozy local place whose pancakes rival their larger competitors. The service on a Saturday morning was great, the ambiance inside is quaint, and there's an interesting wall full of international currency. We got a plain Dutch pancake and they give you powdered sugar and syrup to go with it. We also ordered a side of fried eggs, and a side of bacon (which is really more like ham sliced very thin) and both were delicious. Lovely cozy breakfast spot along the canal in Amsterdam, only two blocks from the Anne Frank Museum. They have the typical breakfast options -- eggs, toast, some sandwiches, pancakes, etc. Inside seating is cozy, not too many seats, but a decent amount. You can also order takeout. The coffee was strong and tasty, and made to order. For food, I got the omelette mexicano which was very tasty and I really enjoyed it. I was torn between this one and the one with goat cheese as they both sounded so good. The omelette came with a small salad and two slices of toast. We came here TWICE during our 4 day amsterdam stay! First, because we really needed COFFEE to get us through our day, and this was the closest we found to the Anne Frank Museum! it seems like they don't always do take out.. because when we asked for our coffees to go, they seemed a little hesitant and said it's not a regular thing they do. Coffee was nice and strong! Not watered down at all which I appreciated. While we were waiting for our drinks, we smelled and saw a delicious breakfast sandwich. Which is why we came back a few days later for a sit down breakfast!! However the sandwiches we got were a little lackluster :( the bread wasnt all buttered and toasted.. so maybe we just got the wrong thing?? It's a very cozy and cute cafe though! This little gem is right by my hotel seems very popular with the locals. Fast friendly service. I had the bacon apple pancake. It is the size of a place mat. It's more like a crepe, in the best way possible. I had a side of perfectly fried eggs and a latte. It was about 1pm but you can get breakfast anytime. The sandwiches looked good also. This is the perfect cozy brunch spot!! They have a great deal where it's the complete breakfast for 11 euros, coffee, orange juice (freshly squeezed right in front of you), and a huge egg and ham breakfast. My bf ordered the complete breakfast and I ordered the Mexicano omelette, the omelette was really good, a tad greasy, but the portions are huge and a great price. They also had a big Dutch apple pie which we didn't try but looked great. When we came in around 1pm they were able to seat us immediately but we had gotten lucky and right after there was a wait. Amsterdam is confusing. When I want coffee, I can't go to a coffee shop or a cafe, or I'll get something entirely different and not quite suitable for early mornings. Instead you'll have to find a koffiehuis to get your fix (caffeine, get your mind out of the gutter) and Koffiehuis De Hoek is a good place to start. It's located right along the canals, so perfect for people watching or a quick break after touristing all day. We stopped in on a cold and rainy fall day, and found it perfect to warm up and grab a quick bite to eat. Their coffee was really good, but what you should be ordering is the pea soup. It comes in a cute little crock with a open-faced toast of rye bread, butter, and cured meat. I love love love pea soup, and theirs is really hearty and excellent. It's a good portion for a snack or light meal (and the butter on my bread was probably the best I had in Amsterdam. NBD). Our service was very friendly, but it took a very long time to get the check and pay- don't be afraid to go down to the counter and pay there. read more

The best meal we had in Amsterdam! We wanted something authentic and felt this was it. We (and others) waited outside before they opened at 8am. The cafe is at the corner and small. We got coffee with steamed milk and it was best coffee for our American tastes the whole trip! They were served in small mugs and my mom and aunt asked for seconds. Let me spend my 2200th review on an absolutely fantastic pancake in Amsterdam! My mother and I are staying nearby, and were in desperate need of coffee and a wholesome meal after a few days of airport/train station travel. Nearby feature on Yelp pops up (TIME FOR PANCAKES!) -- glowing, syrup-drenched reviews back up Koffiehuis De Hoek and soon we were sitting at our gray and white checked table next to the window, equipped with fresh squeezed OJ, white coffees and menus to order from. I must also comment -- the staff was lovely. From the older gent behind the counter, to the two servers, everyone was extremely pleasant, helpful and the food and drinks swift. Decisions made: A farmers omelette for my mom (comes with buttered toast) and the ABR special pancake for me! I made the better choice, in my humble opinion. A beautiful pancake with baked apples, golden raisins and BACON. Top with syrup and powdered sugar -- a true delight. I like the translation on the menu. The (*) means a speciality, and is translated to "local heroes!" I took a couple of guests here for breakfast. We sat outside on the Reestraat side in the shade. It was pleasant. There's lots of foot traffic. Nearer the canal the tables are all in the sun with one or two in the shade. The tables next to the wall facing the canal are all in the sun. It took a few minutes for a waitress to offer us menus. There's plenty on the menu to choose from. We decided on the pancakes. Each of us ordered a different kind. It didn't take long for our order to arrive. We enjoyed our meals and shared to taste the different ones. The service wasn't all that bad. We had to go inside to pay the bill. They were low on change so we couldn't pay separately. I was in the mood for a really good breakfast and as it was my first time in Amsterdam since I was a kid, so I went on Yelp for guidance on where to go. Found this place had good ratings and recommendations so I went for it - and it was fine, I had the bacon omelet and coffee. Nice atmosphere inside, very old fashion in a good and cozy way. My food was there in a split - nothing to complain about and the staff was very friendly. Personally, I wasn't all over heels, the reviews had set my expectations a bit to high. It was a regular well tasting tasting omelet - but nothing out of the ordinary. I had also hoped they had a little more to choose from except from fried eggs and omelet for breakfast -- some side dishes. But I would definitely recommend others to go here still, because it is a nice place and they also serve lunch, where there was a more broad selection. read more

Good coffee and food but no wifi. The American coffee is, out of a half dozen American coffees tasted in Holland so far, the best for being strong and dark. The atmosphere is cool. Reminded me of my favorite hangout in Brooklyn, NY, but with a European feel. The customers were mixed with locals and travelers, young and elderly. The staff was responsive and quick. No time wasted when ordering breakfast, which is served all day (great for weary travelers staying at the Pulitzer a few doors down). Only drawback was lack of wifi. Couldn't check in. Oh well. After perusing the menu, we decided to split an order of the apple pancakes, which were decent, but nothing to write home about. A Dutch colleague of mine (who wears wooden shoes and eats loads of cheese) overruled our usual lunch habits and urged us to check this place out. "It's very Dutch," he assured us, which only made me look down at his shoes and wonder how he avoided getting splinters. Anyway, we went there and had croquettes and it was great. Very tasty, very hot. I ordered a hamburger, which was tasty, but it looked a little weird. "That's the Dutchiest hamburger I've ever seen," said a colleague who had joined us. I didn't know what that meant, but it was genuinely tasty. Service is awesome, the place is very cozy and has a nice view of the Prinsengracht. They have smoothies. Why don't more places have smoothies? More places should have smoothies. Just be warned the the kitchen closes early on the weekend, or at least Saturday. As a local now, I have to say I feel sorry for all the tourists who have settled and think this is an amazing place for food. What it does have--a great location on the corner near a canal. On a nice day, it's always lovely to sit outside. However, the food and service are certainly nothing to write home about. We had a Mexican omelette that was pretty much tasteless. What made it "Mexican" was just a side of store-bought salsa and sour cream. I also tried the French toast, which was just two bland pieces of regular bread and felt more like a side. The yogurt and berries was just cheap processed yogurt with two sliced strawberries. My friend ordered a burger that was just a store-bought frozen patty that was so processed it didn't even look like meat; it was completely smooth like plastic and it came on white toast bread. They call themselves a Koffiehuis and I thought well at least that must be ok, but the coffee was just awful. Finally, they wouldn't let us split the check and were rude about it. The meal wasn't at all what I was expecting given the high rating. I was so confused I had to do a double-take to see if this was the right place. I'm starting to think people who've rated this might just be high tourists. Did someone say they come back every time they go to Amsterdam?! That's just insane and sad!
