We did a kayak excursion with Kona Boys and from start to finish it was an outstanding experience!!! When we checked in, we were greeted by two friendly staff members and as a bonus, Zena the doggo and Lover Boy the cat, which immediately set a relaxed, welcoming tone. Everything was clearly explained, including what to expect and who our guide would be and we were given easy directions to meet our guide at Kealakekua Bay. There we met Steve, who went over everything again and took exceptional care of us from the very beginning. He made sure we were comfortable getting into our kayaks and led us safely across the bay to the Captain Cook Monument. Safety was always his top priority, especially since the water was fairly bouncy the day we went out. At the same time, he shared fascinating historical information about the area, including Native Hawaiian history and the significance of the bay. Once we reached land, Steve explained exactly what would happen next and again made sure everyone was well taken care of getting out of the kayaks. I jumped right into the water and snorkeled for about an hour and a half, while Steve stayed back with my daughter, who isn't as much of a water baby as I am. If you've ever been to this spot, you know it's absolutely incredible. I've hiked down to the monument before but this was my first time kayaking in and I can honestly say this is the way to do it. Bring your snorkel gear if hiking. The water clarity is pristine and you'll see an amazing variety of fish, urchins, sea creatures and even dolphins if you're lucky. I personally saw a beautiful Abbott moray eel and my first crown of thorns starfish. After snorkeling, Steve provided us with lunch and shared even more history about Captain Cook and what happened there. When it was time to head back, safety was once again front and center as he helped us get back into our kayaks, guided us across the bay, and assisted us exiting at the end. Five stars all the way around. From the booking experience to the final exit from the kayaks, everything was handled with care, professionalism and genuine Mauna. I would absolutely do this excursion again and highly recommend Kona Boys to anyone visiting the area.

    Outrigger excursion

Amazing time on the outrigger canoe excursion. Dolphins came right up to the canoe! Chase is a fantastic guide.

Our guide Tommy was awesome!! We had a great time and learned so much history of the island!

    The Wa'a outrigger canoe

The Kona Boys (and gals!) created an amazing wa'a experience for us - thoughtful, easy, impactful. We've lived here 7 years, and still we learned a lot from Kiahe, our guide, about the waters, the history, and the traditional Hawaiian culture of paddling. It was very special to have this opportunity to learn about this beautiful culture and land, and we have made a memory that will stay with us forever.

Morning Magic kayak tour in January.

We did the Wa'a Hawaiian Outrigger canoe tour on one day and the Morning Magic kayak and snorkel tour another day. Both tours were amazing and provided so much Hawaiian heritage and culture. Our wa'a tour was with Keahi and he was a fabulous guide - providing so much Hawaiian information. We saw spinner dolphins and learned a lot. Our morning magic kayak tour was with Steve and Michael and they were amazing guides. I was somewhat unsure of my ability to get in and out of the kayak and they were super helpful and made me feel very safe and supported. The kayak trip was a fairly easy paddle across the bay (even for this inexperienced kayaker) and the snorkeling was spectacular. The lunch provided was great and I would highly recommend Kona Boys tours. All staff were incredibly helpful.

I am currently in Kona for 3 days. What are your prices for kayaking with snorkeling?

It's about $100/person for roughly a 3-4 hour trip - prices could change due to peak season.

Good afternoon! Do you offer clear kayaks?

Aloha and mahalo for reaching out. We do not offer clear kayaks at this time. We do have sit on top kayaks, mostly from Ocean Kayaks.

Definitely inspect your board before heading out and if you get a bad board, simply head in and swap it out. They will be very cool about it and likely give you more time in the water for the inconvenience. THE STAFF Very, very friendly and welcoming. No issues here. THE BOARDS Beware: some of the soft-top boards may be waterlogged. Pick them up - if they're unusually heavy, they're likely full of water and will surf terribly. I raised this with the leadership team, and Ben said they're going to do a better job inspecting the rental quiver to ensure boards are ready to ride. When in doubt, opt for a solid 8-9' hard top. BOOTIES You may think you want them to get out past the ~10 feet of rocky bottom. Not the end of the world - smooth rocks and ZERO sea urchins. They'll tell you they're everywhere, but you're only touching bottom for a couple seconds as you enter the crystal-clear water. Bring your own or rent for $5. If I had to do it again, I'd skip the booties. THE WAVES Scout the waves first. This is not Waikiki. This spot is hit or miss. THE CROWD Perpetual surf school sitting in the best spot in the lineup. No issues with them personally, but it does make the area feel crowded. OVERALL You're surfing in Hawaii - it's always a good outing. This is the best rental option for this beach. The staff is great and the prices are fair. Just double-check the surf and your rental board before paddling out, and don't hesitate to return to the shop during your rental to swap boards. They're happy to help, and if you lose time due to a bad board, ask for extra time - their team will likely make it right.

This protected bay has over 120 species of resident fish, and usually has clear water. Other than urchins (7 species) there is no marine life to worry about. Turtle sitings are more likely at high tide when their salad bar (the algae on the rocks) is available. Typically from 9 to 3 daily the Reef Teach volunteers have photo guide books and other reference materials available, along with free advice, defog spray, and reef-safe sunscreen. Water access is the narrow and shallow rocky channel in front of the lifeguard station by the parking and pavilion. Swim fins or sand shoes are recommended. The locals value their feet and swim through it even at low tide when it is only a foot deep. Coming back in you can actually swim all the way back to the sandy channel. The water is usually noticeably warmer and clearer away from the entry. The bay is shallow with only a few places that are even 8' deep at high tide. Unless you really need to, don't stand on the bottom or coral - fins and feet damage it.

But surfing in the beauty of Hawaii is an experience of a lifetime and one I wanted to share with my kids/family. My son was up for the adventure. We met our instructor, Daniel, at the surf van that is parked on the road, near the guardrail, just south of the little blue church. He informed us that it was high tide, and there wouldn't be many waves and offered to rebook us for another time. It was our last day of our trip, and we would not be able to make it for another day. After much thought, my husband convinced us just to go out and make the best of it. I'm so glad we did. We got out into the water, paddled out. During the our time in the water, I got roughed l up a bit by a set that rolled one on top of another, but Daniel was there keeping a watchful eye, was awesome to help paddle tow me over a bit further away from that area. Daniel was able to pick out what few waves came by and get us set up to catch them. He is so easy going and encouraging. He continued to give us tips for board positioning. We were able to catch a handful of waves between myself and my son. Standing up and riding a wave was pure magic - and the highlight of my trip. I wish I would have taken photos of it all, but I was too busy enjoying living the moment in real life. And my son and I were able to even catch the same wave together - that was the best! Thank you to Kona Town Surf Adventures and to Daniel for sharing the surf of Hawai'i. And when Daniel comes to Arizona to follow his dreams at UTI, we'd be happy to be his desert ohana.

I've taken surf lessons in other cities and these were awesome because they cut right to the chase. Definitely more time spent in the water, which was appreciated. Their instructions they emailed ahead of time were spot on. Couldn't say more great things about our experience. All four kids ended up getting up on a board plenty of times, despite less than ideal Hawai'i conditions (gray, rainy, etc). They could have gone for another two hours!

It took us about 30 mins each way to get there and back. Five stars with the caveat that no one was there when we arrived at 9:00 am (the time we booked online). After about 10 minutes or so, the employee appeared (didn't get his name, unfortunately). As other reviewers note, this place is just a table at the end of a road with a bunch of kayaks and a guy who will rent them to you. Don't expect storage for your belongings or bathrooms. Parking is along the street. All that being said, they give you this info in advance, so you should be prepared. We had our own snorkel gear (or did before I lost mine in the ocean later that day ha ha) so we only needed the kayak and dry bag. A dry bag is necessary (see "lost my gear in the ocean"). The employee gives you all the info you need to find your way to the snorkeling area and back. He said they "lose" about one party a day who overshoots the entrance to the cove when returning and they have to go rescue them. Don't be that person! Once at the snorkeling spot near the monument, you'll see lots of other people and boats, but once you're underwater, you won't notice them - it's like swimming in an aquarium. You need to keep your kayak with you at all times, so if you're paddling with someone else, consider taking turns holding the kayaks and snorkeling. You aren't allowed to dock or approach the shore (this is a hard rule - surly tour guides will yell at you if you get too close). Keep in mind that getting in and out of a kayak in the open ocean is not the same as doing that on the shore or in shallow water. There's no shallow water here at all, so practice in advance or consider taking a tour boat if that's not something you're comfortable with.
