Safety first and learning about these beautiful creatures Manta Rays
    Pauline M.

Thank you Captain Chris and crew for a memorable time in Kona. My boys truly enjoyed the Manta Ray Night snorkel. They saw many of these glorious creatures doing circle 8's , dining on Plankton. The crew was top notch and made sure all on board were comfortable and safe and accounted for. Also I noticed Fair winds was in the water a little longer than other outfits. The vegetarian soup and hot cocoa was delicious afterwards . Mahalo !

Super Fun Snorkel Trip with Fair Wind! Had an awesome time snorkeling with Fair Wind in Kona! The crew was super friendly and made everything easy from the start. The boat was really comfortable, and the slide and jump deck were such a fun bonus. We went to Kealakekua Bay, and the water was so clear tons of colorful fish and coral, and we even saw an octopus. The gear was solid, and clean. Definitely one of the best parts of our trip to the Big Island. Would totally recommend it to anyone looking to get in the water and see some amazing marine life!

Superb snorkeling experience! Our family of four went today, and the staff - Captain Dante, Emma, and others from all over Hawai'i and the mainland - made sure we were safe and had a gala time. Pick up was at 8:30 am at Keauhou Harbor. We arrived about 15 minutes before and found some street parking. We then checked in, slathered on reef-safe sunscreen, got our snorkeling masks, and used the restrooms before boarding the Fair Winds Catamaran for the 45 minute shore-hugging cruise to our snorkeling spot - the coral reef in Kealakekua Bay (which also houses the Captain Cook monument). We were served breakfast - muesli and banana bread - on the ride over, and then got outfitted with snorkeling fins and any additional safety equipment we needed (like a life vest or rubber tube). Then it was into the water - for 3 glorious hours, with a short break for lunch - jackfruit and chickpea sliders, salad and taro chips, with coffee. I started out quite nervous, and the staff members were kind enough to advise me to snorkel close by, holding onto a rope strung under the catamaran, till I got comfortable. Once I learned how to float and swim and readjust my equipment (when I accidentally swallowed sea water, or when water seeped into my mask), I was good to go. The crowd was friendly. There were probably 80 passengers, and folks were helpful, giving us snorkeling tips and pointing out the best spots - like a school of brilliant yellow tang, slow-moving iridescent parrotfish, octopuses, or the Hawaiian state fish - humuhumunukunukuapua'a - which stands for triggerfish with a snout like a pig! They also warned me which areas to stay away from - such as those with a proliferation of painful long-spined porcupine-like sea urchins! I enjoyed myself thoroughly, especially on my post-lunch snorkel when the water was warmer and I'd figured which spots I liked the best. I blissfully lost track of time, and barely heard the warning conch shell that summoned us back to the boat at 12:30 pm. The ride back was fun! We were given delicious cookies - macadamia chocolate nut and ginger molasses - and swung out over the Pacific farther out from shore than the route we'd taken on our way south. The ocean was choppy, and our tween and I thoroughly enjoyed the roller coaster ride, whooping and hollering as we spotted humpback whales breaching and spouting, dolphins frolicking underneath our catamaran, and hundreds of Malolo flying fish scrambling to get out of our path! Her older sister and their mother were more subdued. We were back at the harbor by 1:30 pm. Areas for improvement. -- A lot of people were not happy with the food options, but we didn't mind that as much. -- A much bigger pain point for us was that the snorkels were low quality and kept coming apart. Both our daughters had trouble, which took away from an otherwise stellar experience. We expected more, given this cost our family almost $700. Otherwise, this was a spectacular experience - highly recommended.

I don't like getting my face wet! The view box is an ideal alternative to see the fish and ocean bottom.

It's a lovely day on and in the water. The Hula Kai is our favorite boat to go snorkeling, usually in two different spots each with its unique conditions to see fish. We have had this experience many times. The people who work here are a great group. Friendly and caring. The breakfast and lunch are enjoyable.

This was my first time with Fair Wind. I've used other vessels this year and Fair Wind definitely has some major pluses. They offer a significantly larger vessel so they've got a water slide and high platform dive option which was a fun treat for all. The double decker boat has plenty of shade below and elevated views from the top deck. Food service was very attentive and we appreciated the vegetarian farm to table options. With the larger boat comes some extra flotation options and for the members in the crew (my 85 yr old mother) can also swim with a view finder in lieu of a snorkel . Grandma loved it BTW! They used multiple life guards perched high above. There was not much interaction once in the water but that was not expected. Love the free street parking option and launch point south of city center making it a great option for those staying in Captain Cook area.

Great and fun experience! Crew were all great and friendly. I would recommend to residents and visitors. We got to see a lot of spinning dolphins.

Can pregnant women join the manta tour?

Aloha Alisha, If you book with Fair Wind Cruises, our Manta has no restrictions as far as pregnancy. We operate the Manta on a 55ft catamaran with staircase water entry and restrooms. Leah

Is there a fare for those that want to go on the trip, but not snorkel?

No, we do not offer ride-along rates. While snorkeling is the objective, the tour offers much more and makes the entire experience memorable.

Do you get picked up from your hotel or you have to meet there?

We drove to the dock. Parking is small so get there early or you will need to park up the hill in a large area.

Is there a weight limit for the manta ray night snorkel? Also, is there an option for an adult to go on the excursion and not leave the boat?

You guys have life vest for people who don't know how to swim but wants to do manta ray snorkeling?

Aloha AJ, We require that everyone that wants to participate in our manta tour is a proficient swimmer with snorkeling experience. So.. we do not offer life vests.

Do you give wetsuits to kids under 13?

Aloha Emily, We rent wetsuits for 25.00 and have them available for children as well as adults.…

Can we bring our own snorkel and goggles?

    Yes you may

How many passengers does the boat take?

I think it is about 120. We have been there when it was packed, but the last time there were only about 60 on board.

Can a 5 yr old do the afternoon cruise?

There were many children on the afternoon tour with many activities for them (more if they are daring). My wife and I chose not to take our children simply due to the ability to have a 'date' and snorkel together. It is a very fun cruise for all.

Thankfully, they had space for our entire group for the sunset time (615pm check-in) and we didn't have to wait for the late-late slots. Online booking was easy-peasy (no kama'aina discount, unfortunately). We checked in (parking is street parking and there are several boats leaving from the same area, so it can be a bit of a challenge) pretty easily - there were folks out front directing us where to go for Sea Quest. I decided the $35 for the GoPro rental was a steal compared to trusting my waterproof phone pouch and I have no regrets - you can leave the camera running the whole time and they give you the SD card at the end. It was no trouble to do that once we got there, as I didn't add that when booking. They have a decent gift shop and the keiki in our party bought themselves some stuffed souvenirs. We got fitted for shorty wet suits and prescription masks if needed, and then waited for them to split us into boats and groups. We were accompanied in the water by Wylen (sorry if I butchered the spelling) and Abram, and they had the perfect blend of aloha, humor, and information. Super chill, but you also knew they meant business about Rule Number 1. From there, we boarded the boat, a small zodiac-style craft, for the 5 minute journey to Manta Village. The website made it seem like we could leave things on board, but that really wasn't the case. We left all bags, clothing, towels in a secure room on shore, slippers got collected on the pier, and small things like eyeglasses were stored in a bin on the boat. No trouble, but I wouldn't plan to take anything with you on the boat. Getting into the water was easy, and we had one keiki who was a little apprehensive about everything - they took great care to lower him into the water, and when he wanted to go back to the boat a little early, they accompanied him back to the ladder no problem. There were plenty staff around to help and also identify the mantas by their markings. And there were SO MANY mantas! We had an amazing evening watching them - I lost count and forgot many names, there were so many swimming past. We had 30-40 minutes in the water and we had multiple mantas around us the whole time. I thought the time was plenty - by the time we had about 5 minutes to go, my stomach was ready to be back on land. My only regret is not stretching my triceps beforehand - I was not expecting my arms to be so sore after holding onto the bar around the light board! We paid $135ish plus fees per person (all ages) and it was the highlight of the trip, for sure.

On the return, we greatly appreciated and enjoyed our boxed lunches (the salad was particularly great!). We had the option for complimentary light drinks or to purchase cocktails but just drank our water. Then we did the really late night manta snorkel, which was intense but truly awesome -- the mantas came within inches of our faces repeatedly, and we were often surrounded by a school of decently sized fish. Because everyone in the group is lined up along the same lighted board, you're very close to your neighbors, but the sea life is so majestic that you barely notice anything above the water. Cocktails available for purchase on the way there, and complimentary hot cocoa on the way back. We had the same competent and professional, yet friendly, crew for both outings. The guides took the tour out to the Captain Cook Monument, where the snorkeling was cool. The water was clear, the marine life plenty, and it ended up being one of the best snorkeling spots I've experienced. One tip: be sure to rent the flippers when you sign up. They made a huge difference and helped a lot in the water. They are not provided from the all in tour price. For the tour price you get the ride and snorkel mask with a floaty. They also rent life jackets if you need that. This tour is definitely geared toward people who are comfortable swimming and being on an open-air boat. If you're nervous in the water or can't swim or prefer a more relaxed boat ride, this isn't it. If you're looking for excitement, it's hard to beat. What really made the experience special were the crew members. Our captain and lifeguard were laid-back, friendly, and made everyone feel safe while keeping the atmosphere fun. The highlight for me was racing along the coastline at nearly 50 knots, bouncing across the waves and taking in incredible views of the island. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

Think twice before booking with this company…read more I chose this excursion because it was shorter (2.5 hours) while still including snorkeling and a tour of the Captain Cook area. Unfortunately, the experience did not meet expectations. The first issue was the check-in process. The confirmation email tells guests where to meet but does not provide clear instructions on where to check in. Parking at this harbor is extremely limited, and Kona traffic can be very congested. Ironically, the company's own confirmation email emphasizes allowing a one-hour buffer before and after the tour and specifically advises guests not to schedule anything within an hour of the excursion. That warning exists for a reason. Despite everyone else arriving on time, our departure was delayed by nearly 30 minutes because the crew chose to wait for two guests who were stuck in traffic. As a result, every passenger who arrived as instructed lost approximately 30 minutes of a tour they had paid for while standing in the heat waiting. It felt unfair that those who planned accordingly were penalized because others did not. I expressed my irritation to the lifeguard assigned to our boat and was met with a dismissive response rather than an acknowledgment of the inconvenience. Once we finally departed, the captain welcomed everyone and said to let the crew know if we needed anything. During the safety briefing, I asked if my son could have some water. Instead of simply providing it or explaining when it would be available, I received a sarcastic response, and my son was not given any water. While the scenery and destination are beautiful, the customer service and handling of these situations left much to be desired. Better communication, adherence to the published schedule, and more respectful interactions with guests would have made for a much better experience.
