You don't really know what could have gone wrong. Could it be the change in water, chicken, or spices? Either way, it just doesn't taste the same, which is a shame. If you're going to eat the Hainanese Chicken Rice without the Singapore perspective (or turn a blind eye) however, the local version quickly turns decent. For some reason that really boggles the mind, we just can't copy chicken rice for the life of us. So if you're hankering for some chicken rice, you might as well go to Wee Nam Kee because they have the whole formula down. Just order, drink your soup, put some chili and ginger on your chicken, and eat. This'll be the closest you'll get outside of Singapore so it isn't that bad.

My family happens to be in that chamba moment when another group as massive as ours is about to leave. The interiors of the place are adorable. It comes with numerous knick knacks that add a distinct charm to this branch which is unfortunately not as visible with the wave of people constantly in and out of the area. My kid is always tempted to touch everything on display and it can be frustrating chasing after her in a crowded restaurant. We will forever and ever always order the Personal Set of Steamed Hainanese Chicken which comes with an addicting but extremely sinful chicken rice, sides of veggies and a clear broth. Their mango shake isn't too sweet either so it's perfect for kids who need to wind down for their afternoon naps. One star less because of the crowds and the stress it brings to a haggard parent.

A Michelin-star restaurant? Here???…read more When I was younger, I never paid attention to Michelin star restaurants. It might be safe to assume I've only gone to a few and they were good and incredibly fancy. But today, without meaning to, well, I got to try a one-star Michelin restaurant : Hawker Chan. Hawker Chan originated in Singapore. The food is supposedly so good and so cheap that locals keep coming back to this restaurant. Since Filipinos are always out for franchising food around the world, I wasn't surprised this restaurant got to the Philippines somehow. Hawker Chan is situated inside SM Mall of Asia, next to the restaurant Chicken Inasal (roasted chicken restaurant, which is a local favorite) in the entertainment mall just below the cinemas. The place is clean, no lines, the restaurant was at 70% capacity, and the staff was pretty efficient. You ordered from a menu at the counter and they bring the food to you when its done. I ordered the char siew pork with vegetable noodles, it came with cooked pechay (bokchoy). The pork was seasoned and cooked to perfection, and the noodles were just how I like my noodles. Together though they were enough to satisfy my hunger in precise portions; I was glad I didn't order side dishes like veggies or tofu. Hubs got the regular noodles and roasted pork. He thought it was just okay. I think the thing that will have people keep coming back is the price : each meal is only ₽178 ($3-ish dollars) and if you do the add-ons (like marinated egg), you'll end up spending about ₽248 ($5). Sweetened iced tea is ₽50 and bottled water is ₽30. For a meal just a little over ₽500 between two people, this place is a gem. I also really liked the wait staff; I asked them to lower the AC / adjust the central cooling vent that was blasting icy air towards us, and they obliged. All in all, Hawker Chan was an experience for me, maybe a little overhyped than it should, but wow, I got to eat in a Michelin-starred restaurant! Hah. If you ever want to go to Hawker Chan, be prepared for the crowd at MOA: its the 4th biggest mall in Asia (supposedly). Lots of parking buildings to accomodate thousands of shoppers and mall goers. There's a school built above one of the new parking structures now too!

Eggs and soy sauce. Who would have thought? That was the first thing that caught me by surprise…read morewhen I finally got my hands on the Kaya Toast set. I knew what I was in for, more or less: kaya toast, butter, coffee and an egg. What I wasn't expecting was people putting soy sauce in a soft boiled egg. So... I tried it and found that it matched perfectly. The sharp saltiness of the soy blended wonderfully with the mellow egg flavor. Needless to say I probably won't be eating my eggs any other way after that. But I've rambled about eggs enough. You're probably thinking "what about the rest of the food", right? Toast Box focuses mostly on Malaysian food so apart from Kaya toast, you'll find things like Horlicks and Laksa (which I hear theirs is really good) and Nasi Goreng so it isn't all just snack food and varying versions of things you'd find in a cafe. Personally, I find I might end up going back for the Kaya. There's just something about the sweet Kaya and the butter and the bread with that creamy-salty egg and that stronger-than-what-you're-used-to coffee that makes me crave it for days on end afterward.

I…read moreimmediately loved their version of the Hainanese chicken rice when I first tried it at their Nuvali branch. As I always like to order almost the same thing every time I'm eating out at a restaurant, this is what I tried during my visit there. While Toast Box prides itself in its "Toast Box" sets which consists of toasted bread with eggs with soy sauce and a cup of coffee, they also have what they call the "Asian Delight" - which is simply put, various Asian dishes like their Curry Chicken, Hainanese Chicken Quarter Portion, Fishball Soup, Nasi Lemak or Nasi Goreng. Apart from this, the restaurant also serves various sandwiches with fillings like floss, luncheon meat, tuna, ham and cheese, Hainanese chicken and club house. Another must-try at Toast Box though is their coffee. It's prepared and brewed in a different way and I like that thier Iced Kopi Mocha had that really strong amount of caffeine so it was a bit bitter but I really liked it a lot. To go with my Iced Kopi Mocha, I ordered a Hainanese chicken set. I liked that the chicken was cooked thoroughly and the size was just right for one serving. The rice was also very flavorful and went well with the chicken. On the side, I really like the thick brown sauce/condiment and of course, the ginger. It was so good I had to ask for another extra order of this - no charge of course. The ambiance of this branch though might need some improvement as it looks a little bit old, but I don't really mind as the food speaks volumes. I will definitely come back for my Hainanese chicken fix at Toast Box when the mood arises.
