My partner introduced me to this restaurant as one of his fave places to go to for work lunch. Bibimbap is a really addictive meal. Especially when you have the option to style it the way you like. In fact, when you order your bibimbap here you are given a sheet of choices for your vegetables, meat & rice. You just tick and choose what appeals to you. You can add extras for little extra cost. But, the meals is super cheap anyway (under $10) and are quite filling. So I guess it depends on how hungry you are when adding extras. For the health conscious, you can choose brown rice or half/half brown & white rice. All of the veggies & meat prepared are cooked to order. So they are fresh! I went for the chicken and a range of veggies. The chicken was cooked with some lovely spices and sauce. Once your meal has been cooked, you can add sauces, oil, seaweed, nuts and have a serving of Kim chi. The trick is to mix it all up and enjoy! This is such a simple and well balanced meal. Nothing complicated in flavour, it is just so yummy. The Korean fermented chilli sauce is what makes it so good. Oh, and I saw on the sign outside that they cater for events. This would be an awesome alternative for a corporate lunch instead of boring sandwiches. I will keep them in mind for catering for sure!

Therefore I've been a bibimbap noob this whole time who needs to try the real thing: Korean bibimbap. Anyway, I was driving near work the other day and saw a place called Jin's Bibimbar on Goodwood Road. I knew that I needed to try this place, so popped in for lunch today. I am really happy that I did, because this place is the bibim-bomb, yo! When I entered the shop, one of the cooks came out and explained how it works. They have a form with check boxes on it that you tick and fill in your name. There are different types of rice or lettuce with no rice, cooked veggies, raw salads and meat/tofu/fish sections. You can pick a rice, 6 veggies/salads and one meat or tofu choice for $9.50 and any extras you add are either 50c or $1.50 depending on what you get. I chose chicken with mixed white and brown rice, broccoli, spinach, bean shoots, mushrooms, seaweed salad, carrot and cooked egg. The egg cost me 50c extra. They then make it up for you on the spot and you can choose your sauces and apply them to your taste. I chose their chili sauce, some sesame oil, kimchi, peanuts and some chili aoli. They also have dry seaweed, and some other Korean sauces that I didn't know. The flavour is amazing and it's a really tasty and filling lunch. I'll definitely be back.

There are a small selection of chef-prepared meals (mostly entrees) but the main idea is to cook it yourself. You order your meat/seafood and it is brought out raw, then you cook it on the bbq which is located in the centre of your table. The meat is nice and the variety is good (from your standards; chicken, lamb, beef, pork, to fancier options like ox tongue and pork belly). The seafood combination was impressive; scallops, prawns, calamari and white fish. They also give you a dish of soy sauce for dipping, and it is periodically refilled throughout the night. The "set selection" is always a good option. It comes with soup, rice and a selection of vegetable side dishes, along with your meat. The fried beancurd and pan-fried dumplings are amazing! Definitely worth a try. For dessert there is chocolate fondue (with Tia Maria). If you are celebrating a birthday they throw in free dessert (always a winner). Kids are also given a chocolate and a balloon (nice little surprise when we decided to take the kids along last time). Word of warning, don't wear anything fancy or dry clean only. Because every table has its own grill the entire restaurant fills with a haze of smoky goodness. You will also be covered in grease when you leave (from sitting so close to the grill), but it's totalky worth it. I love coming here, but always wear stuff that is easily washed. It was the first time I tried the cook-your-own style of service, which just further enhances the experience of Korean BBQ - and kids LOVE it. After visiting another Korean restaurant in the CBD, this one still remains my favourite in food and service. Korean Restaurant is only open for dinner, except for Friday when it is also open for lunch. Consequently, it can get very busy, and parties will tend to stay for hours due to the popular cook-your-own menu options, so a reservation is highly recommended. The interior is not particularly special, and despite the elaborate gate and little garden out the front, they did not opt for a traditional cultural layout and decor - it's simply geometric tables and chairs with a grill in the middle of each unit. On the walls, however, hang traditional Korean artefacts and clothing with colours that brighten the room. With any set of the cook-your-own comes a range of sides, including the popular kim chi, and a soup appetiser. The dishes are marinated in a lovely bulgogi sauce, which gives each piece of meat, fish, or vegetable a lovely smoky flavour when you take it off the grill. Dip it into the soy sauce provided for an even lovelier taste. Their service is good and friendly, and the man who I can only suspect is the owner, is a lovely guy who makes it one that stands out from other restaurants. Their emphasis - if you couldn't tell by my review - is on the cook-your-own experience, so their chef-prepared dishes are limited to a simple noodle or soup dishes. You will have to find another place if you are after a greater range of Korean cuisine, but the cooking experience is a plus to the great taste.

The chef herself came out to mix the bowl up, stirring in the gochujang to our diner's taste and absolute delight! The Seolleong Tang (Ox bone broth with slices of beef brisket, rice cake slices and potato noodles) was full of the kind of flavour one gets only from very, very slow cooking. All I know is that the tradition of barbecue is a concept that transcends culture and creed: eating meat, drinking beer, and sharing stories is something we can all enjoy (sorry vegos). The hot plate is stationed in the middle of your table, and sitting down, you're ready to get started. And, just like any backyard barbecue, you cook the food yourself. There's a large selection of meats and vegetables ready for sizzling, and you don't have to worry about making wise choices - you can always go back and try something else once you've finished your first round. The kangaroo meat is something you simply have to try. I've never been a huge fan of kangaroo (the thought of eating one of those cute little things is a little heartbreaking), but the marinated kangaroo meat at Great River has completely changed my perspective. This is a great place for special occasions or hangouts with large groups of friends, and the atmosphere is very jovial.
