The Korean Warn Veterans Memorial is southwest of the Lincoln Memorial adjacent to the promenade and just north of the JFK Hockey Fields. From a design perspective, the Korean War Veterans Memorial is one of my favorite on the National Mall. My favorite display is the depiction of service men walking through a field on patrol. This imagery is powerful. The service men are depicted as large stainless steel statues and the imagery drives home the undertone of this war and the American cost. One of the additions to the memorial is the Wall and Pool of Remembrance, depicting the names 36,574 Americans and 7,114 members of the Korean Augmentation to the United States Army whose lives were lost defending South Korea. When it rains or snows, there's a peaceful and reflective sense of gratitude and deep respect here. A quick walk through at this memorial and therefore a must-add on your National Mall itinerary.
We walked to see if the family member of a friend was listed on the wall and it was. What a moving experience. The place is a solemn recognition that freedom is not free. The memorial has a wall with the names of those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. There is a water feature and statues of soldiers.
Truly a remarkable memorial. I like how this one requires you to walk through and read along while you honor the veterans who served in the Korean War. The 19 statues of veterans in ponchos are very realistic. It's a somber experience at night but that's what makes it to real. Some other monuments on the mall are large statues you walk up to and appreciate that way. It's a moving experience being nearly eye-to-eye with the statues themselves.

The Korean War Veterans Memorial commemorates the titanic sacrifices made by millions of Americans and United Nation members who served in the three-year war. Most memorable are the steel statues of service members in ponchos trekking through a bushy field - a symbolic replica of the rough weather and Korean rice paddies that the veterans endured. At night, the darkness and shadows intensify their visages of apprehension, anxiety, fear, determination, and exhaustion. What a chilling and solemn experience. Highly recommend visiting.
I don't know much about the Korean War (or any war for that matter), but the Korean War Veterans Memorial is one of my favourite memorials in DC -- it's so visually interesting. I cannot adequately explain what the memorial looks like, but SOME of the MANY features of the memorial are the "Pool of Remembrance", a black granite wall with the words "Freedom is not free", and 19 stainless steel statues of soldiers, in various poses. (I think I read somewhere that each soldier is unique.) I've been to the memorial twice -- the first time in 2016, and the second time in 2022. During my second visit there was construction going on, but it did not take away from the visit at all, and I look forward to my third visit in a few years! The Korean War Memorial in Washington D.C. is a powerful and moving tribute to the sacrifices made by American servicemen and women during the Korean War. The memorial is located on the National Mall and is best enjoyed on foot. There are refreshment stands and restrooms accessible nearby so it makes for an enjoyable sight with family and young ones. The 19 soldiers statues dressed in full combat gear, emerging from a wall of granite is quite a work of art. The soldiers are arranged in a formation that suggests they are on the march, and their expressions are determined and resolute. The Pool of Remembrance is located at the base of the statues. It is so great to be able to learn more about all of the statues and their significance throughout the National Mall and this one is just as moving.
The Korean War Veterans Memorial was opened in the National Mall in 1995, so it was not here when I last visited Washington DC. You will find the Memorial just a short walk away from the Lincoln Memorial. I'm so glad I was finally able to see this in person. "Freedom is not free" That simple, yet powerful phrase is etched in the marble wall, just off from the Pool of Remembrance. To me, the most interesting part of this Memorial is "The Column". These are the 19 stainless steel, larger than life statues that represent a platoon on patrol. All 4 branches of the armed forces are represented among the soldiers and each statue is between 7'3 and 7'6 and weighs nearly 1000 pounds each! Just recently, in April 2021, the National Park Service started adding a memorial wall with the names of the 36,574 Americans and approximately 8,000 U.S. Army Korean augmentation forces who were lost in the War. This was just recently reopened this past July, on the 69th anniversary of Armstice (July 27, 1953). This is a stunning and touching Memorial and I am feel fortunate to have the opportunity to visit it. 5 stars.
Freedom is not free. North Korea, with its friends China and the then Soviet Union, invading South Korea are to this day unacceptable. Their actions have caused countless deaths, injuries, and furthered the suffering of Korean families between the DMZ. The Kim Dynasty is disgusting. Will leave my sentiments there, as I'm grateful for Americans and other nations around the world, who at least got this to that parallel. This memorial is somber, which is appropriate considering the events. Countless GI's suffered, and quite a few gave all. It's in the national mall area of NW DC. The statues of GI's on patrol is an attention getter. It's a reminder of the harsh and vicious battleground. The names carved in the wall of remembrance. To all who served you have my respects, to those lost my condolences. I love this country dearly, and want one day all Korea to be united. Who knows if or when, but if in town, be sure to visit this sacred site.

When you walk up on these soldiers in the battlefield it is almost breathtaking. It's so lifelike and we went at dusk so the whole atmosphere was chilling. If you don't do anything else while you are in DC... go here! It's incredibly well done. read more
I happened onto this memorial by chance when walking around the large park area. The memorial features forever soldiers on active duty during the Korean War. The figures are large and lifelike with details galore. The backdrop to it is trees with a manicured lawn.There are lots of photo opportunities.I felt like I was witnessing an actual moment in the war. From the pics I've seen it's even more striking at night. I'd like to go back to experience it. I'm glad I happened upon it and encourage you to check it out. It will evoke feelings so keep that in mind if that is not something you're looking for. read more

Again, all the memorials in the area are well done, but this is definitely one of the more creative ones. As you can see, the reflections of the soldiers in the wall of the memorial. Tucked away in the corner, this memorial might be missed, but it's worth the time to seek out. read more

This is a beautiful monument to honor the veterans of the Korean War. It's very tasteful and well done and you can see the names of the people lost in the conflict. The fountains and reflecting pools are beautiful as well. Well worth the visit. read more

The Korean War Veteran Memorial is absolutely the most haunting of all of the war memorials. I definitely recommend that you visit this Memorial at night if you have the option. The looks on the faces of the statues of the soldiers are so sad and moving. Freedom is indeed, not free. The memorial garden is pretty large. Expect to spend a minimum of 20 minutes and as long as 45 minutes. I only used one lens here, my 18-55 was plenty, but I do recommend a tripod, especially at night read more
You'll see 4 parts of the memorial: the 19 soldiers on patrol, the Wall and Pool of Remembrance, the United Nations Wall, and the Mural Wall. I liked all of the details that went into creating the 19 stainless steel statues, they looked very realistic as they wore their ponchos in that severe weather. The Wall of Remembrance has the names of 36,574 Americans and 7,114 of the Korean Augmentation to the US Army. Admission is free. I recommend just taking the train and walking over here. Parking can be very limited. Any time of the day is fine to see it, but you'll see the most crowds of people in the afternoon. read more
The Korean War Memorial is on the National Mall and is a short walk from the Lincoln Memorial. There's a long wall that has etches of soldiers and also statues of many soldiers looking in all directions. It feels like wherever you walk there is a soldier looking at you. The memorial honors the 43,000 service members. There is some work in progress to create a wall of remembrance, and I'd be interested in seeing what it looks like when it's completed. It's in a triangular formation with military personnel from different factions of the US Army on the main section and a sandstone wall along one of the sides. The wall is very illuminating at night and makes the landmark all the more impressive. It's situated a couple of hundred yards from the Lincoln memorial. As you stand of the bottom of the steps of the Lincoln memorial with the great man behind your back. Walk off the the right at an angle of about 45 degrees and within a couple of minutes you will see the memorial right in front of you. At night, the statues have something haunting about them while the figures themselves express apprehension, anxiety and fear. Really moving piece of architecture. read more
Have always been meaning to visit the National Mall and finally did. SO and I worked our way from the Capitol Bldg, Washington Monument, WW II Memorial and then encountered the Korean War Memorial. Heart strings were definitely getting tugged thinking about all the sacrifices that were made to push back the communists. IMO, I wish General MacArthur ran the operation to the end, but it's easy to say when my life is not at stake. I thank the U.S.A. and all the Korean War veterans for laying the groundwork for a strong political and economic South, placing meaning in all the sacrifices that were made. To see the North today and what would have become of the South without the help of the U.S. and almost 30 other countries is a stark reminder of how lucky I am to live in a free society. read more

If you are visiting DC seeing the monuments and memorials are a must. This memorial is on the Memorial Loop trail. This memorial consists of multiple structures that honor those that served during the Korean War. The column has 19 statues that represents a platoon on patrol. It is worth checking out if you are in the area. read more

When I first came to DC, I started at the museums to the east and walked my way down the National Mall to the Lincoln Memorial, checking out the sights along the way. I turned north and east after the Lincoln Memorial to head toward the White House Christmas tree, as the sun was setting and got to see the Vietnam War Memorial and never took the time to go south towards the Thomas Jefferson Memorial. This time, we went south and west and we were able to see some really interesting memorials that don't get enough mention, even though they are wonderful. The Korean War Veterans Memorial is one of those. It's still within the confines of the National Mall so it's not a far walk from the Lincoln Memorial at all. The statues of soldiers coming through the grass and mud is so thought provoking and moving. There is also a wall here, like the Vietnam one, with names and faces. It's worth a trip for the statues alone, but definitely worth the memorial in itself. read more
This is a very simple, but yet powerful memorial to the veterans of the Korean War. It is well maintained and is a short walk from the National mall and all the nearby monuments such as the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, Vietnam War Memorial, and the MLK Memorial. It is a very peaceful memorial consisting of sculptures of 19 life-sized soldiers who are trudging through cold, wind-swept rice paddies and a reflective granite mural wall with over 2,400 actual photographs of the Korean War embossed on it. You will also see one of the most fitting quotes that you will ever find there, "Freedom is not Free". The sculptures are very realistic and if you visit the monuments website you can get information on each individual sculpture. This memorial is impressive and definitely worth a visit. There is metered street parking within walking distance and paid parking garages a little bit further of a walk. If you are looking at parking in a garage. I highly recommend planning a head and giving one of the parking apps a try. I was able to get $10 parking for an entire day (9AM to 6PM). read more
I really liked the new added improvements that are underway at the Korean War memorial. There is the original sculptures in the representation of the rice fields the soldiers fought in. There are laser etched pictures of actual veterans from when the war occurred on the perimeter wall which really stands out at night. They had a large amount of new work on stone work behind the exhisting memorial which I think will add a black etched names of soldiers to this monument when completed. read more
An often overlooked war memorial among more well known exhibits. Many people forget about the Korean War when they think about war history. The Korean War Veterans Memorial is often forgotten about too. It's in the middle of so many interesting must see sites that you can easily miss it. The memorial has several parts that come together. A unique thing about it is the sculptures of the soldiers marching. Rarely do you see this much detail put into a memorial. There's 19 sculptures, complete with faces expressing various emotions, amazing in the detail that's include in these. Besides the statues, the other main feature is a wall, much smaller than the Vietnam Memorial but still impressive. The wall, like that one, contains the names of all soldiers who lost their lives. This area has a small pond surrounded by a few benches and trees. It's a nice area to sit and think about these kinds of events. The area is actually beautiful, which is pretty ironic considering it's subject. read more

After my visit to The Lincoln Memorial. I stopped by here. The Memorial was under construction. But I still could see the memorial. I saw a lot of statues. I walked around for 10 minutes. Thank you. read more
8/7/21 Although I been here before, it seem my mind had forgotten where this memorial was. Some land Mark's have changed for some major upgrades/makeovers. The wall with a thousand faces sllook back at you and the idea of them peering at you can be unnerving at times. The memorial has a slogan saying "Freedom Is Not Free." Really? Nope, what did it cost to have the freedoms we have and love and abuse at times? What price had to be paid? Many many answers can given for this statement. Nevertheless, the people who do not understand or comprehend the statement, might eventually know the the answer to this statement. The work that went into these stone peices are amazing. It did look like some of the statues were damaged or worn out. This area is very peaceful, but I look forward to seeing the finished area when it is all said and done. read more

This is one of those things that if you have never done it, you definitely need to do it, but you probably won't want to come again in the near future. I haven't been to DC for over a decade, and I have no memory of seeing this monument during my first trip. I found the monument to be very powerful and artistically well done. My favorite part of the monument was the wall in the background that is engraved/etched with soldiers faces from the war. I feel like of all of the monuments/museums/cemeteries and things that I did in DC, this monument humanized the war of the most for me. One thing I learned after doing the monuments is that it is best to go early in the morning before everything opens, ideally between 8 AM and 10 AM. It is pretty empty during those times, plus the weather is really nice if you plan on walking between all of the monuments. I went around 5 PM after all of the museums closed and it was very crowded. Overall, I would recommend for everyone to do this twice: the first time as a young adult/young married couple, and the second time with your kiddos when they're a bit older. read more

Although the Vietnam Memorial is humbling in its own way, the Korean Memorial is haunting. One can feel the fatigue of the soldiers. It just added to the experience that we visited on an overcast and rainy day. Another MUST in D.C. read more
Thanks to our Trolley Tour, we arrived at this AMAZING memorial. All I can say is , "WOW". The soldiers look lifelike!! Their expressions!! I think they did a GREAT job making this memorial. Quite moving. It's definitely a must see. Located walking distance from the Lincoln Memorial. read more
