After hearing about it from a friend, I did a tour with Purple Alpaca Farms. Located in Boonville…read morein the Triad area, it was about 2 hours away from the me but most of it was a straight shot on I-40. During the tour, you get to learn about alpacas (what they're like, alpacas in the states, etc.) and interact with them as well. You can pet some of the more cuddly ones (they'll tell you which spots the alpacas prefer) and feed them hay. The farm has quite a few other animals from the people-friendly dogs that greeted us to chickens and ducks that you can hold if you feel comfortable. Our experience was definitely worth the $12/person cost!

There are nice fire pits with grills at each site and we did bring our own firewood so we cooked on those. "Firewood" is on site but it consisted of moldy, unsplit pine logs. It rained Saturday in the early evening turning the area in front of and around the tents into a quagmire of mud, simple wood chips at least in front of the tents to keep down the mud would have been nice.

They have an amazing variety of pumpkins to choose from and delicious treats to enjoy while you're there. It's such a warm, family-friendly atmosphere and definitely a staple spot in Winston-Salem to visit with friends and loved ones during the season.

I prefer the white pumpkins. What about you?  The apples are DELICIOUS! We like the Magnum Bonum. The owners say it's great for baking. We like the taste. The Honey Crisp apples are huge!  They have pumpkin butter, candy, and peanuts.  FOOD TRUCKS: They have food trucks on the property which makes for a great day trip to Winston-Salem!   Here are two that we recommend:    Papa Bears Coffee-n-Donuts, the owner makes his own pumpkin icing to go over his donuts! They are on Facebook.  Graffiti Grub had her grand opening today at Hawks! She has iced hot chocolate! Coffee and treats. She will be selling candied apples and the apples come from Hawks. She doesn't have social media yet, but I hope you will stop by and support local.   I saw an Ice Cream truck setting up but didn't get the name.  Other unique features: Grab a red wagon and fill it up with pumpkins and apples, or take your kids for a ride around the patch.   Lots of photo props and opportunities, but if you're a professional photographer please check in with the owners.  Fun for the whole family!!
