I came here on a Saturday for the musical theater jazz class, and it was so much fun! The teacher was a sub since the regular teacher was out, but she definitely knew what she was talking about and was very sweet. We started with warm ups, then across the floors, and then into a fun combo. I liked that the class was an hour and a half, because it really gave us time to do everything and didn't feel rushed. The prices are not bad for drop in and the studio is very cute, though it does get a bit hot in there. read more

I stopped by Koresh for the first time to try out Noelle Martone's beginners adult musical theatre class. I registered online (about 25 dollars per class) and headed over to the studio about 15 minutes for my class. While it's a bit nerve wracking walking into a studio for the first time, especially after not being in one for over a decade, the staff was so helpful and welcoming. The young woman at the front desk helped me check in and directed me to the studio. She gave me a heads up that another class was wrapping up and to hang out on the side and take a seat until my class started. Noelle's class was fantastic! She created such an inclusive and welcoming space. She encouraged making adjustments in the warmups and choreography to fit your abilities and comfort. The class started with stretches, then some across the floor warm ups, then learning the number and ended with an optional cool down. There was a nice mix of abilities throughout the class. The space is large and clean with room to leave your personal belongings in eyesight. Will definitely be doing this again soon! read more

I have been taking open ballet at Koresh for years! They have a variety of classes for all different skill levels. Eva and Fang both teach amazing a challenging ballet classes. There are always a wide range of levels in class and they do a great job of keeping it fun, but challenging. I am a professional dancer and I find the classes challenging and great for stamina building! They are currently open for in-person and virtual classes. I have taken in-person classes and it felt amazing to be in a studio again! Just know that masks are required all during class. They are limiting class sizes and I feel very safe here. I definitely recommend Koresh for ballet classes! I hope to try some of their other styles in the future as well! read more

The instructors are amazing and their passion to progressing adult dancers is inspiring. During the time I was there, I significantly progressed with Eva's amazing instruction. Highly recommended.! If you take class at STEPS and Peridance in NYC and at Lou Conte in Chicago then this is the place to be! Their open ballet classes are excellent and the location is not to be beat. Gary and Fang are the best - despite the designation of skill level everyone from pros on pointe to true beginners takes their classes, their combos are "dance-y" and fun and very high yield. So glad to be 30 yrs old and still have a solid ballet studio open to adults, and not feel out of place with dancers half my age and half my size. There are many class choices, I have taken ballet, hip hop, and jazz. I love ballet the best, jazz is more like modern, I like the end of class when you do small combinations. I wish the majority of class was dancing the combinations and less stretching exercises. The hip hop was totally fun and chill. Only took it once, because for the expensive price tag per class, I'd rather spend money on ballet. The instructors are super talented and know their stuff. Most are professional dancers already so you know it's legit. The new building is much nicer and more spacious than the old building. The studio rooms still need better AC or fans because it gets so hot in there. The dressing rooms are now downstairs, and a little bigger than the old building. Overall I love Koresh and the opportunity it gives adults to dance again!!! read more

This place makes me channel my inner Julia Stiles circa Save the Last Dance, wishing I was more Center Stage than awkward white girl koreshing ... and burning. Had to. WARNING: THEY HAVE MOVED! Just checked out their new studio for a free class yesterday (located at 20th and Rittenhouse) and LOVED IT. Hated myself for being an uncoordinated mess, but whatevs. I don't know that the new studio itself is that much more spacious (although the area to hang out in pre-class is, and there is now a small locker room) Then again the huge crowd that turned out for the free class probably did not help... HIP HOP CLASSES I've been to Sammy's beginner (intro $5 class-print the coupon off their site!) and intermediate (lol I know, but it was free) hip hop and he is amazing. He is a hilarious, fierce, fast dancing, fast talking, AWESOME teacher, and he will make you wish you were as cool as him and make you want to be a hip hop dancer. His classes are basically some warm ups, then he teaches you a routine, and then halves of the room alternate doing the routine. Everyone is very supportive and claps and doesn't give you death stares even if you suck and can't get the steps and are always in everyone's way because you are 5 beats behind. CAVEATS: 1. If you are not a dancer and just want a workout class, like me, this will be challenging, but you'll get a workout for sure. 2. The prices. They are high. $20 is steep if you are not a dancer. I'm shocked. I have never seen a worse teacher of dance as here. My child took kids' hip hop and the teacher Sheeron is clearly a very talented dancer but a terrible teacher. He goes through the moves way too fast for children, and barely breaks down the moves for them. His main approach to teaching is just to have the kids follow his dance moves, which he does too fast for them. And he doesn't provide any useful feedbck to them. The management of Koresh should provide training to Sheeron to be a better teaching. Just a little training and feedback would be useful. I considered giving management some feedback about how to help Sheeron be a better teacher, but I read so many reviews here about how the manager here yells at people. read more

My favorite place in Philly to go take drop in dance classes! They have classes everyday of the week for beginners to advanced professionals and every style of dancer! Teachers all hold high credentials and give lots of individual attention to every student. Classes are kept small and intimate which is hard to find in a big city. The studios are all large and absolutely beautiful, the lighting projected can really change the mood depending on which class you are in allowing you to really get in the zone. The drop in schedule for adults allows you to train when you want working around your everyday schedule not forcing you into any commitments. A great studio, great classes. read more

I took a beginning ballet class at this studio earlier this month. I had benefitted from classes there years ago. However, I feared that I may lack the strength and stamina for a full class in a dance studio because I had not been in a dance studio since 2019. The class was well-taught. I was able to fit in appropriate groups with other students. I benefitted from the experience. The class was in the upper studio, a lovely space with a sprung floor. I was able to jump on the floor without problems. By contrast, jumping on the concrete floor in my kitchen is painful. I anticipate returning to this studio for ballet regularly to continue my training. read more

I've been taking ballet classes with Fang, Eva, and Tommy for nearly two years and have progressed from an absolute novice to learning pointe by taking 5+ classes a week (yes, I have a full time job). Whether you're an adult who wants to seriously learn classical ballet technique (Vaganova), or you danced as a child and want to get back into it, or you just want to move and stretch, Koresh is perfect. The studio offers evening weekday and weekend ballet classes from intro (no experience) to intermediate (years of experience) levels, making it possible to "train" and progress, even as an adult with an entirely distinct career. Another reviewer commented that the intro was too hard - it's an open class! Anyone who is new to ballet will need a few classes to familiarize themselves with the basics (positions, tendu, etc). Regular attendees run the gamut of age, skill level, race, orientation, gender identity and expression. This is one of my favorite places in the city, and I've tried and tried to find other places to dance here, but I keep coming back to Koresh. Probably the lack of need to drive (if you live in Center or University City) is part of it. There are levels of classes for me (adult former dancer) and most other people I can think of who might want to come here. Admittedly, it's not a 'family studio', taken to mean 'the studio is a family'--yes, I've had that conversation with the director of another studio in the city--and they might not be the friendliest if you're not (yet!) a regular, but really, it's worth becoming so. I'll trade a friendly welcoming feel for high-quality classes that are challenging and make me work any day. Melissa teaches a very technical modern-jazz, and will challenge you; I tend to like Roni's combos the best, he's also more likely to change up the warmup on you. Tyger's class says beginner hip-hop, but don't believe it, it's not intro-beginner level, but more like...I've-taken-a-hip-hop-class-before-at-some-point-in-my-life-but-it's-not-my-main-jam level. Sammy's class is more like Zumba style to hip-hop/rap music, rather than choreo (at least the one I took, it wasn't my cup of tea so haven't gone back to them recently). read more

Koresh is easily one of my favorite places in Philadelphia. There's nothing like a Sunday morning 90 minute dance class taught by a professional teacher in a dance style of your choice, before the sleepy Center City wakes up to a rainy day. I've found a ton of enjoyment trying out multiple styles of dance here, and I love that Koresh offers adult classes in various levels of proficiency. The dance studio is professionally managed and beautiful, and the folks are super sweet. The classes/teachers were fine, but the heat in the ballet room is unbearable. It's kept way too hot. Everyone's face is red after tendues. I even googled it to see if hot ballet was a thing. It was so warm I felt light-headed and it was like that both times I went. I don't know if it's a deliberate choice or if the A/C is bad, so maybe I'll try again in winter. (And I'm NOT talking about the hot/humidity that comes from walking into a room where people were sweating. I've taken class in LA and NYC and never had this problem.) The owner is the reason to avoid this place. I had my wallet/identity stolen (not at the studio, in public) and I had a really bad day taking care of all the nonsense canceling cards/filing disputes at the bank/ordering a new id. I just wanted to take my evening hip hop at the end of it. My wallet had my fob card for the 7 classes I had left that WERE ABOUT TO EXPIRE. The owner tells me I need to pay for class this evening out of pocket because I can't prove who I am. But the classes I paid for are about to expire, so why would I pay you for a single class that is more expensive when I already paid for 7 classes that are about to be worthless? The bank was more understanding than the dance studio! I showed up early so I could give them any info (my address, the last class I took, the last four digits of my credit card) in order to prove who I am. THE OWNER REFUSED THIS INFO AND FINALLY AGREED WHEN I SHOWED HIM MY SOCIAL SECURITY CARD, which I happened to have a photo of on my phone. My soc card, really? He mentions nothing about cancelling the stolen fob until I bring it up: "well isn't it just as easy for someone to come in and use my fob and steal my classes?" The entire approach and concern was completely backward, advocating for the very thief that stole my wallet and then attempting to hustle more $ from me as the solution. He didn't forget to remind me it would cost $2 to replace the fob. More $$$. Forget about me. How can koresh make $ from my sucky, yet completely understandable situation? Four years ago I had a BAD break in my ankle and I had classes expire on me. I asked for an extension and the answer was no until I marched a dang doctors note in there telling him he had to extend my classes for health reasons. He didn't even look at the note when I handed it to him, he finally yielded and extended the classes with a simple click on the computer. Did he really need the note? Did I really have to run that errand to my doctors office? No, he could have just been understanding about dance culture and the fact that INJURIES HAPPEN. However... the hip hop teachers are the best in the city. Sam, Michelle and Tyger are FIRE. Only reason I go back. read more

However, Nir Koresh (one of the owners) has always been incredibly rude to teachers, to parents and has talked down to me multiple times. I've only taken zumba classes before, and taking a hip hop dance class was definitely out of my comfort zone...but it was on my bucket list and I accomplished it here! My friend comes to Koresh regularly and I decided to join because the website had a $5 coupon for me to try my first class! I took Tyger B's beginning hip hop class on Saturday and I have to say that being such a noob and having a lot of trouble following the choreography (partly because I have a terrible memory...including my muscle memory) made the 90-minute class feel really long. It's definitely not something I'd want to do by myself, but when I also brought a friend along who was in the same boat I was I was more willing to make mistakes and to ask for help. Tyger was really gentle and patient, which I appreciated because if he was anything but those things I probably would not have felt comfortable. He really broke down the choreography into more manageable parts, but I still wish that for those of us who had trouble keeping up he would have done the choreography a couple more times before walking around the studio to give us feedback. I found myself relying heavily on other dancers in front of me who seemed more experienced but still weren't exemplars. I definitely sweated a lot and walked away pretty swore, so it's a good workout. Be sure to bring water to hydrate! I signed up for 5 more classes at a discount (you have to use it within 2 months)...taking my other friends with me next time so they can try it out! I may not be naturally gifted, but I'd like to think I'm teachable so hopefully I'll get better :) Lastly, the front desk staff here is really friendly. I came here for the first time and they explained to me how the class would work (90 minutes with a stretch break in the middle), got me set up with my key card for my future classes, and were able to inform me about the dance studio's history. I've been taking class here for a year- and I keep coming back even though it's a ridiculous commute I come when ever I get the chance. I've taken Ballet, Jazz and hip hop with several of the instructors here and I have enjoyed each class- I feel challenged and inspired every time I step on the floor- and it makes my heart sing EVER time I leave to catch the train. 10/10 best in philly. read more

I really like dancing at Koresh and I'm so happy to have found them right here in center city! I'm definitely a dancer... I've been dancing most of my life, throughout college, and also taught dance for many years so I'm no stranger to the studio. With that being said, it's hard to find a studio that's conveniently located that has classes which aren't all "beginner ballet for adults". (Which is awesome, but not for me!) So here's Koresh... They offer not only the beginner level classes for the newbies but they also accommodate the more advanced and professional dancers with classes like Tap (my fave), Modern Jazz (Shannon M is awesome!) Ballet, and Hip Hop. They've recently moved to 20th & Rittenhouse and the space is really nice. It's below street level so there's no windows which may or may not be a sweaty, muggy, mess next summer. Basically, if you're a dancer over the age of 15 and you're at any stage in your dance training, you can find a class at Koresh. read more

Philadelphia is beyond lucky to have such a special place for **all-level** dancers. The commitment, passion and dedication EACH & EVERY teacher has to benefit every person walking through the door, is unmatched. The classes MAY be tough for some, because they encourage growth. The instructors give you personal attention/ critiques because they want YOU to get the most from each class, and not just TAKE your money. It's a compliment when a world-renowned instructor gives you feedback, I promise. As passionate artists themselves, they receive the ultimate benefit from your growth/enjoyment in learning something new. This is also the reason why their studio etiquette may seem strict to outsiders. The last thing they want is to injure a new student that arrives late and isn't properly warmed up and/or disrupt the class they are giving that they took 3 hours to prepare beforehand. In all actuality, they are more strict because of their high-level knowledge in delivering the best quality classes you can find. I never write YELP reviews, but I would hate to see someone miss out on such an amazing place, because of negative reviews of those who do not understanding KDC's intent. This is a special place, and as a professional dancer, traveled all over -- studying with various companies, this place is a GIFT. Lastly, remember that every instructor was once a beginner, so you should never feel silly while making mistakes or being challenged. Chellie's Tuesday night hip hop classes are the BEST! She really makes you feel comfortable and will actually explain to you the dance moves. I took one of the "beginner to intermediate" hip hop classes with Tyger and decided I won't go back to one of his classes. Personally his teaching skill wasn't my cup of tea, his class also is NOT for beginners. I couldn't even imagine if a beginner walked in to his class. Wording should be changed. Other then that, I recommend this studio to anyone in the city wanting to take hip hop classes. (can't speak for any of the other classes they have) read more

I would take the negative reviews with a mountain of salt as the feedback is not related to the actual courses. The classes are PHENOMENAL here mostly because the instructors are top notch dancers and teachers. The studios will make you feel comfortable enough and you'll have enough room for the mirror. Terrible policies and rude staff. Also, this place is expensive and it's not worth the extra cost. The first time I came here they didn't tell me there was a $5 first class special. Right after class I came out and asked for credit in my account and they refused. Ok didn't have, but the next week I bought a class pack. These things expire super fast. If you miss a week, you're out of luck. If you go on vacation you have no chance. On top of it all, they have a ridiculous $25 credit card minimum, which is above the cost of a single class, which is $20! Don't waste your time here. When this place goes out of business the owners can kick themselves for hiring rude staff and running the business into the ground with stupid policies. read more

The negative reviews are confusing because they don't address the actual classes... I get that maybe the vibe here isn't for everyone but the classes are excellent for the most part. I'm a professional dancer and this is where I come in Philadelphia for my ballet classes. Right now they a combination of EXCELLENT ballet teachers, better than most studios in NYC. Eva, Fang and Amy A. And Amy N. all teach solid professional classes that would be the quality you'd find at a ballet company. I after that sometimes the front desk staff is iffy but they have a lot of young intern dancers filling in now and they're usually sweet and helpful. The prices are good, I pay less than $10/class with a class care and union discount. You really can't beat that. I don't have to waste my time going to NYC when I can get better a few blocks from my house. In fact, many NYC dancers come down for Eva's morning ballet class. She is amazing. The location is right in the heart of Rittenhouse Square, Philadelphia's most upscale neighborhood, so it's great if you want to grab dinner at a trendy restaurant afterwards... For parking, not so much unless you don't mind paying a valet service. Luckily I can walk there. read more

I haven't done ballet since I was a kid, but I LOVE the Intro to Ballet Class at this place. I've often felt like ballet classes, even beginner ones are too advanced for me at other place, and this particular class is challenging, but not filled with professional dancers trying to brush up on their skills like at other places. All the instructors I've had have been very professional and pay attention to detail. I haven't tried any of their other classes, but my friend also loves their hip hop and jazz classes. read more

I've been a dancer all my life and I was so happy to find this place after moving to Philly. It's hard to find adult dance classes that aren't geared towards beginners, but Koresh offers many styles and levels. Yay! The schedule is good too, with a variety of classes in the evenings and weekends for us working-types with 9-5 jobs. I've tried all the styles here and haven't had a bad class yet. Sammy's hip hop is amazing, especially the In the Mix Mondays: 1st Monday of the month, live DJ, and they have recently added club lights and a smoke machine. So much fun! Sunday tap with Kat is a great class, but I will say it is more intermediate than beginner. Koresh has a very unique style of jazz that is challenging but fun. For someone who has been attending this studio for over a year I think viewers can take my feedback for what it is, the absolute truth. I finally had enough tonight in the hip hop class and walked out on sammy's class. I will never again return to this studio. I am 27 years old, danced throughout college so my main reason for going to classes is I love hip-hop and as a med student I love blowing steam. What I don't love is, is being yelled at (When I say yelled at, I don't mean personally, he yells at everyone). Sammy likes to yell at people and not at all in a nice and constructive way. He has addressed this fact and tells people not to take it personally. I hope he knows I absolutely do not take it personally but I find it disrespectful to not only myself but every one else in the studio. I have been bothered by this for a long time now but just ignored it because hey where else would I go that is convenient and close to where I live. Finally had enough of him and his rude, non-constructive way of criticizing. As an adult I don't see why I would waste money that I am paying for to hear someone yell all class. Yes sammy can make jokes and be funny on occasion but when he is in a mood trust me its not a fun class. Try going to class consistently and see his true colors. In addition to sammy's attitude, what is also not great is the business owners brother. I literally feared walking into the front office because of what a creep he is. He made it a point to ask where my boyfriend was almost every time I walked in (because he has seen him drop me off every week). He is incredibly unprofessional and just down right a creep. I am so glad I am finally being able to say this. Enough is enough and good riddance. Classes are NOT phenomenal I am sorry Sam E. They are fine if you are a beginner but do not expect to be challenged in any of the hip hop classes if you are a seasoned dancer. Worst experience ever. I tried to come to their hip hop dance class on Monday night and after driving around for 20 minutes looking for parking. Parking 6+ blocks away at the parking lot they suggested and walking back I was not let in because I was late to the class. This was my first time coming and their website doesn't mention the 10 minute cut off for attending the class. As a first timer, there should have been more consideration given. I will not be back and encourage others not to go unless you like terrible service. read more

Tried their adult beginner hip hop class tonight. I love to dance and thought it would be fun for exercise and to learn some new moves. This class is NOT for beginners. Instead it seemed like it was for dancers who were maybe new to hip hop. The steps were simple but they were taught so quickly I couldn't keep up. And the last 15 minutes of class were spent going over and over and over the dance in 2 groups- super frustrating and embarrassing having to repeat the dance a million times in front of the other group when I couldn't get the dance right. I would not recommend this class to actual adult beginners- no matter how much you love to dance. This class requires some background in taking dance classes. The instructor barely teaches the steps before putting it to music and then adding more. I left that class very frustrated and disheartened. read more

Caveat: that the only classes I have taken here are Hip-Hop with Sammy, and Introduction to Ballet. 1 - Front desk etiquette here is TERRIBLE... If you're expecting any level of customer service or courtesy, perhaps a returned "hello" or "have a good night," FORGET IT. The person at the front desk (usually the same young lady) is always pretty unfriendly and rude - as is the gentlemen often sitting in the office (I assume he is the director). I come to class straight from work and am always 5-10 minutes late (they allow you to enter up to 15 minutes after class starts). I'm sorry, but I'm a paying, ADULT customer. I am not a child, or a professional dancer. I don't need anyone barking "hurry up, you're late, we're closing the doors soon" at me every time in walk in the door - it's rude and very unprofessional. 2 - Business practices here are VERY questionable... I used a $5 class coupon for my first class back in June, and was almost not permitted to use it because I "looked familiar." According to the gentleman from the office, he was pretty sure I had been there before - for the record, I had been living in Texas for 6 years prior to June. Also, after my first class, I purchased a 20 class punch card, and was charged full price even though I provided a student ID at the time of purchase (they offer a student discount). When I pointed this out I got a dirty look and was then told by the gentleman in the office I could have it taken care of after the class. After class he was gone, and the young lady at the desk told me I would have to come back the next day to have it straightened out. Needless to say I kept getting the run around every time I asked about it, and eventually just let it go. 3 - The Introduction to Ballet class IS NOT an introductory class... If you're an absolute beginner and don't have any ballet background, this is not the class for you. It's not the most welcoming environment for absolute beginners, and you WILL feel like a DEER IN HEADLIGHTS! I found an absolute beginner class at the Ailey Extension in NYC (I spend a lot of time in the city), and there is such a WORLD of difference between the two classes.. 4 - Last but certainly not least - SAMMYS HIP HOP CLASS This class is AWESOME, and so is Sammy. He is fun and energetic, his choreography is challenging, and the class is a really good workout. HE is the only reason I've been coming here.
