The "new" Cibo on Waymouth street is nurturing the look of "The Hipster Barista" with almost every male behind the coffee machine sporting the on trend beard of the genre. The store keeps it's main doors wide open to the street meaning you can often smell it before you can see it......yum the downside being that it can be very chilly if you are trying to escape Radelaides winter. The service is friendly and quick during the morning take-away rush with the "and a name for your order" process but it slows down a little later in the day to suit the more relaxed clientele. For the dine in experience, the buzzer system alerting you that it's time to pick up your goods from the counter is impersonal but effective. The store is boasting some very trendy decor and is fitting in well with the many higher-end restaurants along Waymouth st. Drop by in the middle of the day and you are sure to see many suits conducting midday meetings. All in all another great addition to the Cibo portfolio.

For too long has the Adelaide Hills been old and outdated. Over the last 5 years we have seen some impressive changes. This is one of them. The décor inside is really well planned. All the colours work together, green being their spark of colour. And certain little touches of green are really clever. For example, I brought my dogs along to the café and I was handed two green bones on a plate for them to enjoy! How sweet is that? Do you know any other cafes that offer your pups a treat? Not many that is for sure! The menu is simple, but well thought out. I ordered the DIY Brekkie, which you have poached eggs and toast as the base and you can add other items. I decided on haloumi and avocado. Eggs were cooked prefect. But only one slice of bread? It was quite a costly meal of over $20, so I thought I would get two slices at least. Oh well... My partner tried the truffle scrambled eggs. Which I thought was much better value. So much flavour and cooked really well. Fluffy and not overdone! I am glad to see this café in Aldgate. Our reserved table was waiting for us upstairs. We were all enjoying the warmth from both the heaters and the interior fitout as we walked through. Green and wood is used throughout the space. A very lovely fitout indeed. First shock would be the pricing of the food dishes. I don't mind paying for quality, however, I think it is a tad outrageous to charge customers $12 for two eggs on toast or $23 for smashed avocado which came with two eggs. Getting over the initial shock, we queued up to order. It was the longest wait for the amount of people in the line. Not sure why the staff taking the orders was so slow. It became apparent that a second staff was needed. Food came intermittently, which is understandable as we didn't order together. Having said that, one of the ladies who ordered first had to wait till everyone received their food before hers came. Hangry would aptly described her emotions. The food was delicious! I had the croque monsieur. Never heard of it before, I took a gamble and was pleasantly surprised. Other dishes included a little of a lot, smashed avocado, mushrooms on toast and the Frederick special. Really glad we stopped here for brunch. It is definitely popular. Well, luckily we decided to drive the extra 17km to Birdwood because Pomegranate Cottage is a truly lovely place! They have a very cute outside garden, with a fountain and surrounded by lots of trees and flowers so on a sunny day it's probably the best place you can find in Birdwood for lunch. (Mind you the choice isn't that big either) Great setting, friendly service and a good selection of food, ranging from pies to salads, fish to meat and some sandwiches. I had the beef pie for $14, which came with a small salad (no dressing though) and fries. You could tell the pie was homemade and not coming from a freezer. Very tasty and in terms of size I think the dishes are alright for the prices they charge. One thing that bothered me very much though is that the waitress came clearing the plates of the 3 people that were with me while I was still eating. That's an absolute no-go and would be a reason for me not to go back. However, the food was very good so I still recommend the place.

I often ride my bike down here from Glenelg and the ride is fabulous topped off by stopping for coffee at Joe's what could be better! Joe's is definitely an institution in Henley Beach, frequented by local celebrities and politicians having a quiet time out. Joe is a celebrity himself, everyone knows him and he certainly knows all the regulars. He loves to have a chat and put little Baci chocolates on the ladies coffees and gives out the odd chuppa chupp to the kid's of the regulars. Joe's daughter, Bianca, is delightful also and usually working in the cafe keeping Joe on track. The coffee is delicious and if you are into toasted sandwiches, his are the best I have ever tasted. The location is heaven, the beach here is pristine and, in summer there is a constant stream of people walking up the steps to order some refreshments. If you are looking for a place to have a coffee while the kids play safely on the beach this is as good as it gets. I love sitting at the outdoor tables soaking up the sun and atmosphere of the cafe and the beautiful surrounds. Word to the wise, in winter if the weather is bad Joe's is often closed as there is no indoor seating. Heaven on the beach.

We originally visited here as part of the Rendezvous markets, but that has unfortunately now closed. The upside is that Crossant D'Or Bakery has now decided to open every Saturday, which is great if you're looking for cheap pastries and coffee ;) My favourite is the almond croissant - full size for only $1!! That is not a typo - it's really $1. We also love the tray of 12 mini croissants (6 almond and 6 chocolate) for only $6, and a bonus is the good coffee (not sure if they stock soy milk - I had a very good long black). Croissant D'Or supplies cafes and the Central Markets, so is not really set up to be a stand-alone cafe - this is why the produce is so cheap, and why the seating is a bit daggy. It's a shame the Rendezvous Markets weren't sustainable, but I think this is because they concentrated more on the produce itself rather than the ambience ... and although this sounds shallow, ambience is a very important in making these sorts of markets popular. All in all, I think we will be frequenting Croissant D'Or quite regularly ... good for my wallet, but not necessarily for my waistline ;)

Then…read moreagain, Croissant D'Or Bakery is more of a 'working bakery' than high-end patisserie cafe, with the majority of their product ending up at local eating establishments. And probably being sold on for some considerable mark-up. This is one of these hidden jewels of the south, where you can grab a delectably flaky almond pastry and creamy latte for a fraction of what it will cost you at one of your more fancy establishments. It's worth seeking out this place early on a Saturday morning if only to grab a $6 tray chock full of croissant-y goodies; plain, chocolate and almond. And of course, you need to get one to eat then and there as well! The only downfall of this place (besides it's slightly difficult to get to location), is the general atmos. As I mentioned before, this is a working bakery set on an industrial estate. There are seats outside, but they are few and far between. The view is of the surrounding warehouses, with some old cracked cement pots with a few token plants for greenery. The music is also of some questionable taste at time - you'll have a few charming Parisian cafe tunes, but then mysteriously Zamfir will suddenly bust some panpipe moves. You can't help but think that with a little more careful planning, some more care taken with the outside decor and keeping up with the oh-so-French-chic musique that this bakery could become a real trendy hit with the Southerners. However, until then, I will continue to go for the amazing pastries, great coffee and friendly service. It's worth the trip through the sea of industry, for the best croissants in town. (Probably the same one you've just bout for triple the price at your local cafe!)
