Now, there are a few things about the business that bother me (mostly that they are only open for part of the week. So, if you want donuts on Thursday morning, you're in luck. If you want one Monday morning, you need to wait until Thursday morning. That silliness aside, the donuts are worth waiting for. The flavor combinations range from simple and tradition to more fancy, but the point is, there is no bad choice in the shop. Even the little donut holes are great. The shop is not near to the CBD, so you probably near a car to get to it, but believe me, it is more than worth your time to go a bit out of the way for these beauties.

The Boston Bakery (for which I have no idea why it is named after a city in the States!), is quite unassuming and from the outside isn't very distinguishable from any other old school bakery. Except that first of all the family that run it are the loveliest people and if you're lucky their little super adorable daughter will run the EFTPOS machine for your purchase. They also cherish their regulars; for example my partner used to be a regular and then moved overseas for 3 years and they still remembered her after all that time! And then there's the pies, oh sweet sweet delicious heaven-sent morsels of delight! They have the standard fare which drive a hard bargain at $3.60, but then they also have 'fancy' pies for $4.20 which include rockstar gems like Steak, Mushroom, Bacon and Cheese, or Chicken, Camembert and Cranberry, or Steak and Kumara, or Butter Chicken and Broccoli. My personal favs are the first 2 aforementioned pies and I really have to discipline myself as I have to walk past the Boston Bakery twice a day, 5 days a week. If you are in Mt Albert and need to fill the gap, swoop up one of these hand-made with love treats.

The food is good, on the whole. It might seem 'common' of me to be discussing the quality of bakery food on a forum where most reviews are of Customs St restaurants; but a junk-food aficionado appreciates that simple items like pies or even cream buns can vary hugely in quality. Their pies are not the best I've had, the pastry isn't flaky and delicate as you'd ideally want, and the filling can be a bit 'gelatinous'. But I very much enjoy their pepper-steak pie, and also their seafood pie -- the latter especially is an item that can turn out very good or very bad, depending on the establishment. The one at Baker's Dozen is very flavoursome, the filling is of a similar consistency to say a steak and cheese pie rather than the mushy, almost styrofoamy filling I've experienced on occasion [and I've done my research :)]. They also do a fantastic ham and mayo square type thing, it's got a signature flavour to it that I can't quite place, a hint of sweetness... yum. I'm also a stickler for their coffee cream donuts, delightful. I must say I've had awful service there in the past from the owner, and I can't omit a mention of it because it left me with a very unpleasant feeling. Lately though whenever I've visited Baker's Dozen I've been served by people other than him, and they're all friendly enough if not effervescing with joy at my custom -- though perhaps that's because they know as soon as I walk in the door that they're about to sell out of coffee cream donuts :D

Sally lunns, lamingtons and fresh rustic bread, all made by hand on site and in view of the customer. The food at Tart is cute Kiwiana with no pretentiousness - everything is hearty, tasty and oh so bad for the waistline. I also go to Tart for the atmosphere - there is a real family feel to this bakery, epitomised in the young man who served me when I first went in. Chatty, exuberant and extremely intelligent, this young fella told me all about how the bakery came to be, before gesturing to the piano outside and welcoming me to play it. When I told him I couldn't even play "Chopsticks" to save my life, he made a break for the piano and played the neighbourhood a song. AMAZING.
