Leon and Una were excellent hosts. We were greeted in the driveway and were able to walk around a bit before the other people showed up. Una gave us a ton of cool information about the farm, the types of plants, history of the island, native plant qualities, and so on. The whole tour and tasting took ~2 hours, but I could see it going longer or shorter depending on the number of people visiting and the number of questions about the farm. Normal tours are usually 14-16 people total. Our kids (ages 10 and 11) loved the tour. There were two other 9 year olds and a couple other older kids on the tour, and they all had a good time. I could definitely see some kids being a bit bored by the end, but I think the history they learn here will stick with them, so maybe some boredom isn't too bad :) We ended by sitting on the lanai and having a tasting of chocolates, some fruit, and coffee-- all of which were amazing. You have the chance to purchase these before leaving, and be sure to do that because you can't buy any of these anywhere else, even online. By the end of the tour, we felt like Una and Leon were part of our family. I highly recommend this tour, if only because it's local and not tied to any larger farms or corporations. You can ask as many questions as you like, and maybe by the end you'll feel like family too :) Pro tips: - The mosquitoes are no joke, at least near the parking lot (they seemed fine everywhere else). Be sure to wear long pants (it's cooler up that side of the mountain) and apply the mosquito spray that Leon provides when you arrive! - Give yourself an extra 15 minutes to find the farm. Google Maps will send you to the wrong place, but Apple Maps seemed to do well. Either way, follow the directions sent by Leon and Una and you'll be fine. - The road up to the farm is janky, but totally doable with 2-wheel drive. Just take your time. read more

We did the 2hr farm tour & tasting. They took us around their gardens & talked about the different trees & plants; they explained how they make their coffee, chocolates & macadamia nuts. We also got to try sugarcane & tangerines from their trees. It was a little long & slow paced for our kids (age 12 & 16), would not recommend for children. But their coffee, chocolates & macadamia nuts were delicious, you can tell everything was organic, fresh & made with care. You can only purchase their products in-person after the tour, they do not sell online. They say not to use Google maps but we were able to use it and get to their property without getting lost. We had a fun trip visiting the farm! If you wonder while driving if you are going to the right place, you are not alone! They will send you a map-use it! It rained while we drove up so we were unsure what would happen, but it stopped quickly and we would have done the tour rain or shine! The tour is run by the family and you are truly welcomed into their home! They explained everything they grew and let you sample many items. They were attentive, knowledgeable, and do kind! We did buy several products (only sold after the tour) and each tastes like it was individually produced. This is their business and passion. Two hours can feel a bit long, but you feel like you were welcomed into their home for a gathering and their love is in everything they do. read more

This farm is an epic, must-visit travel destination for anyone staying in the Kona area (worth a trip even if you are elsewhere on the big island!). The tour was one of the most engaging, well-paced, and informative tours I have ever been on in my life. The owners of the farm were the ones who led the tour out of their own home. They literally treat you like family and once you meet them you immediately feel like you are part of theirs. They have so much stuff in terms of crops of ALL kinds - coffee of course, but also things like taro, bananas, macadamias, cocoa, and so many more that I can't even list them all off the top of my head. They took us through the entire farm and explained the science behind the way each crop grows, what they need to thrive, and how they impact each other and the environment. Not only that, but they also provided detailed backstory on the history of the island, its indigenous and early settlers from around the world, and how they used the crops throughout the years. I learned so much more than just how and where coffee grows. We not only saw plants, but also saw a ton of wildlife which was a pleasant surprise! There were so many cute geckos running around, there's a sweet and hilarious kitty who lives on the farm and supervised the entire visit, and we saw many wild critters such as wild chickens and a crazy-looking, neon, triple-horned chameleon walking around his land. The owners truly treat the land like it belongs to the plants, animals, and island rather than themselves or any other humans. Their love for the environment was refreshing, and it was amazing learning about their lives on the farm. I believe they have been there for 5 or so decades, so they surely know what they are doing, and it shows. There is also a really fun tasting at the end where you and the rest of the group (it was a small group which meant that we all got to be comfortable with one another during the tour) tried things from the farm. We tried raw cacao fruit, coffee freshly brewed from their plants, broke our own macadamia nuts to try, and ate tangerines and bananas. The tour concluded with the opportunity to purchase any items from a small batch of merchandise they sell, which is both fairly priced and unique due to the fact that they do not sell online and only sell to those who tour. We got to chat with the guides before leaving and they were just too sweet for this tour. I will certainly be attending again when we visit in the future to support them and also to experience such a great time once more. read more

Make an appointment. They are very sweet people. They have a 5 acres farm. I called last minute and made an appointment. I they gave us samples of macadamia nuts which were yummy (I bought some). The coca beans were bitter and actually I bought those too because I know my dad would like them. We bought their handmade chocolate bars 2. I would have bought more but the bars are 8.00 each and I've already spent a lot. I didn't buy any coffee because I already bought a lot elsewhere. When I come back next time I will buy some. Anyways this place is worth coming to and supporting. read more

This farm tour was everything we were hoping for and more! Coffee, chocolate and a vast array of fruits. Una was very welcoming and informative. Since they have been operating the farm for several decades, she's full of helpful and unique farming and local island info. We have never seen so many different types of plants and vegetation. We were able to try several fruits we'd never heard of. The picnic on the lanai at the end of the tour was wonderful. Their old style medium roast coffee, amazingly delicious. Their jams and chutneys, fantastic. 70% chocolate, heaven. I was infatuated with the avocado as big as my head though...smooth, creamy and incredible. Una even shared her avocado ice cream with us! If you want an authentic Hawaiian farm experience, free from commercialization and pesticides, come visit Kuaiwi Farm! It's the best $15 you'll spend on your trip. It was a delightful experience spending our day with Una, learning about growing coffee beans, cacao and tasting fruits right off the trees. She made us sit by her porch and poured us a hot cup of coffee with home made chocolates, home grown bananas and banana crisps on the side. Truly wonderful. Kona Old Style Coffee at Kuaiwai Farm is an amazing organic experience. My husband and I enjoyed a relaxing afternoon with Una and her husband Leon. We spent about 3 hours touring the farm, trying new fruits and fresh nuts, tasting homemade jams and drinking their award winning coffee. I loved walking through her farm and seeing all the variety of crops. Una and her husband were amazing hosts,my husband and I felt very welcomed in their home. On our recent trip to the Big Island, I wanted to go on a real coffee farm tour, not one that basically consisted of drinking samples of some Kona blend in a cheesy gift shop. Thanks to Google and Yelp, I found Kuaiwi Farm. While Una's tours aren't free, they are well worth what you pay given what you get to see and learn about coffee, the various other fruits and vegetables she grows, and organic farming in general. As others have noted, you end the farm sitting on her deck talking story and sampling her products. I tried the dark roast, which had just come back from the roaster that morning, and it was absolutely amazing. I normally use milk in my coffee but actually preferred this black, it was so smooth. I'd love to go back and take a chocolate class some day! But for now, I'm just going to enjoy the coffee I bought from Una, and the memories of our tour. read more

Very interesting tour where we sampled all sorts of fruits, cacao, and coffee picked fresh as we walked through her property. Just fantastic. Una and Leon were gracious, accommodating and interesting hosts. Their farm is luscious and beautiful. I took a party (all family) of 14 and we loved it. Following a hand-drawn map they emailed us, we drove through the forest to the farm. There, we were warmly greeted. Una is so knowledgeable and has so much pride in her farm that she as nurtured for over 40 years. She knows every plant, tree, and bush on the place. She took us on a tour through this special place, while we handled, examined and discussed coffee, chocolate, nuts, pineapple, banana, passion fruit, dragon fruit, taro, and so much more. She shared historical tidbits and farm knowledge. We got a real insight into a working Hawaiian farm. Then we hung out on their gorgeous lanai with views looking down to the ocean. We were served samples of apple-banana, white pineapple, dried pineapple, coco-nibs, chocolate, macadamia nut, etc. -- all grown and prepared on the farm . . . yards from where we sat. It was the opposite of some sterile commercial tour. It was private, intimate, fun and there is nothing like the farmers, themselves, walking you and around and sharing their lives with you. What can I say? My family loved this. I highly, highly recommend this very any family or group who wants a wonderful little escape. read more

Kuaiwi Farm is more than just a coffee farm tour. The owner of the farm personally takes you around and tells you about all of the wonderful fruits and veggies grown on the farm, which includes coffee and tea, as well as other island favorites like passion fruit and macadamia nuts. There are many other exotic things grown on the farm, including cacao, rangpur limes, apple bananas, pineapple guavas, and figs. All of these fruits floored me with their deliciousness. The chocolate was the most unique I have ever eaten in my life. On the tour, you'll get a chance to taste fresh, organically grown fruits right off of the tree. The owner even sent me home with a generous bag of some of her farm's offerings. It really doesn't get any better than this. This is a tour for people who appreciate high quality, sustainably grown produce, and who are willing to take some time to experience these pleasures in a very relaxed, informal (read: non-industrial) way. The tour is completely informal, and every visit will yield a different experience. The owner is very friendly and loves to get to know all of her visitors. Awesome hospitality, you go down the little half grown over, bumpy but really fun it felt like an adventure, Una and Leon we're welcoming and extremely knowledgeable. Got our two young kids involved so much let them crack macadamia nuts and pick certain fruits on their property. Fed their neighbors cows, they cut down bananas from their plant and got to go on their lanai and taste the delicious coffee. We did try the coco nibs from the chocolate pod that she whacked open and it looked white encased in a membrane that looked weird but we tried it and it was delicious! This tour is a must do!! Eye opening experience, getting a personal tour of dozens of types of trees and bushes bearing fruits and vegetables -- a veritable garden of Eden! Una and her husband Leon are very friendly, opening their home to visitors, offering samples of the various coffee and exotic jams they sell. Make sure to bring mosquito repellant for the walk around the grounds, and call ahead to see what sorts of fruits and home made chocolate (they go from fresh beans to finished product) are available for sampling and purchase. We arrived at Kuaiwi Farm to meet a friend from many years ago. We found a Garden of Eden with fruits and vegetables only a wild imagination could dream of. If you're reading this review, you probably are interested in experiencing a part of Hawaii that is authentic and meaningful--you appreciate and value the history/integrity of Kona coffee and the exotic fruits and vegetables that Hawaiin climate enables to thrive--or at least you want to know more about it. Having helped out at Kuaiwi farm for two months, I can say with honesty that there wasn't a day that went by that I wasn't impressed by the work that Una and Leon (and her helpers ;)) put in to making their farm authentic and meaningful. With care and compassion regarding the integrity of the Hawaiian culture, land, and the various plants and trees growing on the farm, Kuaiwi farm reflects the essence of purity that is diminishing on farms throughout the Big Island. And you can really taste the difference in the food! In addition to pleasing your moral sense, you will also be able to please your sense of appetite at Kuaiwi by tasting the delicious fruits, chocolate, mac-nuts, and coffee that Una and Leon are eager to share. Just had the most incredible 2.5 hr farm tour with 3 very knowledgable organic farm interns at the farm! It is so nice to see a real, working, organic farm that produces small quantities of high quality consumables. Everything is hand made with love, and since it is a smaller operation they will take the time to really show you everything from prick to process. Our tour was private, and we learned so much! Thank you all for spending the afternoon sharing your knowledge with us! We will be back! P.s. If you are between this tour and a larger coffee tour, take it from a girl that did both. This is hands down the way to go! You will see the whole coffee production and distribution process, and so much more. On top of it, you get an up close and personal view, rather then watching big machines churn away from yards away. Also, look into the honey bee farm up the road. This came highly recommended by our friends who own restaurants on the mainland. My wife and I were glad we took the time to do this tour as the experience was very unique! Even driving into the farm was something most tourists would not see as it was well into the country side on a one lane road, but our van was able to traverse it easily. The main reason why we chose this as it has both chocolate and coffee on the same tour. As we continued with the tour it become much more than that! Una and Leon were very welcoming to their farm and even their living spaces. As we set off we were able to learn about their farm and coffee history, crack open macadamia nuts (and eat them), see them in the trees, pick out some coffee beans and see the process it takes to make it into a cup. We also saw chocolate and that process, along with the various fruits and vegetables scattered around the farm. Una was always picking them off the stems and cutting them up for us to have a taste. Our favorite was the tree tomato, having a slight hint of mint! Yum. Walking around the farm was not tiresome or overbearing at all. There are also wonderful flowers to be seen native to the land. The tour concluded over hot fresh Kona coffee via press on the owner's lanai with some of their chocolates, fresh and dried bananas, plus great conversations! Even some geckos came out onto the table to see what was going on. We were able to purchase some coffee beans and chocolate to share with our family back home and they happily took credit card too. Overall it was a very personal experience with a small group (we were a total of 8 guests and a 2-year old), allowing Una and Leon to have more attention to their visitors and their crops. Una Greenway leads a spirited and knowledgable tour of her five acre organic farm. My husband, son and I had a chance to see Una pick fruits and vegetables from the trees and vines, cut them open and serve them to everyone right on the spot. We tasted MANY amazing and exotic fruits and I had a chance to actually see how asparagus grows. We loved Una's stories and what she and her husband have created on the farm. Truly an experience to have if you come to the Big Island. TIP: Wear jeans and long sleeves for the mosquitos that are around parts of the farm. Una and Leon are wonderful people and very hospitable. They welcomed us into their home an gave us an experience like no other. Firstly we sampled coffee, jellies and butter which were grown, and made right there. We made chocolates which was amazing, so smooth, silky and oh so delicious. When we were done sampling the chocolate, we set out on the tour of the farm. We were drawn there because it was organic and because of the unique experience that was offered. We were not disappointed. Una was so very informative, and we sampled many fruits, some we were familiar with and others that were new. If you want to do something different and have a wonderful experience like no other, go and see Una and Leon on the Kuaiwi Farm! We would visit again when we return next time! read more

One of the best experiences I had on the island. The proprietors welcome you into their home and give you a personalized tour of their beautiful family farm. As you walk the property with Una, you learn about the different plants they grow and how they run the farm in a sustainable and organic way. Throughout the tour, you get to taste a variety of different items including mac nuts, mountain apples, apple bananas, cinnamon tree leaves, and of course coffee and cacao. At the conclusion of the tour, you are welcomed onto the lanai like old friends for additional treats and a coffee and chocolate tasting. The farm is a little off the main highway, down some beautiful, one lane roads, but easily accessible if you follow Una's hand-drawn map. Do NOT use your GPS or internet directions as some of our fellow tour members did or you may will end up lost and trespassing on someone else's property. Well worth the trip. We went on a cacao farm tour and chocolate class at Kuaiwi farm and it was incredible in every respect! From the gorgeous plants the owner Una grows all organically, cacao to coffee, the way she processes them all into delicious coffee, chocolate and jams, and the fun chocolate making class where we learned to make chocolate from the fresh pod all the way to the finished melting chocolate bar, it was non-stop delight. Una is very gracious and an excellent teacher, and sending you home with a DVD of the chocolate making process means that you can focus on how tasty the chocolate is, not need to take notes, and make it again when you get home even if you live on the mainland! I'd highly recommend their tours to anyone who's near Captain Cook & Kona! read more

If you drink coffee, this is a must visit! This is not your average coffee plantation, mass coffee production tour. It felt more like visiting an aunt or friend's house ..and they happened to be located on this lovely organic coffee farm. Una is warm, friendly and ready to share her passion for coffee with you. We also got to taste some fruits grown on the farm - tree tomato was delicious...Kona lime was a hoot - looks like an orange, but 100% lime all the way. This farm is simply amazing! We learned everything we needed to know about picking coffee and how it is made. We went to the actual tree, picked the coffee from the tree, got the beans from the skin and learned how to dry them. Them we learned about picking cocoa and macadamia nuts and a whole host of other fruits on the 5 acre farm. We even fed the cow! It was a real hands on tour. Uma was an amazing host. We tasted everything as we went along. She evens made us coffee. Soooo much better then the corporate coffee tours. read more

I visited Kuaiwi farm because of a coworker's recommendation. This turned out to be one of the highlights of my trip to Hawaii. The walking tour of a working organic coffee farm started with a view of 100 year old coffee trees planted by the original owner. Una was a wealth of knowledge for all of the plants and processes on the farm. She was amazing with her generosity of showing how each part of the plants - from organic composting to harvesting fruits - fit in. She has a deep connection and love of the land. I had this crazy idea that a farm tour would be a fantastic experience for my family (including 4 kids). I was SO right! Una is sweet knowledgeable and such a gracious hostess. We spent a couple of hours soaking up the beauty of her farm and sampling the many different things grown on her farm: coffee, mountain apples, lychees, apple bananas, oranges, avocados... The list goes on and on. It was one of the highlights of our entire trip - and my children, who loved the fruit as much as the geckos spotted everywhere, came home and were over the moon when they found their favorite Hawaii treat at the grocery store: lychees ("like on the farm, Mom!"). We planned a trip to the Big Island and found Kuaiwi Farm on Yelp. Una was flexible on our arrival for the tour since we wanted to hike to the Green Sand beach in the morning. We were amazed with the farm, not only the coffee and cacao, but all the fruits and vegetable growing and picking off tangerines and berries to eat during the tour. We learned a lot. At the end of the tour we enjoyed coffee, tasted chocolate and jam on the back porch during a passing rain storm. We purchased some coffee and raw macadamia nuts to take home. Last week I attended a chocolate workshop and went to Kuaiwi Farms for the morning portion of the program. It was enchanting. This is a true organic farm that is in balance with nature and is full of love and good enery. Just driving up the road to get there was a beautiful treat. I live here and I loved it. I think just going to the farm would be a great experience for anyone visiting our island. They have coffee, cacoa, tea, oranges, vegetables, lemon and limes and so much more. Una is gracious and so down to earth. I felt like I had known her all my life. She even had all of us in her kitchen to try some of her jams and coffee. What a great day I had. read more

If you are going anywhere near Captain Cook, don't miss this experience. The beautiful and remote farm that Una and Leon have created is a one-stop shop to see amazing Hawaiian grown produce in development on a farm. I cannot begin to list all the many plants and natural products you will see. I took my husband, two young girls and my 80 year old mom. There was something for everyone. The groves can be hilly and a bit uneven so wear good walking shoes and go slow. At one point my mom slipped, without injury, and Una graciously set her up on her deck with a gorgeous view and yummy goodies to eat and drink. Leon stayed with her sharing the history and stories of their farm while we continued the tour. Such friendly hosts! We left with a giant box of produce, nuts, jelly and t-shirts. So much more than just a coffee farm tour! I highly recommend a visit to this farm to see not only how coffee is grown and processed but to also view and taste some of the best produce on Hawaii. Una was incredibly generous with her time and with letting us sample the bounty of her farm.
