Well preserved and run by a friendly staff with Joan Salvas (local historian and a great tour guide). They are planning a series of jazz concerts thru the spring, which should be interesting. The venue is also open for private parties and as a wedding venue.

The landscape of the grounds were also designed by the Olmsted Brothers who became famous for designing/landscaping many of today's national parks. The Rutherfurd family lived here as early as the mid-eighteenth century, and over their families time here hosted many famous titans of industry and even future American presidents. There's a really fun/interesting story about FDR and Alice Morton. Later, Rutherfurd Hall was donated to the church and used as a type of retirement home for the nuns. Rutherfurd Hall is now owned by the Allamuchy School District who does a great job utilizing it to maintain this beautiful structure. If you go on a Wednesday, you'll be able to receive a tour through the beautiful home. Their tour guides are absolutely fantastic and know so much of the history so thoroughly it is really impressive. Rutherfurd Hall does weddings on it's own, but a local venue David's Country Inn also holds wedding ceremonies on the grounds. I'll be having my ceremony at Rutherfurd Hall and could not be more excited!

Unfortunately, our visit to Snug Harbor was a bit disappointing. We arrived via the Staten Ferry…read morefrom Manhatten and walked the long haul to the Harbor. The park was very quiet- not a whole lot of activity. It seemed at one point, it was a place bustling with energy. The Contemporary museum was closed and appeared empty inside. The Secret garden was non existent- the entrance was boarded up and the building stored chairs etc. When I think of a healing garden- what comes to mind are water features and rock gardens. This healing garden consisted of trails through large open green spaces. No water features. Throughout the park, most , not all, green areas were maintained. Things could be cleaned up among some of the gardens and weeded. Kinda sad.. The info booth and restaurant was open. Don't think we'll return...

I really was so warmly welcomed here and they were eager to help answer any questions and just engage with some of the key points. So many charming things used to learn today. From mastodons of which you can enjoy seeing a 10-foot-tall mastodon sculpture : a woolly mammoth-looking creature which once roamed the hills of Staten Island in prehistoric days. Learn about the industries that thrived in this area for example, their chewing gum factory, the terra-cotta factory & ceramic factory. Such wonderful things created for people to enjoy, however, the Freshkills area and then to see all the years and years worth of efforts made to clean up the area and make it safe and beautiful and a wonderful habitat once again. It was nice to see that it's treated as a beautiful treasure. Grateful to the women who lead the groups that were very persistent in this endeavor. I loved seeing the erasure poetry activity.. where are we made poetry by blocking out the letters that were the writings of the museum's kind founder William T. Davis. Reconstructing his writing.. it's a wonderful little game that takes you slowly into his thoughts and his love and reflections of his town. I'm happy to learn about the founder of this museum and how he took care of all the sailors by constructing these buildings and giving them a home after a lifetime of working hard on the ships Very thankful for all the hard-working people that keep this wonderful story alive and in the minds of everyone lucky enough to venture this way.
