Came in for a estimate, which they do for free, and they told me what was wrong with it, and gave me my total. The cost was reasonable and included a cleaning, so there was no complaining about that. Just got my camera back today, and it's working smoothly. It took two weeks, but I wasn't in a rush, so I didn't mind the waiting. Service here is amazing! Didn't get any of their names, but I was helped by a younger female when I first came in, and I was helped by an older blonde lady when I came to pick up, both of which were extremely friendly. Let me just start by saying WOW!.... Everyone here was super friendly and helpful. I came here in an emergency to fix my old Nikon N80. The back door has been broken for a long time and I had been taping it shut (ghetto, I know) and it seemed to work for awhile.. til recently. It finally stopped being tricked by my taping the door shut trick.. So I had a photography project due for school on Tuesday, and I came in to Kurt's Camera Repair on Friday, worried I wouldn't get it fixed in time.. Well they were SO nice and friendly and after hearing how I needed my camera fixed ASAP they were willing to jump right on it. It was an easy fix of taking the back door from another camera and putting it on mine. They quoted me '30 minutes' !!! How rad is that?! Plus it was around $70 for labor and parts, not too bad in my book :) Everyone who worked here was over the top nice and you could tell they loved people and their jobs. I also watched them as they helped other customers and the other customers all seemed to be pleased as well. One customer and I were talking and she mentioned nothing but good things about this place as well and said she had been coming there for years! While looking through a viewfinder and not watching where I was walking, I took a pretty bad fall when I ran into an unknown step on my brother's front walkway. It landed my Nikon D90 camera (and almost myself) in the hospital - namely Kurt's Camera Repair. My main concern was the kit lens (18-105mm) that literally separated itself from the camera body as we went crashing down on the cement together. When I picked it up off the ground, the parts inside rattled like a pair of maracas! I also had a camera bag on my shoulder that contained another lens and an external flash that I was worried might have been damaged. Luckily I had everything insured (thanks, USAA!) - I just had to submit a repair estimate from a local camera repair shop. I only knew of Nelson's in Little Italy, but saw on their website that they send out repairs to Kurt's so I figured why deal with a middleman and a shipping fee and went straight to Kurt's. I was greeted by Vanessa, who was very reassuring that my camera's injuries were not life-threatening. She took all the pieces I had, giving me back accessories such as filters, memory cards, etc. that she said they would not need. She confirmed the inventory of items she accounted for and advised they'd email a quote to me. I dropped the camera off at their shop on 12/29/12 and even with the holidays I had a quote back already by 1/4/13. They said they'd be able to fix the camera body at their shop, but the kit lens would have to take a trip to the Nikon factory. The good news was the items in my camera bag were not hurt in the accident. Unfortunately it took a month for USAA to approve the estimate, but as soon as they did - Vanessa passed on the equipment to her technicians to get the repair work started. The camera body repair from Kurt's took about 3 weeks, but the lens repair took longer since it had to go to the Nikon factory. I just picked everything up on 3/16/13 and although I haven't taken the camera out for a full day of shooting, I shot a few pictures around the house and it appears things are working as they were before - just with a new filter thread on the end of my kit lens and the zoom seems a tad bit tighter to slide. I can't wait to to put it to the full test this weekend when I head down to Balboa Park. Vanessa thought the final price would end up being about $10 less than the original estimate, but instead it ended up being over by $10. I wasn't upset, just more curious as to how it turned out differently than expected. I think the Nikon factory charged more than originally anticipated. Vanessa said she would gladly refund the difference or send me a gift certificate for a sensor cleaning - I didn't expect either, but really appreciated her response to my inquiry of how the difference occurred and took her up on the offer for a sensor cleaning. I really felt like everyone at Kurt's Camera Repair knew their stuff, were very professional and extremely courteous, which you just don't find in a lot of businesses today. My Nikon and its accessories were a big investment for me and I always felt like they were in good hands at Kurt's. Vanessa was great about staying in contact with me via email or phone, not rushing me when my insurance was taking so long to approve the estimate and keeping me in the loop on the status of the repair work. I've got a medium line digital camera - a Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS1. over the years, i ended up with some dust in the lenses and on the contact. I love this camera and don't feel the need to retire it. Went to Nelson's Photo in Little Italy and they sent me to Kurt's. Brought it in, and explained that while i didn't need it super fast, i did need it faster than the current wait time (and explained why) Camera came back nice and clean with no specks, even sooner than i expected, and I was able to have better pics for my trip! I took my Nikon D300 in to get cleaned again. Meanwhile this camera body has over 60,000 shots on the clock and like I wrote before I get a lot of dirt and dust in the mirror box and sensor because I frequently change lenses. I brought the camera in yesterday at lunch time and had it back within 24 hours. The work is excellent and the price of $63 was fair as they cleaned the whole camera body inside and out. My only suggestion to improve service would be to write on the customer receipt exactly what was done to the camera, something they did on the work ticket, but i did not get a copy of that. Otherwise this remains my top choice for camera cleaning in San Diego. Hopefully I will never have to use them for their repair service. read more

Dropped off my SLR for a malfunctioning dial and received a call a few days later giving me an estimate on the repair. I approved the estimate and was told it should be ready in a few days which was welcome news as I use this camera for work. over a week later I still have heard nothing and when I call the girl that answers the phone is talking to a technician next to her (I assume) and says, "he'll start on it now and it should be ready by Monday(5 more days from now) or sometime next week". I explained to her that I need this camera for work and that I was told when I approved the estimate it would be done in a few days and she explained to me that, "something came up, and I'll do my best to expedite the repair". It appears to me that my repair was overlooked and no work was done until I called. I see a lot of good reviews for this shop so I assume this is not the norm but be sure to stay on top of them if you leave your camera for repair if you need it back soon. read more

Amazing and HONEST. I wish there where more stars. My camera went into them on the 14th of August and I received it on my door the 11th of September. The part for my camera was back ordered they called me to inform me that it likely would take until the 21st. Did it make me anxious not having my camera a period of time oh absolutely BUT Kurt's made the process painless. There where a few bugs with little things like emails etc but honestly that is just technology being technology. I would recommend them to anyone. But just remember as amazing as they are you always have to be prepared for the worst which wouldn't be their fault they just have to pass the news along. LONG STORY LONG I am SOOO glad I didn't let negative reviews stop me from sending my camera to Kurt's the service was top notch and I am so grateful to have my camera back better than when I sent it to them! I bought a Canon point and shoot for my grandma who proceded to drop it in a concrete parking structure. The lens wouldn't retract and basically it was donezo. Figuring why not see if someone can repair I took it here. Took about a week to fix, charged me $80 bucks, but the camera was as good as new. Pros 1. Staff knows about cameras and parts. If they can fix it, they will fix it. Cons 1. Do you really want to pay 1/2 the price of your camera to fix it? The canon I bought was $300 but if I bought it used on CLIST ( I checked) it would be about $125... so only 40 bucks more than a repair. 2. It takes awhile to get it done and it gets busy. The times I was their the wait was long.... 3. Location isn't exactly near a freeway. Takes awhile to haul ass down Mission Gorge Road... In the end it's a judgment call. I brought my Canon SD900 in to get fixed because the "toggle" button didn't work when I pressed on it. Why? When I was in Vegas, it was accidentatly dropped into a glass of alcohol - go figure. Luckily, after a month of not turning on at all.....it finally turned on, except that the toggle button wasn't working properly. I went to Kurt's Camera Repair on a Wednesday and then $65 and only ONE DAY LATER, my camera works perfectly!!! (Or as close to perfect with all the abuse I've done to it). Kurt's Camera Repair is just plain excellent! I took my older Canon 1ds MKII in for a shutter replacement, and they did a fantastic job - quickly and less expensive than Canon... Since the shutter was not able to be sourced directly from Canon anymore (Boo Canon!) they looked around and found a new, OEM shutter somewhere else and got it all taken care of for only slightly more than the estimate (Due to the cost of the shutter assembly). Plus, they were all very friendly and professional. Good job all! Keep up the excellent service. The woman at the front went through each one telling me which ones were event worth repairing or trashing. I asked if they could use the parts of recycle the junk cameras for me and she gladly took them. I had two cameras repaired and they work great now. Great experience here! I took my husband's fancy camera to get cleaned last week. We had been putting it off for awhile since the camera had sand in it from our honeymoon to Thailand. So fun to see the beach from the movie "The Beach" but not so great for the camera. I remember coming here about 8 years ago and talking to them about repairing my small point & shoot digital camera that was having issues with the lens coming fully open. They recommended that I just get a new camera as the repairs would be more than the camera was worth. In that case it is like car repair-- I appreciate when people give me the bottom line and aren't just trying to take my money. I called around and read the reviews for: 1) Pro Photo Repair on Raytheon. Based on the reviews I figured I'm already married so I get my daily dose of dealing with people that are Bi-Polar. That seems to be a common theme over there. 2) Kurtz Camera repair. Great reviews. Farther away for me. Same quoted repair price. Item was a Canon 430Ex flash with a broken foot. Kurtz fixed it in 20 minutes and actually came in $4.00 USD cheaper than quoted and done faster than estimated. They even heated up my lunch for me and gave me a fork so I could chow my lunch while dining "al-fresco" during the repair. Flash works great. Add me to the very, very happy customers. read more

I love my Canon Power Shot. I've literally taken it to the other side of the world and back again. But then it stopped working and I probably could have just replaced it since repairing a camera can often cost as much as a new one. However, I tend to get attached to my things and I also didn't want to have to replace the underwater housing. So...I took it to Kurt's for a repair estimate, expecting it to be $$$. I was delightfully surprised when they told me it was just the shutter that needed to be fixed, that it would be only $68, and would also include cleaning. Not only that, they even replaced the wrist strap. To me, this was above and beyond good customer service! The repairs were completed in exactly the time frame as quoted and so far it works great! I highly recommend this place! FYI, their turn around time for most repairs is 2 weeks, but you can get a 2-day rush for an additional $40. read more

Apparently this shop had a good reputation. I'm not sure what happened. Maybe they have too much business for their own good? I took in my Nikon D80 for service back in August 2007 after returning from a trip to Taiwan. My trusty D80's shutter broke during the trip unfortunately. I needed my D80 to be repaired in a reasonable time because I was taking an engagement shoot and 2 weddings in the next few months and really needed my camera. Kurt's took about 2 months to determine that they could not fix it, in which case they mailed it off to Nikon. To Kurt's credit, the Nikon D80 was less than a year old at the time and not that many D80's had been sent in for service with the problem that mine was exhibiting. With that said, Nikon had it repaired and returned in about a week. Thankfully all of this was covered in the Nikon 1 year warranty, otherwise I would have been even more perturbed. read more

Have had both my super old school cameras(vintage Hanimex Practika TL and AE-1 Program) and digital ones repaired here. The Hanimex had some major issues with the shutter and since it's ancient there are no longer any compatible parts, but Kurt was so stoked to see one in such good condition that he figured out some way to make it work without the replacement! I went with Kurt's camera repair because they were one of 2 shops in San Diego that does in house repair. I had a lense error on my camera and turned it into them for repair. The pricing is cheap, so maybe that's where I went wrong. 1st pickup - After we picked up our camera, we tried to use it the next day only to find we were still continuing to receive the lens error. Kurt's camera repair was nice enough to take the camera back and offer to repair it, with no additional charges. 2nd pickup - I took my camera out, used it the next day to find that my menu settings were all jacked up. Again back to the repair shop. This time they offered me a loaner so I could take pictures for Thanksgiving. 3rd pickup - I took my camera out, next day, and it's working...for about 2 hours, with a non-pre-existing delay in the shooting. And again, lens error. Seriously?! I've given them a star for continuously working on my camera for no additional costs and for loaning me a camera, but I am highly disappointed in their ability to repair a simple lens error. And not only that, but they've returned my camera more damaged than it was in the first place. Last but not least the gas it costs me to drive 30 miles roundtrip each time. So, 1 1/2 months later...taking it back for a 4th time...will keep you posted. read more

Brought my broken Canon EFS kit lens and was told that it needed a new autofocus motor. It took them a few days to get back to me to confirm that that was the problem and then they said it would take about a week to fix. Counting the days on the calendar I figured I would be able to get the lens back before I left for the holidays. Well, a week past and I didn't hear back from them so I decided to call back myself. They said that it was not ready yet and if they finished it within the next day I could come pick it up. Unfortunately, as it turns out it was not ready until after I had already left for holiday. To be fair, they did not give a firm date and I imagine it is very busy around the holidays, but I felt that they might have been better if they had just called me as soon as they know they wouldn't be able to get to my lens. I would have been ok with that. The staff is very nice and courteous, I had no problem with them whatsoever. The prices were fair and after using the lens I am happy with the repair. In short, they probably could be a little better in communicating their backlog or shortage of help but I would go back if I needed camera repair again. Not that I'm wishing damage to any of my equipment, but I suppose it's inevitable. read more

When I accidentally dropped my digital camera while the lens was open on the floor, I came to Yelp for help. I found Kurt's Repair! I took my camera there and they told me that they would need to disassemble the whole camera since the lens would no longer open. I couldn't take pictures either. I was told it would be ready in a week. I called in a week to see if it was ready but it wasn't. I was contacted a few days later. A woman advised that my camera was ready for pick up. Yayyy!!! My bill came to about $70ish. Regardless, I am happy as this is less than the cost of a new camera. I like the fact that Kurt's staff do not try to take advantage of you. They tell you that if the repair is more than the camera itself, you should not get it fixed unless it is a heirloom, gift, etc. I am a happy photographer again. read more

I have been to Kurts Camera Repair on 2 occasions. The first was to have a DSLR cleaned and inspected. Generally most of my equipment work is done by myself, but I wanted a full professional for this as it had been a couple of years. They took the camera, provided me a reasonable estimate and completion date. The camera was ready a day earlier than expected, and when I went to pick it up then they walked through everything that had been done and made certain that I was satisfied. The second time I stopped by with a long lens tripod mount ring whose adjustment screw inner capture point had come off of its mounting, and I didn't have a JIS screwdriver handy. The person at the counter took the ring and asked me if I could wait a few minutes. A few minutes later they returned with the fixed ring and would not accept any financial recompense for the work. Both times the people were friendly, efficient, and professional. Kurts has now become my go to camera repair location for any work that I don't do myself. Highly recommended! read more

Came into Kurt's Camera today after being referred to them by George's in North Park. I came in with my grandson and the first impression was just amazing. Other then just the "Hello" and welcome they asked me if they could offer my baby some candy. I brought my Pentax P3 camera in after I noticed that the door is no longer closing. I have not used this camera in about six years. The man who assisted me took it in the back and came back telling me the door was just a bit bent and he had already fixed it for me for free. WOW. Really? I was thinking I was going to be spending quite a bit of cash to have it fixed. I really did not expect that much less for him to do it for free. I purchased some batteries for the camera so the total cost other than gas was about $7.00 for two camera batteries. This place is really amazing. Update: I got my Canon 70-200 f2.8L back a week and a half later than expected due to their volume of repairs. I wasn't in a hurry to pick it up, but was definitely pleased that I got it back right before the 4th of July. I got around with playing with the newly calibrated lens and I must say that focus rings are a tighter than it was prior to sending it in. My focus ring were like ball bearings and now it has a tighter feel, but not like out of the box tight. More of a gently used lens tight. Anyways, the focus on the lens is super sharp. I almost feel like it's a new lens. The soft focus is completely gone and this is due to some internal lubrication of the lens. If you think about how much it cost to lube this lens, you'd almost die. However, the matter of the fact is you paid more than $2400 for this lens and for $2XX to lube and recalibrate your lens is not a bad deal, especially when Canon will do the same for $3XX +parts and shipping. Overall, I can't recommend these guys enough. Oh and they also gave me a 6mo warranty on their work. So if the lens happens to shift out of focus again, I'll be covered. read more

I am a new customer to Kurts and I plan to go back if I ever need any addition repair for my Cannon SD750. I am very satisfied with the work they performed on my camera. First of all, I didn't have to set up an appointment so I showed up during my lunch break & I got attended immediately. I handed them my camera & they took it to the back of their office & came back in less than 2 minutes with a fair estimate of $80 bucks to replace the broken LCD. They promised me 3 weeks to fix my camera due to the repairs already ahead of me & because they had to order the part, although they did write ASAP on the invoice. I called them back the following week just to make sure everything was okay & they actually told me that the part had came in that morning & my camera would be done that afternoon. I was THRILLED!! So i went to get my camera, paid exactly what they told me it was going to be & they gave me another estimate to replace the screen of the LCD & they will only charge me parts which is $30 bucks and no labor charge since i already paid labor! Greatest repair service i could ever ask for. The people were all eager and will to help. The service was fast and cheap compared to other places. I went in for a sensor cleaning because there was spots through my viewfinder and on my pictures. I got it back the next day...spots are off my pictures, but the spots through viewfinder were still there. They took one look at 10seconds later told me it was my focusing lens was snugged or chipped. The didnt charge me for the service only charged me for the cost of that part because i did the sensor cleaning already. Camera is good as new! Would recommend and return any time read more
