He filled me in on what could be done and what couldn't be done, and was up front about parts that were no longer available. He said he would fix my dryer and now it works like brand new! He fixed it and saved me over $400.00 for a new one, and now my dryer works like a new one. Freezer stopped freezing food, ice was melting and fridge wasn't very cold. I called a number associated with another company after trying the local retail applicance stores without being able to get a technician. I didn't realize I had reached Kurtz. I wouldn't have hired him if I had known and read reviews. Jacob came over the day I called. Might have raised a concern. He came in and immediately started taking apart the freezer without doing any diagnostic work. Replaced the fan and charged us over $400, but this had no effect on the problem. Do not even consider calling this man for service. He came as scheduled, only to charge me almost $300, and did NOTHING to the appliance. He left saying he would get the parts needed to make the repair. That was three weeks ago. I had two appointments scheduled for him to come back with the part. NO SHOW NO CALL. I made one call to him, after the first no-show. He asked, "is it running"? I told him no as he had yet to make any repairs. He responded, "that tells me something". Fitting us in with no notice so that we could have the dishwasher repaired before out-of-town family arrive, Jacob quickly identified the problem and fixed our dishwasher. Turns out that an extra screw used to install the dishwasher two years ago, before we bought our new-construction home, had fallen into the dishwasher and become stuck in the drain...over time, additional debris and food collected until the drain no longer worked. Jacob kept the work area (our kitchen) clean and dry, and after he was done, there was no evidence that he'd been there or that our dishwasher had just been removed from under the counter and repaired. Do not let this guy repair a gas appliance as he is not licensed to do so by the State of Maine. When I called him and asked if he fixed gas appliances he replied "YES". The State inspector called him to reiterate this fact. When he left he never checked oven and it turns out he left the settings for Natural Gas not LP so flames where shooting clear up into the oven. Extremely dangerous. He was at the home late morning and couldn't be bothered to return until 8:09 PM. When I called him to report this he said it would have been nice to know but he never asked despite the obvious that we live in very rural area with no NG. As if that wasn't bad enough our downstairs had strong odor of propane next morning. Good thing we left some windows open and even with windows open the odor was overwhelming. Wicked headaches all day. To date he has not reversed charges to my credit card. 6.15.21 - Still no refund to my credit card so I am filing formal complaint with Solid Fuel Board so that they can fine him for performing work he is not licensed to perform. I sent him an email that he hasn't even bothered to respond to, which is yet another example of just how unprofessional this guy is. If you had this guy perform work on your gas appliance for which he is unlicensed, you would be well-advised to have the repairs checked out by a licensed PROPANE & NATURAL GAS TECHNICIAN. Licensed techs may be found on Maine.gov, which I wish I knew before I contacted this clown. Update 6.30.21. Had Metropolitan Appliance Repair come out to fix Kurtz serious flaws in his repair. Had to pay another $265.00 to correct his shortcomings, which left my entire first floor smelling like gas. Happy to pay Metropolitan because they did a proper repair and were very detailed in doing so. Unlike Kurtz they checked their work to make sure repair done correctly. Nice to finally have a stove/oven again after many weeks of not having it. Kurtz has never responded to my email to him nor to the credit card company where I am disputing his charge for faulty repair. read more

Jacob took apart the washing machine, left the spinning cylinder outside the house, and left saying he could not fix it. Now instead of having a washing machine that can run, just not drain, we have a gutted washing machine inside our closet, along with a misplaced dryer in the hallway that he moved and never put back and the washer's cylinder on our doorstep. He also cashed the check for $200. Fantastic. Recommended if you want your machine gutted and parts strewn all over. read more

Do not bother calling for service - Jacob might not show up! We made several appointments with him to come back to service a refrigerator he worked on previously and the first time he was supposed to show up he didn't. When I called him, his excuse was that he had the wrong vehicle that day and didn't have the part he needed. We made another appointment, and even though I confirmed with him the day before, he did not show up, his voice mail was full, and he did not respond to a text! I am usually not one to write a negative review, regardless of my opinion of a business/tech however I will certainly make an exception here. I HIGHLY discourage ANYone looking for professional work from using this business. We had our dishwasher break and our home warranty company required an estimate. Jacob was quick to jump on the job collect his $139 "Service Fee" however that is conveniently the last time we would be able to contact him. Any calls made to him go to his "full" voicemail box and clearly he cant be bothered to return any of his missed calls. I reached out to the company who handles the warranty and without him SIMPLY sending a estimate to their email, they are unable to help further. The specialist at the warranty company (trying to help as best she can) attempts to reach out to Jacob and FINALLY was able to reach him. She was greeted by a simply rude "this is ridiculous" followed by him hanging up on her. Then he doesn't answer any following calls. SO in summary I would NOT under ANY circumstance recommend this company to anybody looking to have work done and pray one day he finds time in his "busy" schedule to clear out all of that darn voicemail cause just maybe some people would be willing to work directly with him if he simply ANSWERED THE PHONE and explained that he doesn't like to work with outside companies or to answer calls. read more

Avoid this guy. Broke a part of our range while "fixiing" it. Combative and a little scary when challenged (politely) that the problem was caused by him pouring water into the oven to clean under the burners. Most people would have a reasonable debate and maybe settle on some reasonable outcome - instead aggressive with my wife, left saying he needed to get a part, and never returned after charging me $125. My LG Washer drum was lose (turned out it was free floating). I struggled to get help and then found Kurtz Appliance Repair. He lives nearby and I figured I would now have an option into the future. He did not respond immediately but when he did he came at an odd hour, late Friday night...which was great. The drum was disconnected and so he took it apart and then given the late hour, said he would return over the weekend...which he did. The machine eventually appeared fixed, so having to clean up some mess he left seemed to be an ok trade. I paid 1/2 or more of what a new machine would cost. Soon I noticed water is leaking when we do a wash. Enough to need a bucket in the cellar. I attempted a few times to get him back but got no response. Disappointing to say the least and as I can not find other options at this writing, my advice might be to just take your money and buy new in the future. Mis-diagnosed the problem, claimed to have ordered and paid for the replacement part and after multiple weeks of phone calls and phoney commitments, we stopped trying to contact him and went elsewhere. Look elsewhere! Jacob damaged the door of my high end LG refrigerator while doing warranty service. He left saying he needed to order parts and would replace the door. Each time I phoned to follow up he said he was "expecting parts this week". He never said they were MY parts. After a month of skillful avoidance, I called the manufacturer. He treated them the same. Once claiming he couldn't hear them, twice saying he was not in his office to provide them with a purchase order number for my parts, etc. When he stopped answering or returning their calls and failed to answer their emails, they black listed him from their authorized service center list. LG has been wonderful to deal with. Rather than trust any work he has done, they have offered a refund or replacement. Do NOT call this business! The man puts on a pretty good front like he knows something about what he's supposed to be doing. But, the proper training, workmanship and professionalism is just not there. For $125 he not only didn't fix our oven, but disabled the electronic ignition switch for the surface burners while "bypassing" some circuit on the control board (for an extra $25). He proceeded to tell me the part was back ordered, took the money and left assuring me he would call when the part came in.
