We got to Kilkenny early afternoon and needed to eat. The shopkeeper at Smithwick's was super helpful in recommending a place to eat. Kyteler's was one of them. So glad we chose this place. Immediately got a table, perused the menu, for me, I found the bangers & mashed potatoes. It was awesome, and plentiful. Almost too much. The others picked the signature dish of Vol Au Vents (open faced chicken pot pie). They loved them, cleaned their plates. All meals were hot and freshly prepared. Quite good! Again, the service was awesome, many people covering all the tables. NO waiting. The beer selection was really good. I enjoyed a Kilkenny ale, others had the O'hara's witches brew. Very Good as well. The ambiance was very neat as the architecture and history within the building is like nothing I have ever seen. From the moment you walk in the doors, you have to walk up steps and are greeted right at the bar. The atmosphere is cozy and the waiters are all pretty fun with the typical Irish sarcasm we have learned to smile at and join in with. The food was just okay. We had the burger and the lasagne. It was nothing epic, was edible, but nothing wowed us. I would have loved to try the Kytler's whisky and beers, but they were interestingly not offered so we stuck with the Guiness. read more

Nice pub in a walkable part of Kilkenny. Some of the wait staff was a little frazzled but it was busy and nearing the end of the day, so understandable. Food was decent enough. The star of the show for us was the sticky toffee pudding. Might not seem like much but to us (we're American), we had an eye opening experience. Neither of us had ever had this treat before but I can tell you I was inspired to start looking up recipes after the first bite. Kyteler's Inn has a fantastic vibe, from the exterior facade to the interior rustic charm. We went here off a recommendation from a worker at a local craft shop, and I'm glad we did. They offered your standard Irish Pub Fare, but was well executed. I got the roast beef special, just to avoid getting the same staples I've been getting at each Irish Pub I visit. The roast beef was quite flavorful and layered in a nice sauce, but unfortunately the meat itself was much tougher than I was expecting. The vegetable sides help break up the meal well. We had a sticky toffee pudding for dessert that was very well executed and had a wonderful flavor to it. Overall, I'd recommend this place as one of the better options in the city. read more

We came here for an early dinner on our first night in town. RUDE is the only way to describe the servers. My daughter and I wanted to sit at a four top in the bar. We were told several times by different people they are reserved for four tops. Not a single four top walked in while we were there. However, multiple two tops walked out on them. They would rather loose money then let two people sit there. This is one of the most ridiculous rules that I see places follow. Despite this being a total tourist spot, it was a blast! They have live Irish music every night and the band we saw had people clapping to the music all night long. Some even started to dance around the entire space! Great selection of beer and whiskey and the bartender we had the previous night was super knowledgeable and we had fun razzing each other back and forth. We just came in for a drink and live music, as the few times we walked by for food it always seemed very busy. I will say, it does feel a bit tourist trap like in here but it was very decorated for halloween which I love. Came here for lunch with a group of 7 and was pleased with our experience! Love the ambience of this place and it's supposedly haunted. The decor was fun to look around at. We thought it was funny (as Americans) that we got seated right under the American flag and a picture of JFK haha We were seated right away so that was nice to not have to wait for a table. I had their witches brew beer which was very dark and tasty! Their menu was great because it seemed like everyone could find something on the menu they liked, even pickier eaters. Tourist trap with a medieval witch backstory theme. Pretty cool setting with a downsized, Hogwarts style dining room. Food was on the low end of acceptable. I had the lamb stew which was tasty but a small portion that didn't include even a slice of bread, so I felt hungry after finishing. My son got the steak sandwich and ate just a couple bites because it was bland and tough. My wife's pizza was reminiscing of something you would pick up at a gas station. To top it off, I watched one of the waitstaff walk out of a stall in the bathroom and not even stop at the sink. Never in my sixty years of life have I been asked for a receipt as proof that I paid for my beer. Of course, the waiter didn't give me any bill so I felt very strange. Very cool ambience and easy access from the medieval mile in Kilkenny. The food left much to be desired. We tried the lamb stew, burger, fish & chips, and the roast beef special. Here's what we ordered: - small bucket of spicy wings - Ham & Ballymaloe Relish on brown bread - tuna & sweetcorn on white bread - Smithwick's Blonde Pretty straight forward place with good eats. What drew me to the place was the stories about Alice Kytler and her headmaid, Petronella. The story goes, as stated on their site: The oldest Inn in Kilkenny, Established in 1324 it is the home of the Great Dame Alice Kytler who was the first person to be accused of Witchcraft in Ireland. The Daughter of a wealthy banker she had 4 husbands that all died "Mysteriously" and was led to be accused of Heresy, Witchcraft and Murder. She fled her home of Kilkenny leaving her head maid in charge. Petronella, her head maid was then dragged through the streets and burned at the steak. Her home has lived on as an Inn and can be often visited by the spirit of Alice. We visited and loved the ambiance. Come to check it out! read more

The Kyteler's Inn was just perfect. All of the staff are incredibly nice. They tag team the table and anyone is available to help you with your needs. We were a group of 9 and were seated immediately. I had the lasagne, which was just scrumptious. Every said "Lasagne in Ireland?" But I wanted to go out on a limb and boy am I glad I did. Fish & Chips were the best my friend has had so far on our 6 days in Ireland...and he has been trying them everywhere! The Guiness was good, cold & steady. The atmosphere was eclectic irish. Very interesting to look at, which we did get up and look around for a litte bit. The history, which we looked up after we were done with our meal, is very unusual. read more
