THE GOOD ---------------- + Great aerial view of the city! Obviously not as high as the Eiffel Tower, but still very solid views, ESPECIALLLLY of the Champs Elysees right outside. + Besides the view of the city, there are historical artifacts inside at different points as you walk up. Definitely worth a look when you need a break. + There are restrooms about halfway up the Arc, so don't fret if you just downed a bottle of water. THE NOT SO GOOD ---------------------------- - The walk up and down the Arc's top is definitely a workout. I'm still tired just thinking about it! There are alottttttt of dizzying steps on the spiral staircase, so mentally prepare yourself for it before embarking. - Crossing the street over to the Arc can be an adventure with no street lights or signs controlling the traffic so cross at your own peril! MIXED THOUGHTS --------------------------- = Nada. RANDOM OBSERVATIONS ------------------------------------- = Buy an e-ticket! You can cut the long line if you do!
This place is pure magic; especially at night. Climbing to the top is worth every step. Once you're there, the view of the twinkling lights of the Champs-Élysées look like a river of stars. You also have a beautiful view of the Eiffel Tower sparkling against the night sky. The city feels grand beyond grand. I personally prefer this view to the Eiffel Tower itself. From here, you can see the city's layout, the long avenues, and the monuments perfectly by night. There's a quiet energy at the top where people pause and soak in the city of light. The winding narrow staircases and the engravings inside the arch have such a rich sense of history. By the time you reach the top, you're rewarded with that unforgettable view. The Arc de Triomphe is my favourite landmark of Paris and quite possible the most magical one I've been to yet.

The Arc is a masterpiece of sculptures like La Marseillaise, and has all the lists of generals and the battles they fought. This site also has the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from WWI with an eternal flame. You can purchase tickets to go to the top of the arc if you choose.
L'Arc de Triomphe was established by Napoleon to honor the French Army and those who died during the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars. It also serves as a memorial for unknown soldiers from World War I with an eternal flame that burns in remembrance of all unidentified soldiers who died in both World Wars. My boyfriend and I took the M1 and exited Charles de Gaulle-Etoile to get to the L'Arc de Triomphe and took the 73 bus on our trip back. This landmark looks best from across the street. If you want to get closer to see it up close, please take 2 stairwells from across the street to access the tunnel to cross over to the L'Arc de Triomphe. I hear there are many accidents from tourists trying to cross from the street side. This roundable is really hectic so I can see how it is not safe to cross. The Arc is in the center of Place Charles du Gaulle's 12 grand avenues that light up like a star, hence the etoile. Designed by Jean-Francois-Therese Chalgrin, it was designed in a neoclassical style with symmetry and grandeur. It is a representation of harmony, power, and symbolism. To be completely honest, I was completely unaware of the history, prior to visiting. It was quite a learning experience for me and I was glad we came to pay respect to the soldiers who passed away.

As we had some business along les Champs-Élysées (going to the Apple store to purchase a cord for my computer), we naturally came across the Arc de Triomphe, which is located at Place Charles de Gaulle, the west terminus of les Champs-Élysées. The Arc de Triomphe is a 162.5 foot tall, 147.0 foot wide tall arch that was built between 1806 and 1836 and it honors those who fought a during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. Due to the huge, chaotic, anxiety-inducing crowds, I once again decided to just admire it from afar. Also, the monument is in the center of a round-about with a dozen lanes of traffic. However, I have since learned that there is an underground tunnel leading to the arch so next time I am in Paris, I may finally visit it up close. More than tripled in entry price over the last 15 years the value of climbing to the top is subjective, especially after navigating the odd underground route to get there. At 164 feet tall, and now 190 years old, the marble construction remains immaculate as a tribute to Napoleon told in the small museum.
Nice view of the city, I heard it's a great place for sunset. Make sure you buy tix online ahead of time. There are 284 spiral steps, it was a tough climb. Supposedly there's an elevator for the disabled but I didn't see it. Make sure you use the underground tunnel (Passage du Souvenir) from Champs-Elysees side to cross traffic. No backpacks larger than 40x40x20 and no tripod/selfie sticks allowed, there are no lockers available.

In the classic musical "Funny Face", Fred Astaire opened the bouncy "Bonjour Paris" by jauntily walking away from it on the Champs-Elysses and ending at the Eiffel Tower. Jamie W and I made the smarter move and closed our trip here. What's the difference you may ask? Well, it's because when you get to the top, you can see many of the landmarks you already visited. I've never actually been here. I really thought we had to brave the multiple roundabout traffic, but no, there was a convenient and clean underground passage. We had bought tickets in advance for 22€ each. As we readied to take the stairs, a courteous young man asked me if I'd prefer using the elevator. I didn't know it was even an option, so we glided about three flights short of the top of the arch with ease. Actually it stopped on the floor where we could peruse the informative museum. There was also a surprisingly large gift shop chock full of quality souvenirs. The climax obviously was the observatory rooftop. No surprise there were quite a few tourists here but not nearly the zoo at the Eiffel Tower or in front of the Mona Lisa at the Louvre. We could see Place de la Concorde at one end and the modern La Defense at the other. The Eiffel Tower is within clear view (and vice-versa) as well as Sacre-Coeur. We couldn't help but let out a sigh and say out loud "Jusqu'à ce qu'on se revoie, Paris!" RELATED - Exploring Paris? Commissioned by Napoleon I in 1806, it features many sculptures like La Marseillaise, lists of generals and battles, and (my highlight) houses the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from WWI with an eternal flame. Visitors can climb (or take an elevator for some) to the top for panoramic city views and explore a museum inside.
Fairly cool night with a light and intermittent breeze in Paris. The streets while somewhat crowded, were clean and there was sufficient enough space. Extremely enjoyable time in December. Most stores were open as well as cafe's, boulangeries (bakeries) and patisseries (pastry shops). People of the city are extremely friendly and welcoming. Neoclassical architecture such as the Arch de Triomphe must be seen in person. Pictures alone can't possibly convey the size and splendor. It took 30 years to create this wonderment...looking forward to visiting again in the Spring or early Fall when I have more time to properly appreciate this piece of work along with the multitudes of others throughout this beautiful and alluring city.
L'Arc de Triomphe de l'Étoile or Arc de Triomphe is one of the most iconic monuments in Paris. The Arc de Triomphe honors those who fought and died for France in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars and was built in the early 19th century. Just a great landmark with lots of history - so lots of the history is written somewhere so I won't go on about it. As a tourist, I didn't spend much time here, but it was astonishing to see and stand underneath. It's located at the end of the Avenue de Champs-Élysées - one of the most famous luxury shopping areas in the world. The sculptures and the structure itself is truly a sight to behold. Heck, I'm even pretty amazed at the copy version at the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas. It's free to see and walk up to and since at the time of my visit, I was on a pretty strict budget, I thought it would be great to see after walking along the Champs-Élysées. The Tome of the Unknown Soldier is also another fun site to see and its' located underneath the Arc De Triomphe. I consider it a privilege and myself so fortunate that I was able to see this place. Okay, okay, let's get to the real reason I'm posting and writing this review now other than posterity (as I visited this place years ago). This is part of my John Wick 4 nostalgia tour. I wanted to put this up when I first watched the movie in theaters, but didn't for whatever reason. But almost every scene in Paris in the movie was a place I visited during my Paris trip. Watching that movie really wanted me to revisit Paris again and retrace my steps as well as the steps in the film. This scene in particular in the roundabout was one of the most fun, albeit unbelievable action sequences I've seen in any movie. It was in the portion of the movie that paid homage to The Warriors another movie I am fond of.
If you want to have a civil disagreement with your spouse in a Paris Metro station this is the place to do it. I told my wife we stay in the Metro station and follow the signs to the Arc. She said we exit the station, which we did because I always do what she says. Well........we ended up across the roundabout/ street from the Arc. Pro tip. Never attempt to cross to get to the Arc. You will be playing a real life game of Frogger. Anyway the Arc is beautiful. Definitely a must visit.
Quality/Quantity - Another tourist attraction. Crazy busy. Still beautiful and has much history. One of many of France's monuments. I like the underground path to get here, to avoid the dangerous traffic. You can pay to go to the top which we did not. I believe you can buy tickets online in advance. Ambiance - See pictures. Service - Self service. Price - Free for us as we did not want to go to the top. 22 Euros, $26 USD to go to the top. Owner Comment - Congrats on all your success since 1810...? Final completion was in 1830. read more
This very large French memorial is very famous and a real crowd pleaser. It's free to visit but does charge a fee to climb the over 250 interior steps to the roof for the nice views offered there. The Arch is located in the middle of a huge roundabout for vehicles and is only accessible via underground tunnel as it would be impossible to safely walk/run through that crazy circular traffic. Once there, you are on its island and totally safe. There, it's a huge photo op. It is also so interesting to see all of the names of the battles France was involved as they are commemorated on the Arch. Also they list the last names of many ex-French generals that served. Those that have a line under their name died in battle. On the street level is the French Tomb of the Unknown soldier with a short ceremony of it every day at 6:30 pm. You can also look down the Champs Elysee all the way down to The Louvre far away. If you come to Paris, you have to come here for 30 minutes. Then afterward go walking down one of the most famous streets for shopping in the world. read more

Inspired by Rome, commissioned by Napoleon, and standing as the centerpiece of Paris, lies the Arc the Triomphe. This massive monument, where 12 avenues converge, houses the tomb of the unknown soldier (World War 1) and the eternal flame. I had the pleasure of driving by, and walking around this fine piece of history. However, I did not get the chance to climb up its 248 steps to the panoramic view. This is a future endeavor, as my girlfriend and I intend to come back in the near future. As a history buff, I was able to appreciate the names referencing the generals and battles of the Napoleonic Wars. It's amazing walking the area where both axis and allied troops marched through, at different points during World War 2. For anyone visiting Paris, the Arc de Triomphe is definitely a must! Make sure to put it in your bucket list, alongside the other monuments this city has to offer. read more
What a magnificent landmark and it's become one of my favorite sights ever in all the world! What's very special about this world recognized icon is its magnificent layout with 12 major avenues, including the Champs-Elysées, radiating symmetrically from it like giant spokes on a wheel. It's a massive and beautiful white limestone structure that's visible from about a mile away in all directions. It was completed in 1836 and commemorates those who died in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. Also somewhat unique is the huge 5 lane deep traffic circle around it. It's also known locally as the "Circle of Death" lol. Unconventionally, those entering the traffic circle have the right of way (as opposed to those already within the circle) and inner circle traffic has to yield. It makes for some interesting traffic patterns and it's all best observed from a passenger seat! But with almost 200 years' experience, it all works out just fine for the Parisian drivers! read more
I do love visiting these amazing famous landmarks, this one has so much history. This monument honors those who fought and died for France in the French revolutionary and Napoleonic wars. Standing at 164 ft tall it's very impressive. You really need to walk all around this to see all the plaques and engraved sculptures in the monument. Easy to access, lots of side streets and close to public transportation. read more

An incredible iconic landmark! We hiked the stairs to the top, which was well worth the view of the city. Included on Paris museum pass which made for easy entrance without waiting in line. Elevators are present for those who need handicap accessibility. Highly recommend! read more
Visited Arc de Triomphe on a Sunday after visiting the Eiffel Tower. Originally, we thought it wasn't worth getting tickets, until we realized it was actually free on Sundays. What an amazing idea. Getting inside is fairly easy. Make sure you head underground through the tunnel to head to the main site. Don't try to cross the road! You can access it from the Champs Elysses side and I believe the opposite avenue. It's about 280 steps to climb up, but there's a small museum and shop where you can give your legs a rest and see some stuff. Once you get all the way up, the views are fascinating. We didn't even have sunshine, but was able to get a 360 degree view of Paris. This is definitely a must see when in Paris. read more

Of course, while visiting Paris for the 1st time (09/26/2023-09/29/2023), a visit to one of the world's largest triumphal arches was on our itinerary, as a must-see! For those who don't know, in addition to being one of the world's largest triumphal arches, Arc de Triomphe is also described as one of the "most famous and most visited" monuments in Paris (along w/ the Eiffel Tower, of course:) After visiting the Arc de Triomphe in person, I can definitely see why so many people from all over, flock to see the Arc de Triomphe. It really is something special and I just wanted to share my feedback and a few helpful tidbits. - - - special-ness specs: At 164 ft high and 148 ft wide, the Arc de Triomphe is MASSIVE! And at 1st sight, I was in awe at just how huge it was! (see the videos & pics included in this review of this historic, architectural beauty) - - - roundabout traffic hotspot: I also wanted to share this additional info about the LOCATION of the Arc de Triomphe because I had never experienced anything similar before and the traffic location design really adds to the overall experience. The Arc de Triomphe is located in the middle of 12 avenues that then have multiple "lanes" that go into a huge and definitely dangerous roundabout surrounding it. This roundabout is a traffic hotspot! There are no actual lines on the road that indicate the multiple lanes. Vehicles literally are cutting each other off to get into the roundabout and to get out of the roundabout. At times, it even looked like the drivers were aiming straight at each other...on purpose! (see video included in this review of my attempt of trying to capture the live action of the beautiful chaos) Experiencing this traffic roundabout as a passenger in the back seat of a vehicle is like riding one of those insane roller coasters that have you being flung from side to side while you're doing your best to hold on for dear life, w/ your eyes shut and silently saying a prayer of safety making it off the ride in one piece BUT w/ the added awesome twist of getting to experience your Paris driver making hand gestures that communicate nonverbal cues of frustration at his fellow Parisian driver! This roundabout will definitely have you saying "oh sh$t, did you see what that car just did?!!" ;)) An experience that my hubby and I are still talking about! :)) Additional Helpful Info: - - - pedestrian safety_underpass: there is an underpass that pedestrians can walk through to reach the Arc de Triomphe I would NOT recommend pedestrians trying to cross the roundabout traffic on foot because it is very dangerous w/ the amount of vehicles driving at any given time. And of course, despite the dangerous factor, I still saw quite a few tourists attempting to dodge vehicles to reach the Arc de Triomphe. There are stairs leading down to the underpass on the Avenue de la Grande Armee' side (see video & pics included in this review) To sum it up, a visit to the famous Arc de Triomphe is definitely a MUST-SEE! What a sight!!! This is an incredible landmark! Out of everything in Paris, L'Arc de Triomphe was one of the most impressive to me. It is sooooooo big! The size is mesmerizing. It's more impressive than the Eiffel Tower to be honest. We took a bus tour to L'Arc de Triomphe. It was awesome. A great way to get to see the architecture and appreciate it from all angles. It was fun to see all the people underneath too. It looked like they were having a ceremony also when we drove past. Super cool to see! :) read more

Views for days. Absolutely gorgeous. We went after a rare hail storm. There is a tunnel to get to the Arc, rather than attempting to cross the traffic circle. read more
We weren't planning originally to go inside the Arc but we ended up getting the Museum Pass so we thought - why not? And I'm really glad we did. We got there at around 2 on a Monday. It was a bit crowded but it wasn't too bad. You do need to climb 284 steps (a lot of which are spiraled) but the view is so worth it. It's a 360 view of Paris and you get a nice view of the Eiffel Tower. We spent about 45 minutes in total there including climbing, enjoying the view at the top, and taking pictures outside. If you're not staying in the area, I'd recommend combining a visit to the Arc with one to the Eiffel Tower (go SUPER early for that one). The Arc is about a 20 minute walk away. Tip - if you need to cross the huge roundabout of cars, there's a tunnel underneath that's connected to the metro. You don't need to dash across like we did, before we found out about it. read more
Definitely make sure to find the tunnel that goes under the road to get to the arc safely. We did walk up the steps, which was a bit challenging for sure. I actually got dizzy from the tight spiral and had to stop a couple times to regain my balance. There are lots of places to step to the side if people need to pass you so that's not an issue. Once you have reached the top, there is a window in the floor that allows you to see directly below at the base of the monument. The day we were there, a ceremony was happening, so we were actually able to watch it through the window. I'm glad we made the climb, as the views from the top are spectacular. Definitely worth the effort! read more

L'Arc de Triomphe is more than just a cultural landmark. Two thousand years ago, it was said that all roads lead to Rome. Well today, it seems all roads in Gaul lead to the L'Arc de Triomphe de l'Étoile Triumphal Arch of the Star is a War Memorial for the Unknown Soldier. It is a monument to celebration the defeated of an enemy. Yes, it's even a traffic circle, where twelve roads converge. But it is the confluence of those Boulevards which makes L'Arc the center of Paris. On our first trip to Paris, I got stuck driving around the L'Arc de Triomphe for ten minutes. Sort of like Mr Bean or Clark Griswold in the movies. LOL When we came back several days later to get a picture of this iconic monument. That took nearly thirty minutes, before I was able to take a postcard worthy picture without cars in it. LOL There is a tunnel you can access, which will lead safely underground to this Monument. There are also tours, a museum, lots of stairs to the top and yes, a gift shop. It was commissioned in 1806, after the victory over Austria by Napoleon Bonaparte and was completed on July 29th, 1836. The Arc de Triomphe honors those who fought and died for France. On it's walls, it lists all the French victories going back to the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars Napoleon did returned on December 15th 1840, when his remains passed under L'Arc on their way to his tomb at Les Invalides. The annual Bastille Day parade (July 14th) also starts here and goes down the Champs-Élysées. I always meant to look and see, if they have the Battle of Yorktown against the British listed. A nice memorial with beautiful views from the very top! We only waited about 40 minutes total, through 2 different lines (one to buy tickets and the other to get through security) to get to the elevator. For those not capable of walking up the 284 steps to the level where there's a shop and then access to the roof, there is an elevator. But once you get to this level on the elevator, you'll still have about 40 more steps to get to the roof. It's great to walk around and see the different sites around Paris. read more
Well I have to be honest here, we came here just for the gram. It's an iconic spot in Paris that everyone has seen at least once in their life so I had to stop by. Even if it's for just a photo. We came early and realized that we might actually get a photo with no one around us. It didn't occur to us that no cars could be behind us as well. How lucky are we? Well that happened and we feel so fortunate that we had a great photo with the L'Arc de Triomphe in the background. Be prepared for lots of people doing illegal things on the road to get that perfect photo or people jumping in your photo while everyone else is waiting patiently. It didn't happen to us but we noticed it happening as I took a moment to appreciate L'Arc de Triomphe. We felt horrible for those affected. The details of the landmark is amazing so take a quick moment to appreciate it. Well worth the visit and after we walked Champs-Élysées. Must visit spot at least once in your lifetime as you can kill two birds with one stone while here. read more
This is a must see attraction when in Paris, so obviously we had to check it out! I was surprised at how busy of an area it's situated in, but I love the mix of the old architecture amongst the city life. What a beautiful landmark to get to drive by every day! There's so much to do and see nearby, so it's worth the trip even if it might be out of the way. You can access the monument through two different flights of stairs situated on opposite blocks that connect underground. The whole landmark is really well taken care of and made for some awesome photo opportunities. Totally worth going to see if you're in Paris. read more
It is a stunning sight to see. I did not understand until I was standing in front of it. Just completely in awe of it. If I could only see one and it's between the Eiffel Tower or the Arc, hands down this is my choice. Be careful if you decide to cross the street, there are so many cars. But there is a safer way to get to the other side if you're ok with a little bit of stairs. read more

The Arc of course is one of the landmarks in Paris. A must do for first time visitors. Last time in Paris we skipped this one. But since this time we came for the Champs-Elysees and the Christmas lights, we combined the two sights. And it definitely is an impressive sight. It's a huge Arc, measuring 50 meters in height, it's 45 meters long and 22 wide. The Architect Jean Francois Chalgrin was inspired by Roman Arches. The Arc de Triomphe was inaugurated in 1836 by French king, Louis Philippe, who dedicated it to the armies of the Revolution and the Empire. You can visit the monument, but many like us just came for an outside look. It did look very nice indeed with the lights on at night. Besides that it is just the probably busiest spot in Paris traffic-wise. Getting a good pic is nearly impossible. Except you crop the road out. Surely a place to visit. But I wouldn't come back every time in Paris. It's fine once or twice, but Paris offers countless more sights. read more

"If you could read my heart, you would see the place I have given you there." - Gustave Flaubert L'Arc de Triomphe is perhaps the greatest standing Arc in the world. There are many magnificent Arcs across Europe, however what sets this Arc apart is its storied history with Napoleon Bonaparte. On my first visit to L'Arc de Triomphe, a couple years back, as I approached this giant of a landmark (nearly 170 ft tall) it took my breath away seeing such beauty even from afar. As a student of History that look of amazement on my face only intensified as I got closer. And yes, I'm sure everyone thought I was crazy with that look haha. The Parisian in me;) There's an elevator that will bring you to the top, but of course I decided I had to do the walk to the top. Trust me, you need to be in semi decent shape on that climb. It's not so much the amount of steps in a circular pattern, but also the people behind you that won't allow you to slow down lol. The view at the top makes it all worth while. A panoramic view of Paris! Breathtaking! I was there at night and witnessed La Eiffel across the Seine glimmering with life and hope. It's forever etched in my heart *sigh* Napoleon commissioned the Arc to be built in 1806, after the victory at Austerlitz at the peak of his power and influence. Groundbreaking began on his birthday of the same year. Laying the foundations alone took two years. In 1811, the original architect, Jean Chalgrin, died and his work was taken over by Jean-Nicolas Huyot. However, construction was painfully slow with the French requirements for absolute perfection. During the Bourbon Restoration, construction was halted as the country was at a crossroads. Napoleon died in 1821 never seeing the completion of his beloved L'Arc . During the reign of King Louis-Philippe, it was finally completed, circa 1833 and 1836. Over a decade after Napoleon's death, and almost three decades after groundbreaking. This attention to detail and National pride of such a historic landmark can be seen everywhere on the Arc. A visit to Paris requires a stop at L'Arc de Triomphe. Be amazed! Trust! Today, L'Arc de Triomphe honours those who fought and died for France in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, with the names of all French victories and generals inscribed on its inner and outer surfaces. Beneath its vault lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from World War I. In the end, I highly recommend a night visit to L'Arc de Triomphe. I would also suggest purchasing a Paris Museum Pass which allows you access to many museums across Paris and skip-the-line entry to this historic landmark! Oh!
