This little gem in the village of Etoges may have been the find of our entire trip back to France…read more When we found the restaurant at the chateau we were spending a few days at was closed for our visit, our concierge advised us that this was a place that we could walk to from the chateau and have a authentic french meal. It was so authentic that the gentlemen did not speak one word of english! That is okay! We are in France, after all! I had to suffer my way through my awful french and figure out what we were ordering and actually order it for my boyfriend and I! The prix fixe menu was 15 euro! 4 courses for 15 euro?! I actually thought after the very expansive first charcuterie boardd, that I had read the menu wrong, and since La Forge only takes euros , my boyfriend discreetly started counting our combined euros! His first course was a lardon salade; the bacon pieces were so thick and the dijon vinagrette in France is nothing compared to bottled junk in the US. My charcuterie plate had 5 meats with pates and a foie gras, pickles and chutney, and of course, as the french do it.. never ending baguettes. Our bottle of local french red wine: 7euro. I had a duck breast with a champagne sauce and potato mash. Divine. He had a pork tenderloin with dijon sauce and potatoes. The cheese course was filled with french cheeses that threw my very American boyfriend very off. I thought we may have a international incident on our hands. Oh Americans. The french man seems to own this little cafe housed at the bottom of a home. He cooked everything to order and was eager to please us. There was a huge roaring fireplace in the small, quiet, quiet, rustic french adobe. We absolutely loved it. We passed on our fourth course, because I honestly thought that I was mistaken about the price when our portions were so massive. I felt they must be 15 euro per course. Well, I was wrong. Total bill was 44 euro out the door; including the corked and re-corked fresh bottle of local wine to take back to the chateau! I can't wait to return!

It was really cold outside and the roaring fire was wonderful making the place very cozy. Unfortunately we didn't get to stay for lunch as we know it would have been delightful with authentic French regional cuisine. We watched the cook in the kitchen preparing everything from scratch. The café au lait was perfect!

The three things I remember most about this meal:…read more 1. I had a lot of champagne and then ended the meal with a port. That is I had a lot to drink, so you may want to consider this when reading this review. 2. The food was delicious, and there was a lot of it. I felt like dishes just kept and coming and some of them larger than I expected. And just when you thought it was over, an incredible cheese cart comes out. 3. I was stuffed to the point I was a bit uncomfortable. My own fault, but just keep this in mind because there is a lot food and you definitely want to have room when the cheese cart comes out. The highlight of this meal is the cheese cart, so if you love cheese, this is heaven. And even better, the waiter serving the cheese is so excited about it that it makes you excited. The food throughout the champagne region is France is incredible and this was another exceptional meal.

The pigeon entrée was especially divine and this restaurant features a special vegetarian menu as well. Our favorite part of the meal, however, was the cheese course. A large carte is rolled to the table showcasing at least twenty-five or more regional cheeses. The enthusiastic cheese man described in great detail each of the cheeses and when we would choose one, he would become animated with excitement as he gave more descriptions. The cheeses were so delicious that we all agreed that a great meal could be made with a bottle of wine and that cheese carte. Alas, that is not an option. There are three different prix fixe menus to choose from, however, and they all include cheese. Reservations a MIUST! Bon apetite!
