Take the road to Lauzerte and Cahors out of Valence d'Agen, and when you come to the village of Lalande, this unprepossessing establishment will appear on your left. Just after it on the left is a small car park, but feel free to park French-style on the opposite verge. Once inside, a bustling standard of service will quickly ask if you'd like soup. The waitress (always been a female so far!) will give you a spoken list of choices for each course, and you make your choice. You'll notice a wide range of customers, from groups of workmen chatting earnestly about the political situation of the latest rugby results, to couples and families calling in for a good-value and filling meal. The cuisine is "traditionelle" - hearty home cooking - and for your 11,75EUR you'll get soup, a buffet starter, a main course, an extensive cheese board (we counted eight cheeses last time) and a dessert. My husband enjoyed his foie gras and meaty lamb shank. Portions were generous. This is a small place and the waiter is also the cook. They were very friendly but didn't speak much English so we used Google translate.

Beautifully situated among the vines of the Vallée du Lot, Le Callau is artfully considered, with seating under the trees or in a re-purposed barn or recently completed dining room/bar area. Chaz, his wife and their team take great pride in their 'farm to table' philosophy. Each server is well versed in the gustatory selections of the moment, and service is always warm and welcoming. Children of all ages find the interior courtyard interesting to explore, with its fountain and ever-inviting weeping willow tree. A walk along the country lane after an interesting, satisfying meal, prepare one for after dinner desserts and/or drinks. "Casual and VERY classy" is how the experience is best described. For example, I arrived with 3 elderly guests, all with some mobility issues, and Chaz immediately brought out padded chairs from the dining room as he recognized that old bodies would have a difficult time sitting for any length of time on the typical 'minimalist' patio chairs that are usually found outdoors. (We were in for a 3-hr lunch, so this was a great idea)!! Le Caillau is a 300-year-old wine domaine, and the complex includes a luxury 2-bedroom suite, including private swimming pool and garden. (NOTE: We have dine there many times, but never stayed overnight, so cannot speak to the accommodations, other than saying EVERYTHING is tastefully decorated and service at all levels is impeccable). Reservations are a must, but, in order to enjoy the experience fully, come when not pressed for time. This is a place to relax, enjoy and experiment with new epicurean delights! Walking around the circular town center is a very memorable experience. We had lunch at the Auberge which is clearly a popular spot for locals. Every aspect of the experience was outstanding, particularly my charcuterie and duck confit. It was also a tremendous value for such delicious food. If you're anywhere in the Gers I highly recommend making a trip here and to Fourcès.
