On our second night in Basel, before we were to leave on our Viking cruise, we chose Schnabel for…read moredinner. Relatively easy walk from our hotel, and kept us in the area where the Autumn Festival was being held. We were happy with our choice. We got there at 5 when they opened, because we wanted to get to the festival before it became too dark outside. When we arrived, we were seated right away, and there was only one other table with guests. But from there, it slowed down....a lot. It was about 10 minutes before our server took our drink order, and another 10 before he checked back to see if we were ready to order (we were). Any time we needed anything, including the check at the end, we would have to flag him down and ask. I don't recall him checking on us once during the entire meal. Service was average, at best.
But the food, was very good. My wife had the pumpkin ravioli, and I had the ham, egg and cheese rosti. Along with a good German beer and my wife's choice of a prosecco, we were happy with the food....except for the bottle of water for the table.....that I was charged 11 euros for!
If I were a local, or could speak German, I would go back for the food. Back as an American, I felt a little overlooked and unwelcome in the end.
