There was already a line when we got there, but thankfully, it was worth the wait! Luckily, we only had to wait about 15 minutes, but I did notice that some people who arrived after us were turned away, so I'd recommend coming early and making reservations if you can. The prices were inexpensive, which was a nice surprise. Just keep in mind that they do take their time with the food, and it took a while for our dishes to come out. If you have somewhere you need to be at a specific time, I'd definitely let the staff know beforehand. We sat outside, and the ambiance was really nice and made for a pleasant experience. Now, let's talk about the onion soup! It was SO good. We were actually pretty full after the soup alone because it was very hearty! We absolutely love French onion soup, and this was our first time having it in Paris, so we were really excited to try it. The broth was seasoned so well and had so much flavor that I wanted to drink it! We loved it so much that when we had French onion soup at another place the next day, it was honestly pretty mid in comparison. We actually found ourselves specifically craving this one again! We arrived around 7:45 and most of the tables had already been taken up by a reservation or earlier arrivers. Not a big deal - we found an area with a counter top to stand by and some chairs to put our coats down on. At first I thought as like oh no, there's nowhere left to sit. (When ur 30, having a place to sit at a bar is kind of a big deal.) But, it really honestly didn't end up bothering me that we were standing most of the time, and I think we actually had more fun that way. Oh, and for those who like dancing, there's a downstairs area with a dance floor! The bar itself is awesome - there's a foosball table ("baby foot"), a big screen (which wasn't on when we arrived), and the layout of the bar is quite favorable to mingling. Let's talk about the bartender/possible owner? One of the bartenders (who I suspect could be the owner) is an adorable older lady! A cool grandma working at a bar? Oh heck yea. She is just the best. If u forget to grab something, there's both a pizzeria and a burger/kebab fast-food type of place right next door. This bar is ideally located near Belleville and on rue Saint maur, across the street from Le dude. It's also minutes away from Le cafe Cheri, which is a fun place to head to after. This could also be an ideal place to stop by after grabbing dumplings in Belleville. Updated to add: come here ASAP! This is just so legit. The owner (the older grandma named Marie) is just so freaking adorable. She really makes u feel welcome and at home. So we made a reservation by phone and she made a point of coming and presenting herself to the person who made the phone reservation. And it was my bday and she sought me out and was like "are u the bday girl?" And gave me and my BF delicious shots on the house. I wanna adopt her. Can I have her? Please? Also she is the sweetest - she set up the whole downstairs area for us (which we didn't end up using as we preferred to stay upstairs) and she wasn't even mad after setting up all those chairs for nothing. The restaurant has that beautiful classic Parisian atmosphere with outdoor seating, warm lights, and live music , which really set the mood and made our evening even more enjoyable. Of course, while in Paris, we had to try the escargot ! For our main dishes, we had the duck confit with potatoes, duck breast, chicken with green beans, and fish and chips. Everyone enjoyed their meals, and by the end, we were all so full that nobody had room for dessert! He chose it because of the reviews and also the fact that the seating area layout seemed to provide more space between tables than is sometimes the case. When we entered, a server directed us to the host station by the bar. My husband had printed out his email with the address & the reservation, and he had made some notes on it about things to consider on the menu. We were seated at a nice window table A woman did come right away to ask about sparkling or still water. Wines are by the glass--no bottles were listed that we saw. The server just stood over us for several minutes while we were looking at the menu, which was a little uncomfortable. So my husband explained we would need a few minutes. She seemed offended. Then the male host came over and insisted on seeing the paper my husband had with the email. He took it out of my husband's hand and started trying to read my husband's notes. I asked if there was a problem with the reservation--had they found it? The man said something about wanting to know if it was prepaid (do they do gift certificates in Paris? We had no idea what he meant). I said no, it was not, so he left again. The menu is prix fixe. A different server came to take our order. She was more upbeat and jovial. The amuse bouche was a pickled herring. I ordered the pumpkin veloute soup, which was yummy. Then I had the vegetarian plate, which was fine but not memorable: squash, mushrooms, and an egg on top. My husband ordered the sausage plate. At the end, I requested the check (l'addition"). The server asked twice if we wanted to add a tip to put on the card. I have not had that happen before in Paris, where the tipping conventions are different, and a 15% service charge is included in the prices by law. I asked if it was not included ("compris") and she said no, it was not. I did leave a cash tip. But all in all, some of those awkward moments with the staff detracted from the experience.

Our dinner lasted almost 3hours and that's not because we were slow but rather, the wait staff was missing. One party beside us left after about more than 45 mins of the waiter not showing up to get their orders. The restaurant itself was unique though. Where we sat looked like a library before with books all over the room. It could be that we came at a bad time, nonetheless, there's other restaurants in Paris to try before I come back to Le Fumoir.
