I rarely give 5 stars but my lunch here was perfection. It's everything I had wished La Tour d'Argent would be, but wasn't (which btw, I didn't bother reviewing because you should go there once in your life, just once). But l'Orangerie, I would love to go back to, again and again. I walked in with a small child in tow, off the street with no reservation and they couldn't have been nicer. The food was delicious and the service was IMPECCABLE. It was a three hour lunch delightfully spent. Oh, and did I mention you get to stare at a castle the whole time? They even had a delightful kids menu that was a surprise, as these type of restaurants tend to pretend children don't exist. But not this one, the kid food was still artfully presented while still being kid appropriate. Big bonus points for that.
Here's what I ate:
I had the least expensive prix fixe as I had a castle to visit after and was going for a lighter lunch (Hahahahah I ate so much anyway).
Orangerie Cocktail: delish, order it.
Amuses bouches: A whole tray of them from classic French (cucumbers in goat cheese) to sushi. An eclectic plate, that somehow worked.
A soup that preceded my app, I think it was an asparagus frothy soup. It was delightful and delicious.
App: A foie gras meant to look like a poached pear. It was cute and pretty much the best foie gras ever. Well played.
Entree: A white fish I (which, I can't remember) cooked perfectly. With mushrooms, carrot purée and scallions (whole ones, maybe). Devine. This might be the best fish I've ever had.
Cheese: I added the cheese course to my prix fixe for €5 because, DUH, never say no to the cheese cart.
Dessert: I chose the chocolate sphere which was gold dusted and over the top. It had a mouse and some kind of cake inside over a sesame candy stand which also had mousse in it. The caramel ice cream on the side was the best I've ever eaten, hands down. Dessert was also served with a tray of tiny little pastries. Omg so good, even tho I was already full.
Last but not least, I asked to have my meal paired with two wines. I didn't ask what they cost because I was enjoying my food so much and didn't care. Needless to say, I was ready for a nasty surprise when I got the bill. But no, they were not only great glasses of wine, but they were the most reasonably priced glasses of wine I've ever had at a nice restaurant. The wine tab was so low, I was confused. So, I stumbled into this gem, but you should plan a trip here. Eat outside, stare at the castle and then go take a stroll there to digest. What a wonderful afternoon. I can't wait to go back to Le Restaurant de L'Orangerie! read more
