Sometimes you find islands of a recent past in the center of this global city, visited by millions of tourists. This store, specialized in salted cod is one of those islands. Salted cod was the fish that was available the whole year and arrived everywhere, also to a places where fresh fish was just a word. I am talking of 50 years go, not that far. Also was a pretty affordable fish. But that changed when the mediatic chefs started to pay attention to this king of ingredients. Now salted cod is not that affordable, but once in a while I like to indulge with some esqueixada, a fresh salad made with tomato, olives and desalted salted cod. If you haven't tried it yet, you should. And you come here to get the salted cod. The couple running the store I bet have spent together they whole life, and at least 20-30 years in the store.
