Open market, lots of tourists! It was a nice stroll, the time we went seemed have a lot of stalls already closed for the day but we still managed to cruise around. Most stalls sold similar items. We did grab some oysters salty and unsalted. I preferred the salted one as it was less brinier. The lady liked the unsalted. It was 10euro for 4! They also had plenty of stalls with cured meats, cheeses, fresh squeezed juices, and like a fried outer dough with meat filling treats. I have no idea what they are called but we got some haha! Overall pretty chill spot, when we left and went out a back alleyway exit, there was some youngings one of which walked passed us then immediately turned and got super close following us. Not sure if they were filming pickpocket pranks or what but stand your ground and tell them off. Our only weird interaction really with possible pickpockets this trip that we noticed. read more

The famous Mercat La Boqueria! Came here to check it out since I didn't get the chance to go last time I was in Barcelona. Many of the stalls inside closed up already by the time I visited, ~5pm. There's a bunch of stalls selling pretty much the same things: seafood, fried seafood, jamon, fresh fruit, fruit juices, and empanadas. We ended up trying raw oysters, 10€ for 4 & chose half salted & half unsalted. I personally preferred the unsalted one though it was brinier. I heard great things about their fresh fruit juices. We visited this covered open air market on our last day in Barcelona before boarding our cruise ship. Our tour guide the previous day advised us to wait until around 10-1030 before arriving to ensure vendors were open. We heeded his advice and yet 1/3 of the stalls were either still setting up or had not yet arrived so be aware of this when visiting. The area has plenty of space for lots to walk and gather, though there isn't much space to sit down and eat. There are a plethora of food stalls, fresh juices, sweets, meats and more. We wandered up and down each aisle stopping when we saw something interesting. We tried pastries, olives, tacos, candies and flavored salts. Mercat la boqueria was a cool experience, but we definitely could have done without it on our trip to Barcelona. We walked over ready to try a bunch of food and were greeted with extreme crowds. We decided to proceed anyway as we heard it was a must when visiting the city. We initially tried iberico ham, which was really good! The serving size was pretty good, too! We also got a fruit juice from one of the vendors and honestly, I'm not sure what I expected but I wasn't a fan. It had chunks of fruit in it - which is probably normal but not for me. There were a ton of birds in and around the market. I'm terrified of birds so that was off-putting. Overall, not for me but glad I did it to say I did. read more

This place is way less crowded than other popular Mercato, and I like it that way. But there was less of the prepared sandwiches and stuff. You do need to purchase to use the bathroom (O you can just hover near the bathroom entrance waiting for someone else with a code - or someone leaving. The most impressive were the stalls selling the best prosciutto at unbelievable low prices. At home Serrano is highly valued over here they consider it common. The highest prosciutto comes from the Iberian Boar. Beautiful sliced and served with small slices of bread. It just melts in your mouth. The seafood stalls were selling a lot of shellfish. Mercat La Boqueria is a very busy marketplace that's a must-do while visiting Barcelona. We visited mid-day when locals were having a lunch break and tourists were wandering around. We wanted to eat here for lunch but it was so crowded that we opted for a jamon Ibérico snack and smoothie instead. Because it was so busy, we had to be cautious of pickpockets. My husband said that several times, he felt people tugging on the backpack. Thankfully, we were prepared for this part of traveling. When in Barcelona, you have to visit La Boqeria. Yeah, it's touristy but you're all the way out here in beautiful Spain! At least saunter through this busy market and marvel at all the attractive offerings here- everything from impressive seafood, meats, candies, fruits, sangria, wine, trinkets and more! I'm not big on the ham and prosciutto, but it's freshly shaved off the leg and usually offered with some cheese in a paper cone. It's quite filling- best to share. Indulging in some fresh seafood at one of the various bars with a glass of albarino was more my speed. If you need some snacks for the hotel room or some souvenirs, there's a great variety. It's easy to go overboard. If you go earlier, before 11, it is less crowded. It's very clean, and it's 1 Euro if you have to use the restroom. Sitting on the busiest street in Barcelona, this market is a tourist hot spot. Be warned, weekends will be unbelievably busy so set up your itinerary accordingly. Walking around for the first five minutes is fun, there are so many vendors and everything smells and looks great. After five minutes it begins to feel overwhelming, and some of the vendor offerings become repetitive. If you stop by I have a few tips to keep your visit enjoyable : - Try any of the seafood vendors and enjoy local oysters, 3 for 7 euro. - Grab a cone of jamon and cheese samples. This is a local snack so you have to try it once, right? - Drop by the bakery vendor (panaderia) and get a few delish treats to-go. This is located towards the center/back. - Thirsty? If you can manage to find a seat at one of the bars you can enjoy cocktails and tapas. You can find better prices elsewhere though. Safety tip : - Keep your valuables in your bag at all times, and keep your bag close. There will be many pick pockets in this area. No need to be spooked, just be smart. There are many covered markets in Barcelona, this one happens to be the most popular. So If you want to experience walking around a Spanish market without the overwhelming crowds, I suggest looking up all of the local Mercats. You will find them to be fairly similar. read more

The market's natural perimeter is dotted with sit-down cafes if you prefer to have table service. Organized, good variety, good atmosphere. It's a medium-sized market, with probably around 50 stores/stalls, perhaps larger than what most people have access to or have seen in the US though by far not huge compared to other markets in Spain or further abroad. Stands compromised of bakers, produce, dried/preserved foods and condiments, fresh produce to buy and eat there/take away, cheese and charcuterie, sweets and candies, fresh meat and seafood, prepared food--tapa/pintxos, cooked dishes, sandwiches, crepes, fried foods, etc. It's convenient for most visitors if they are staying around the area to get a taste of what local markets are like though for local specialty foods I agree that the prices here are higher than other markets. Depending on the time of day, there may be more shops open, by around 6:30pm some of the fresh produce, butchers, seafood vendors had closed shop--most of their business probably comes in the mornings. read more
