Well, Ames has another sit down Mexican restaurant. I think this one is actually owned and run by Mexicans. I hope they succeed where so many others continue to fail. This is a Tex-Mex restaurant. Native Texan here, check my oldest YELP reviews, people. Tex-Mex cuisine is different as cheese plays a more featured role than it does in Mexican cuisine, but unlike Americanized Mexican cuisine, it comes from Tejanos who are A) Hispanic and B) actually season their food. The customer service here is glorious! You definitely feel appreciated. The restaurant is spacious and clean, and they are keeping the number of dine in customers fairly low and spaced out. I've dined in once but lately have stuck to carry out. I think they were initially lax with masks, but were wearing them when I went in today. The food was delicious, and reminded me of Tex Mex fare back in Houston. The portions were large and the price was nice. The chips and salsa were fantastic! It tasted great even after the 30 minute drive home. I think I've found my regular Tex-Mex spot. WOW! It's both good and sad that I don't live in Ames, because if I did, I'd eat here ALL the time! One of the Mexican restaurants we've ever been to! Salsa was fresh and chips were good and crispy. I got the steak tacos on corn tortillas and beans. All so great! read more

I always appreciate good service and kindness, and that, combined with a really good meal is exactly what I received from La Casa Maya over Thanksgiving weekend. With plenty of parking and proximity to downtown Ames and Iowa State University, this restaurant has a spacious venue that is flexible for individuals, families, groups, and larger groups. A nearby table comfortably sat 14 for a birthday party without issues. I sensed it was a family-owned, independent restaurant and that made me even more pleased. Loved the guacamole, as it had a spicy twist to it. Homemade chips. My way better half enjoyed fajitas that she enjoyed. I ordered their Chori Pollo, which was recommended by our server (Reme), who nailed it! Loved the optics of the serving too. Full bar in one section of the restaurant, but it doesn't get in the way of the in-person dining experience. They do order pickups also. I'm returning, no doubt. read more

Just got into Ames for Farm Progress and wanted some Mexican food. Did a simple search for Mexican food on yelp and La Casa Maya came up. I had the Hidalgo street tacos which is chorizo and steak. Amazing. Great flavor and texture. La Casa Maya did not disappoint. Don't forget to ask for the hot hot salsa. Great pepper flavor and it sticks with you in a good way. My son and I dined here around 6pm on a Tuesday. The restaurant was moderately busy. The warm, homemade chips and red salsa were delicious. My son had the Quesadilla Birria dinner and I had the Taco Birria dinner (not on the menu). Both were very good, however I'd recommend ordering a side of the Birria consomé with the tacos as they were served without any. The quesadilla dinner came with a large serving of consomé with a large piece of tender roast beef floating inside, which we shared. The pre-made house margarita was OK, but not great. Spend a few more bucks for a premium margarita. The service was OK, but a little pokey when it came time to get the check and pay. I'd recommend this restaurant to someone looking for good Mexican food in Ames. read more

I've been here a couple times now, only to get take out. They do follow social distancing and masking guidelines, but I witnessed many diners without masks coming and going in the short time I sat at the front, waiting for my take outs. See pics. I've gotten the Iowa burritos, the lunch enchiladas and one other dish(I can't remember what it was) and all of it was great. The meals come with chips and salsa. The taste is FRESH. The place is clean. The staff is friendly. They have an outdoor patio for warmer weather. The prices are good. And, as per my pics, there's much more food and better quality food than the $7 TacoJohns enchiladas, for about the same cost. Was just in there for lunch with my family and I was outraged at the service in this establishment. Now I'm not knocking the food by no means cause it was incredibly delicious this is just a bad review for the customer service we received. Upon entering we were seated right away and were brought out fresh warm chips and salsa, our server took our drink order and that's where the service ends. We got our drinks and told her we needed just a couple of minutes to look over the menu, 15 minutes later she comes back and takes our order. While we waited for the food to arrive we ran out of drinks and I literally had to raise my voice to get her attention so we could get refills. One thing I hate is asking for refills, serving 101 is making sure your customer always has a full glass. After about 30 minutes our food arrives but it arrives in bits and pieces, I got fajitas but no tortillas, my husband order 2 chix and 1 beef flautas and only got chix, meanwhile my son didn't even get his food and he ordered street tacos the simplest of all our orders IMO. My youngest got nuggets and fries and the nuggets were burnt. So we waited again for about 10 minutes before a gentleman that wasn't our server comes over and says my sons tacos will be out soon. Our server didn't even have enough guts to come over and admit that she forgot to put in my sons order she sends someone over to do her dirty work.When asked what was taking so long with my sons food they just simply shrugged their shoulders and walked away. We again ran out of drinks and again had to ask for refills. We only seen our server once the whole time we were there and that was to take care of our bill and see what kind of tip she was getting, well needless to say she got nothing because why should I tip you if you can't get refills, forgot to put in my sons order, and very clearly neglect our table. I hate not tipping but sometimes it's just that bad and this was one of those times. Food was great wish I could have given her tip to the cooks. A very large (enough for 2) Beef, chicken shrimp fajita served in a split in1/2 half scooped-out pineapple and several tortillas very thin and delicious-the best in town-and beans and rice with quad lettuce side. read more
