I stopped here on my way through Ames Iowa. It's just a small store front and restaurant. Service was friendly and the food was good. I would recommend this place for an easy meal.

If you're looking for the best, authentic Mexican food in Ames than look no further than Rinconcito. The restaurant and store are tucked away in the Northern Lights shopping center. Us old-timers know it as the location where Valentino's once was. The Valentino's green booths still remain. When you walk into the restaurant, you proceed to the menu board to order your food. The menu board is bright and easy to read. If you're confused by the options, I'd suggest asking questions as this isn't the typical "Mexican" fare like other Ames establishments serve. This is the real stuff. The food itself is absolutely delicious and made to order. On our latest visit, I ordered the Birria Taco's. Talk about packing a punch of flavor. There are three tacos (with brisket), rice, grilled veggies and enough birria dipping sauce to feed a small village. My wife ordered the Burrazo with steak and nodded her approval multiple times as she enjoyed her food. Neither of us were able to eat the entire meal, as the portion sizes are huge. A third person in our party ordered steak quesadillas with no onions. When the dish was served, there was worry that the quesadilla was LOADED with onions, but upon further inspection the staff made the speciality order to perfection. I should also comment on the amazing, fresh salsa bar. There are a number of different salsas with varying degrees of heat to suit every palate. We will certainly be back for the food, but I remain intrigued by the other offerings. The store side continues to expand with new, unique items. Also, Rinconcito now sells beer. I was able to confirm with store employees that they also make homemade michelada mix. Perfect for a hot summer day! In summary, Rinconcito is the top Mexican restaurant in Ames if you're looking for no frills, but authentic Mexican flavors.

I was expecting a sit down restaurant with table service, but it's very much an extension of the food truck Tacos El Primo. The food was pretty great and there's a little market next to the restaurant. It's a nice place for legitimate Mexican culture and food in Ames, Iowa of all places.

Great food. We tried sopes, torta, and a taco. The items did not disappoint. I am excited to try other food items during future visits.

Food is great and authentic fire birria fire burritos fire tacos! Service is polite and patient and the ambiance is pleasant and music is lively

This is a Tex-Mex restaurant. Native Texan here, check my oldest YELP reviews, people. Tex-Mex cuisine is different as cheese plays a more featured role than it does in Mexican cuisine, but unlike Americanized Mexican cuisine, it comes from Tejanos who are A) Hispanic and B) actually season their food. The customer service here is glorious! You definitely feel appreciated. The restaurant is spacious and clean, and they are keeping the number of dine in customers fairly low and spaced out. I've dined in once but lately have stuck to carry out. I think they were initially lax with masks, but were wearing them when I went in today. The food was delicious, and reminded me of Tex Mex fare back in Houston. The portions were large and the price was nice. The chips and salsa were fantastic! It tasted great even after the 30 minute drive home. I think I've found my regular Tex-Mex spot. What I liked most were the seasonings and sauciness - well balanced and no one aspect was overpowering. It also looked so pretty! Get at the tamales!!!

The food is good and authentic. Took a friend who knows Colombian food well and this guy is doing it just like they do down there. I've never had arepas so good. We had the reinas pepiadas: really really tasty. I could see how some people are a little alienated by him, but also remember that he's there alone. You can go a little off the rails at places that have more people on staff to manage those kinds of patrons. When you walk in, you know that you can't push beyond what's offered and make special requests.
