If you're looking for a place that feels authentic, laid-back, and full of Puerto Rican culture, Piñones is definitely worth a visit.

Colorful cement houses with some only partially built or partially remaining after previous hurricane damage. It's an interesting contrast to the beautiful historic buildings of Old San Juan that it bumps up against with a several hundred year old wall separating them. There are a few bars along the main road thru La Perla, but it's not very safe for tourists as night. It would be much wiser to go to the bars in Old San Juan only a block or two away.

Old San Juan is a must visit. It doesn't matter how many times you've been here. There's always…read moresomething new to discover. You may even rediscover a part of your past... like I did. It's a timeless Spanish Colonial town filled with charming old-world atmosphere, tropical settings, and tasty treats. It's truly a very walkable city. You just need to know what you want to see and how to get there. Those with mobility issues may need to map out a route with less of an incline. There's a free trolley in the city that used to be very reliable. My mom was very happy to see it during her very last pre-pandemic trip back to the island. I didn't see any of them this time around. Although, that might have been because of the Ironman race. The traffic looping through this part of the city is already bad enough. The roads being blocked off for marathons & festivities make it more difficult to get around. I hope they can improve transportation services for both locals & tourists alike. This is why walking around town is highly recommended. We originally wanted an Uber drop off at Plaza del Quinto Centenario. The roads were blocked off so we ended up at Plaza Colon on the east side. It turned out to be a good starting point as we made our way to Paseo de la Princesa. On our way, we just happened to spot a café-lined public square with a statue of a famous Puerto Rican composer named Arturo Somohano. I would definitely stop here for coffee if ever on a short shore excursion. It's close to the port, yet it's hidden by the Hotel Rumbao. There's also a Starbucks in this square. But, I must tell you. The highlight of our most recent visit was walking along the Princess Promenade and the fortified walls of the city to the San Juan Gate. I know a lot of people go to the forts (El Morro & San Cristóbal), and you should if you've never seen them. It's just that this southwestern part of OSJ wins my heart every time. It's a beautiful nature walk with many landmarks such as La Fortaleza, La Casa Blanca, Pigeon Park, and Paseo del Morro. There's a cat park as well and many garita viewpoints along the wall on your way to El Morro. All with great coastal views. It was also great to visually trace our steps the following evening when leaving on our 7-Day cruise from the Pan American Pier. That whole area along the promenade leading to the San Juan Gate and El Morro is lit up at night. The entire town sparkles when viewing it from the mouth of the bay. It's a beautiful sight that will always be remembered. A great beginning & ending point to any cruise.

It was our last full day in Puerto Rico, and we really wanted to have a great beach day. To use…read morethis beach, you have to go through a gated entrance and pay four dollars to park. From that point on, it doesn't cost you anything unless you choose to spend money. It's a short walk from the parking lot to the beach. We had gotten there early, and decided to rent an umbrella and a pair of lounge chairs, which cost us $35 for the day. Considering we ended up spending nearly 7 hours on the beach, it was definitely worth the purchase price. The beach is gorgeous, and the water is rock free. It did get quite busy, but we actually enjoyed the people watching. There are vendors that walk up and down the beach, selling ice, creams and drinks, but there are also little Kioskos on the property that you can walk to easily to order hot food. At the one we visited, we got delicious slushy's, Pinchos, and empanadillas that were all delicious. We had a great time, and would absolutely go back in a heartbeat! When you leave the gated parking lot, you are literally around the corner from the Luquillo kioskos if you want to hit them up for shopping or dinner after your beach day. Makes things super convenient!

Some more info about this spot/Place- this spot is on Route 187 between Isla Verde and the Rio Grande. means - if you are planning to Visit Playa Flamenco (which is a Must do- cause it is one of the top beaches in the world) and if you are coming back to San Juan to catch a flight then I would suggest taking this route 187. a couple of reasons for this- 1) Pinones area which is famous for its street/roadside small/decent food joint - you don't wanna miss if you are a foodie 2) Scenic Route 3) You wanna save money on toll skipping Route-66 (no sense paying rental company for its transponder and $10/day)

I enjoyed exploring the fort and taking in the scenery from the massive stone walls. Admission is reasonably priced at $10 per adult and includes access to both Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo San Cristóbal for 24 hours, making it a great value if you plan to visit both forts. One of the things I found most interesting is how much there is to explore throughout El Morro's different levels. The iconic garitas (sentry boxes) offer some of the best views and are a symbol of PR. The main plaza gives a glimpse into daily life inside the fort, while the lighthouse continues to guide ships into the harbor today. The Santa Bárbara Battery sits right at water level, where cannons once defended San Juan Bay, and the floating staircase connects the fort's levels. I ended up buying a few hot sauces from the gift shop before leaving. My biggest recommendation is to start your day early if you want to see both castles the same day because they close a bit early. There's far more to explore than you might expect, and having access to both forts makes for a full day of adventure history, views, and plenty of walking.

The beach has an expansive sandy shoreline, which could have you taking a stroll along the beach for 30 minutes + in either direction. I thoroughly enjoyed swimming and sunbathing here, along the pristine turquoise waters. Watching little fish swimming by right at my feet was so relaxing and refreshing to see. Our hotel luckily provided us with beach chairs and a cooler, which came in very handy, as there wasn't an option to rent beach chairs or an umbrella. So, please do keep this in mind when visiting this gorgeous beach !!!
