I have to say that this was my favorite experience of our recent visit to Old San Juan. It's just a beautiful walk that starts near Calle del Recinto Sur at the end of the fort wall. You'll immediately see a tree and lantern lined street with many local vendors and benches. I'm not sure if they're set up there on a daily basis or not. We saw them on a Saturday morning. You'll eventually get to the promenade called Bastion de la Derecha de San Justo y Pastor. This is where you'll find the American Heritage Plaza, Children's Park, Princess Garden, and the old prison that is now a tourism company. The real draw is the Raices Fountain and the beautiful view of the ocean & fortified walls. But, it doesn't end there. The promenade continues on along the fortress wall that leads you to a very bizarre park with a public artwork by Carmen Inés Blondet called Crecimiento ("Growth"). Honestly, I thought it was some kind of historical spiked barrier to ward off enemies. It's definitely interesting to see. It's a beautiful walk that takes you under the Garita del la Fortaleza which is actually where I snapped a great picture of the San Juan Gate during one of our previous visits. We knew at that point that we were close to the prize. The Puerta de San Juan presented itself to us. It's a beautiful sight to see. There's a small pier as well as a park that is dedicated to Isabella I of Castile. She's a very significant figure in the discovery of Puerto Rico. At this point, you can choose to walk through the gate to connect to the old convent and cathedral or walk along Paseo del Morro. Just keep in mind that there is construction going on right now on the castle path. This means that you'll have to turn back around and exit at the gate. The reopening of this path is something to look forward to in the future. It's a nice way to see El Morro from a different perspective. It was time worth spent on a cool & breezy Saturday morning with lots to see along the way. A great relaxing walk for residents and travelers alike. read more

It has nice views of the bay, shaded areas, fountains, and often local vendors and food stands along the way. During my visit to Old San Juan I got to experience the Saturday outside market. Where I got to purchase a delicious bacalaito and old school Puerto Rican candies to take home and an ice cold passion fruit drink. During the walk I took great photos of the fountain and the scenery it's so beautiful. The view from old San Juan is breathtaking and I can't wait to visit again. read more

I always like coming down here when I'm in Old San Juan. For one, it's across from La Puntilla, the parking lot I usually park at. This is where the San Juan wall ends, which makes for a cool scenery. The promenade is nice, safe, and family friendly. There's a children's park here, Parque del Niño, as well as the Jardín de la Princesa and an open air gym. There's usually several local arts and crafts vendors. The restaurant Princesa is down here, which is pretty good. The Puerto Rico Tourism company's building is down here. It used to be a jailhouse. The promenade takes you to a fountain and if you keep going you'll stroll along the waterfront and end at the Puerta de San Juan. From here you can enter the city or continue on Paseo del Morro which will take you to the base of El Morro. read more

My family and I walked this beautiful promenade during our time in San Juan. We walked it on our tour after leaving the Antigua Prision De La Princesa, the old prison which now ironically serves as the headquarters for the tourism company of Puerto Rico. The promenade is stunningly beautiful, you can enjoy walking next to the water and get a view of San Juan. You can see the breathtaking Fuente Raices, which is a gorgeous fountain. The paseo is wide with plenty of room for lots of people to walk, and has ornate streetlights. The Paseo de la Princesa extends for a quarter mile along the southern city walls of Old San Juan. The promenade itself dates to 1853. It was created originally to be used by the Spanish military as an area to provide clear fields of fire for the cannons and guns that were located outside of the city walls. What was first meant to cause death and destruction, is now meant for leisure and relaxation. I call that progress! It was an enjoyable respite during our tour of San Juan. read more

I agree, this is a must see for all visiting this area. Take a leisurely stroll through this promenade. There are little park like areas off to the side, such as the children's park. Beautiful greenery on one end, with staues of course, and an interesting playground on the opposite end of this little side park. There are more staues along the way as well as a huge fabulous tree decorated with lights. It looks impressive during the day and absolutely gorgeous after dark. There is a restaurant and an outdoor bar along the way, as well as a tourist information center. But the highlight awaits you as you near the end towards the ocean. A breathtaking fountain is the highlight here. Of course there is also the ocean in the background, but this fountain is stunning. Make sure you go around it and admire all the lovely details. read more

We didn't get as much time to spend here as we hoped, but as other reviews have stated it is a must if you find yourself in Old San Juan. San Juan themselves claim this to be the 'most beautiful promenade in San Juan. You can stroll along the boardwalk and see the history of the city while checking out what the various street vendors have to offer. As other reviews have indicated they have security out and about, so there was never a time that we didn't feel safe while we were in this area. In fact, one of the security guards gave me some advice/tips on parking that were a life saver. The residents of San Juan seem to take great pride in their history and it's fully on display here. When you visit, take some time to check this place out. read more

this is a path long the coast that included on the way the gates of San Juan and ended by the Morro fort. this was a very beautiful walk as well as pretty warm, super hot actually, bring water, I cant stress it enough. there are no vendors along this walk and it is a pretty long one. I saw a bunch of lizards and other animals on the way as well as some cats and areas where the cats are fed. it was a super awesome experience and a beautiful and scenic one as well. along the coast you can also see the Bacardi distillery a far and on the pass side the el Morro walls some old looking and some newer and revamped. I would say to do this walk well hydrated or wait ti a cooler day to do the entire track, but none the less it is a must if you are in San Juan. read more

This is a little park area just off the main street and along the waterfront. There are statues and historical sites here. We expected to see a lot of damage after the Hurricane hit there but, the city has done a marvelous job of cleaning up so you can not even tell. If you have time when you visit, make sure you also take the walk along the waterfront. It is spectacular. read more

The promenade is on the south side of Old San Juan, very close to the cruise ships dock, Plaza de Hostos and Plaza Darcenas. The historic area has been restored and is a great place to walk with its tree-lined pathway. There are artisan selling their goods and local food vendors selling bacalito, alcapurria, piragua, and pina coladas (note: non-alcoholic). La Princesa was a prison in the 1800s, and the building is now the Puerto Rico Tourism Company. When you visit, make sure to take time to look at the fountain at the end of the promenade. The fountain speaks to the cultural heritage and diversity of the Puerto Rican people. You can see amazing views of San Juan Bay and the Isla de Cabras. You'll see the walls of the city and San Juan Gate. Takeaway: there are many photo ops at Paseo de la Princesa. read more

Paseo de la Princesa (Promenade of the Princess) is an outdoor promenade pathway along the southern tip of Old San Juan. At it's heart is the San Juan Tourism Company. Lots of local festivities and cultural events are held here, and displays are constantly changing (when we were here, they had incredible, poster-sized photos up of various world phenomenons. Very captivating). A stroll through the promenade is a must - you'll find locals mingling with tourists, Piragua carts (snow cone), and fresh squeezed China juice (orange) - if you keep along the path, you'll hit the Old San Juan bay - further down you'll hit the famous Red Door - hundreds of years ago, when soldiers ported, they would rush to the Red Door to touch it and say a prayer of thanks that they survived. You can keep on your stroll or enter the Red Door, which will eventually take you up to the San Juan Church (where Jennifer Lopez got married). Pretty incredible. read more

Paseo de la Princesa is a beautiful esplanade/promenade and park that makes for romantic evening strolls, historical learning and cultural connections, and also a beautiful view of the ocean. Sunset here is beautiful, and is easy to get to from the downtown area of OSJ. Plaza de hosts and Plaza darcenas are not too far away either. Loved this area of PR! read more

Such a peaceful place to stroll. There's a huge fountain depicting symbolism from PR's history... If you keep going past the red door that leads to the city (and famous church), all the way to the end, you'll arrive at a breathtaking spot where you see the bay, the Atlantic Ocean and the bottom part of El Morro Fort. Along the way you'll see a cat here and there sun bathing, snoozing or grooming... One sunny morning a group of dolphins was playing and splashing just a few hundred feet away! What an amazing way to start the day! Some days there's an artisans' fair featuring all kinds of handmade goods and food kiosks. Security is always on patrol - they're very friendly and eager to help with directions. read more

I have gone to Puerto Rico numerous of times, and I always love to walk down El Paseo De La Princesa! By the time you are done walking it, you will end up by the beautiful ocean and it's honestly an amazing view! If you walk back you will look at the historic "El Morro" and end up looking at beautiful garitas and the beautiful big red door of San Juan--The last door up after a war!!-- A lot of history and makes me a proud Rican! #wepa ! read more

Nice Stroll Through Historic Sites. Took a nice walk on my own (no tours) on the Paseo one Saturday late afternoon into the evening end of July. There were many Kiosks around with local food everywhere, and artisans, even live music by the small plaza facing the pier. You will get to a beautiful water fountain called Roots Fountain or "Raices Fountain", beautiful collection of bronze statues seems to be honoring Puerto Rico's mixed culture of African, Spanish and Taino/Amerindian heritage. If you keep going pass the fountain, the path continues bordering the Spanish Wall or " La Muralla" by the water and even passing the "Puerta de San Juan". From La Puerta you can either continue to walk in old San Juan or head up to the Spanish Fort "El Morro". Filled with rich culture to explore around, this is a great place to see multiple-landmarks close to one another to go visit and see. There is plenty parking and cheap, by the entrance of the Paseo, called "La Puntilla Parking". Of course it is the tropics so you can expect rain at any moment so be aware and prepared! :-) But overall it is great for a very relaxing or even romantic walk. read more

This is the best area to park in to see Old San Juan. There is a huge parking area by the Coast Guard Station, it wound up being about 3 dollars to park there for several hours. The Puerto Rico Tourism Company office is here - definitely go in even you dont need help, because you can check out the old jail in the back. Then you can walk out, check out the fountain and head over to see the red door and walk along the wall while the cats sit out on the rocks overlooking the bay. Great spot. read more
