We had several types of pizza and all of them were fantastic. The tiramisu was also excellent. Barbara was our waitress and she was exceptionally friendly. We will definitely come back here several more times during our vacation! read more

I'm an American living in Monteverde for several months and Dolci Desideri is one of my favorite things about Rome. The coffee and daily pastries are pretty affordable, like you would find all over Rome, for a euro or less. The bigger tarts and cakes and so forth can get a bit pricey, but I think they're generally worth it.

This is no ordinary pizza place, it's a forno, which is Italian for oven. Naturally, someone here looked at the bread, looked at the toppings, and said, Yes, this shall be pizza now. We kicked things off with the Margherita, the classy queen of pizzas, literally. Named after Queen before Italy decided to liberate itself, this was your classic tomato-mozzarella-basil situation. Red, Green and White like the Italian Flag. Regal. Nostalgic. Tastes like a monarchy that actually works. Then came the potato pizza, which, let me tell you, was a surprise carb ambush. Like, Oh cute, a slice of starch on starch. Bread with potatoes on it. For when your body is craving a food coma. And then came the Marinara, my personal Roman romance. No cheese, all attitude. Spicy, saucy, simple. Like that one ex who was too intense but kind of unforgettable. Let's talk style: Roman pizza is not your floppy Neapolitan mess that folds into a pizza burrito the moment it hits your plate. No no, Roman pizza stands its ground. It's a little thicker and definitely crunchier. You don't need to roll it, cradle it, or whisper encouragement. It just is. And I love it more than I probably should. La Renella is where bread goes to find its higher purpose which is to be pizza.

Naturally, Farinando stays open at lunchtimes and if pizza by the slice isn't your thing, you can also get small snack pizzas and even a porchetta sandwich. The confectioner's counter is pretty good too - lots of biscuits and cakes on offer here, although the prices are high. Excellent seasonal products can be found here however, especially at Easter and Christmas. The handsome fridges at the back are also full of milk and other food items so it works as an emergency shopping spot in case you run out of pasta or Nutella. I found out about Palmieri when they delivered several cakes and pastries to a local restaurant my group was visiting. I jotted down the bakery name, and we made it a point to seek them out. They are located very close to the Vatican metro stop, in the interior courtyard of a building. Look for a small bronze plate with their name on the outside. Pasticceria Palmieri bakes some of the best Italian classics that I've had the pleasure to try from them. So far I've sampled their cannoli, tiramisu, and a phyllo custard pastry. During their busiest hours they are constantly baking and serving these massive pizzas. Get there early in the day, as the line gets unruly and overwhelming during meal hours. Of course, you have to balance this with the fact that you normal (devour as fresh as possible!). There is a numbered ticket machine, but the place is small and the locals love to crowd it. Being able to speak Italian is a plus, as you can get details on what's on the pizza (sometimes the green is kale, sometimes it spinach or broccoli), and it makes it much easier to get multiple slices and different kinds (I had to make up a great deal of hand gestures). Another tip: ordering is one room, paying is in a smaller room to the right of the main entrance. Finally, considering the quality of what you get, the price is amazing. Do check it out: if you enjoy pizza, you will probably keep finding excuses to return to the ghetto!
