Absolutely gorgeous. I wish I could have spent a little more time here, but alas we tried to do a three-cave tour with the Arecibo observatory, and didn't get here until 4:30 PM. Even though the caves are technically only open until 5:00 PM, they don't kick people out until 5:30 PM. Make sure you wear a good pair of shoes, as some of the exposed limestone is really sharp and hard to walk on. You pay $5 (by far, the least expensive and most worth it out of all of the caves), and park in their lot. There are lots of pull-offs on the walking path where you can stop and admire the ocean and crashing waves, but keep going for the main attraction! When you get to where the cave is, a guide will briefly tell you about the lay of the land, but then you're on your own. The cave is to the left, and the arch and beach is to the right. You go down on some wooden steps, and then you're free to look around and crawl on rock and through holes as you please. Make sure to take a look at the gorgeous petroglyphs here. I've read that they pre-date Columbus' arrival in 1493! Incredible! They started kicking people out of the right side because the waves were too strong, but we were able to take a look. The waves and the rock here is breathtaking. A tip is to check the tide schedules in the area and avoid high tide, so that you can fully explore the cave and petroglyphs. Very beautiful, although going to the cave is VERY dangerous, jagged rocks, big openings on they way to the cave etc.., also don't wear any sandals or shorts, closed shoes and closed clothing for the rocks. read more

The view itself was beautiful! To get to the cave you walk across jagged rocks. Be sure to wear tennis shoes. Since this is Puerto Rico the safety precautions you would see in the states do not apply here. There is a wooden ladder that takes you down a good 20 feet at least. You have to walk along the cliff to get to the ladder and there are no rails to hold on to as you walk to the ladder. So a little slip you fall ... way down. Since I am clumsy I didn't chance it and waited for my family while they went down. They said it was pretty cool and probably one of their favorite sights in Puerto Rico. Too bad for me I'm too careful but that's okay. :) Though where I was it was sure gorgeous sight to see. read more

5 stars for the view, and the carvings inside the caves. The Tainos enjoyed a beautiful island before it was taken from them. This spot is beautiful! My problem is with the people charging for access to the cave. This site is owned by the people of Puerto Rico. As such, it should be available for everyone to enjoy. Especially for its educational value. However, some hecklers are taking advantage. They use the excuse that it is their property, and they will charge you whatever they feel like (because it is not advertised) to walk through 'their property'. I was charged $25 or $5 a person to walk through. This is not ethical. It gave me a bad impression. If the money was going back to fund the upkeep and preservation of the site I would not be writing this. But, I know the money is going into the pocket of some greedy individual taking advantage of something beautiful. Something that should be enjoyed by all who care about the history of the Tainos. While it was a neat experience to see the LA Cueva del Indio and the breathtaking views I couldn't help but leave disappointed. There should be some kind of regulation against private citizens benefitting from a national site. read more

I realize that the paid parking ($5 per person) May seem a little inconvenient, but the staff there was cordial and courteous and gave us information on where to go and want to see. After spending almost 2 hours there and visiting the caves and bridges along the jagged coast, we felt that it was well worth the price. They had ice water for sale as well where we parked. Absolutely beautiful! I didn't mind paying the $5/ person, it was worth it to me. CAUTION though- I got STUNG by something (fire coral maybe?) swimming in the pool in the cave. My leg brushed up against a rock and I felt a stinging sensation which later turned into a bad allergic reaction and intense muscle pain lasting several days. Just be careful if you go swimming in the cave. read more

This is an easy to find location using the YELP app. We were greeted by a friendly owner/employee, Miguel La Fontaine. He is very passionate about the Taino history and the caves here. He had lots of ideas for us for our next stop to see something cool. Once you get your directions from him, you set off to find the cave. It can be frightening for some, but don't let fear stop you from going down the ladder. It was one of the most incredible sites I've seen concerning indigenous art. The Taino have left petroglyphs all over these caves. The beauty of the seven arches and the Atlantic are just icing on the cake. Afterwards, we had the pleasure of talking with Jorge, and purchasing some of his handmade art. He is a wealth of knowledge as to the PreColumbian history. It's a great stop. I don't recommend little kids or anyone who is physically disabled, as the coastline is made up of jagged rock, and the descent into the cave is by ladder. read more

The cave itself isn't that exciting, cool rickety ladder to get down there, but after you're there, it's a small space with not so impressive carvings. The site to see is the view off the limestone cliffs though. We had so much fun walking around and finding the best photo ops. Definitely. It for the super young, the old, or the handicapped. Super rough terrain, very uneven and steep. Definitely wear tennis shoes and bring a camera. Parking area is a little sketch, but totally worth the $5 entrance fee so we didn't have to worry about our cars or getting lost. read more

As the other review mentioned, we found about this place on tripadvisor, and the drive out there from San Juan was well worth it. My husband is Puerto Rican and has visited his homeland a many times, but have not known about this place until we went there for our honeymoon and was googling for things to do. Seeing the petroglyphs and hearing about Taino/spaniard history was saddening but informative. The view around the cave is incredible and as the tour guide would tell you, many movies were filmed there. I hope that either the owner or the department of natural resources could do more to preserve the cave and ensure no one else add their own carving to this historic sanctuary. Definitely wear good walking shoes and sunblock! We would've stayed to enjoy the view longer if not for the intense sun cooking us. read more

One of the best caves in Puerto Rico! A few minutes away from the Arecibo Lighthouse, def make a stop at La Cueva del Indio. WARNING it is NOT an easy trek/ hike in that you are walking on sharp jagged rocks. For a better experience, please be aware that this is not for everyone, and be sure to wear shoes! Neat place. Definitely worth visiting and walking east down the coast to see the arches and dramatic coastline. If you can, park free south of the entrance and enter from the road. They try to charge $5 per person to park on private property adjoining the site, but the site itself is free to visit. Just wish they'd advertise that fact. read more

This is a cave located right on the beach that is a must see! I am a bit scared of heights and it was nerve wracking to be on the edge of the cliff when it was so windy but worth it! There is a ladder you can use to go down into the cave. It was the scariest thing I did while in Puerto Rico but I am so glad my husband insisted I do it! I really loved the experience. I recently saw this exact location at the end of the new Netlflix movie with Adam Sandler "The Do Over", that was pretty cool! read more

I honestly don't see the appeal here. It's kind of neat, sure, but from all the 4 and 5 star reviews I expected something fantastic. These great reviews merely set me up for great disappointment. Oddly enough, we had absolutely no problem spotting the sign and getting here. Everybody seems to claim that is the difficult part. The sign is very obvious and you should have no problem seeing it. We appeared to be the first people here for the day and so we paid the man our $3 and were ready to have an awesome time at this cave! He told us to turn at the sign and look for a red flag. We turned at the sign and continued along the path for quite some time before it dumped us out further up the highway. We backtracked for a while before finding ourselves on a nice beach where we admired the sights and tide pools before heading back into the jungle. Eventually we came out again near the sign and after looking about I perceived what appeared to be a pinkish-white faded bit of torn clothing hanging off a stick stuck into a hole farther up in the rocks. It resembled a red flag in as much as much as a chihuahua resembles a puli. The climb up the rock dome isn't very difficult, but if you have any balance issues or small children then you may want to reconsider, as the dome is collapsed in many areas and there are holes easily big enough to fall through. The "staircase" is no issue as long as you are in any form of decent shape but again those not fit for it should stay back. The area offered some fantastic views and I feel it was worth the $3 just for them. I would like to mention however that if you come here expecting an awesome time learning about the history and archaeology of the native Taino people as I did, then you will not have a good time. There are a couple of neat carvings but the site is really almost destroyed and not worth putting any significant archaeological interest into. I guess to someone who hasn't seen anything of the sort before it could be slightly more interesting, but I kind of doubt it except for perhaps small children which as I said will probably not be able to make it there. Skip this place unless you feel like paying a few bucks for some nice pictures. read more
