The restaurant is in the middle of town within a few blocks to the main town square. The menu has pictures of the nunnery attire, maybe how they brewed their own beer? They only had it in Dutch, no English menu. Food: 3/5. Bland food, which is not uncommon for Flemish cuisine, but meat was also quite tough. We tried the 2 most popular dishes, Brochette Oud Clooster, and Rundsstoverij met Westmalle Dubbel, and were not impressed. Both bland. The brochette was supposed to be medium rare but came out well done. Dry and tough. The dipping sauce has a hint of curry but wasn't enough to carry the whole dish. The stew has a yummy base, I could pick out the beer flavors (Belgians truly have the best beers in the world). Meat pieces were tough, which is a shame given this is a stew. They should have use a fattier cut of beef like chuck. Meme Gusta has a similar but much more flavorful Flemish stew. The no-bake cheese cake was light and refreshing. Good for 1 person, small to share between 2. Service: 2/5. They had no English menu. At this point I have come to Belgium enough to pick out a few familiar terms, but I would have liked to be able to see what other dishes they had. Had to aggressively flag down waiter whenever we needed something. they also charge €1.80 for tap water. This place is popular enough even for locals that one can't get in without reservations. We were told they only have 2 slots: 6-8 or 8-10. We picked the earlier one. The restaurant was only half full until about 7.

What we ordered: Cheddar Croquettes (2 for 14 Euros): Just ok and this was one of the things that I felt was overpriced Carpaccio of Smoked Beef with White Truffle Oil (18 Euros): Again, just ok Meatloaf with "Jack Pepper" sauce (26 Euros): "Jack Pepper" means something different in Brussels. It was basically a peppercorn gravy. I wasn't a fan, but Jim G. enjoyed it. With this, we had frites and a small side salad. I know many people recommend that Flemish Beef Stew, but we already had that at Fin de Siecle, and I couldn't imagine that any place would top it, so we didn't get it here. Ultimately, this place isn't for me, but I seem to be in the minority.

This is near his home and he had heard good things about it. It is tucked away in a neighborhood and situated in what looked to have been a former residence. We were seated right away because of having reservations. It was quite busy for a Monday night, partially due to a work celebration that involved quite a few people. They occupied quite a bit of the moderate-sized dining area. Nonetheless, the atmosphere was conducive to a nice meal. The service was likewise terrific as our wait person attended to us quickly. The team did a great job all night. The highlight was the menu. The creativity and combinations were nothing like what I've found at any other restaurant in the past. There were European options and Japanese options, all of which sounded extraordinarily tempting. For starters, there was a small charcuterie board with bread, crostinis, salami and tomato chutney already on the table. The chutney was excellent. We augmented the starter repertoire with calamari that was also extremely well done. My colleague and I both chose the Gyoza dinner for our mains. This came with 12 pieces accompanied by a salad and rice. It was outstanding. I also must compliment their wine selection, as the Malbec they offered was one of the best I've had in some time. The prices were not inexpensive, but yet were commensurate with the quality of the fare. With all included, our final bill was €129 for the two of us, which was about $143 with the exchange rate at the time. At $71.50 per person, it was not cheap, but was also well worth the quality of the fare. Overall, I was quite happy with my experience at this restaurant. He reminded us of a combination of Neil Fak (from The Bear) and Lazlow (from What We Do in the Shadows). A two-top opened up inside and Julian was concerned that it would be too hot, so he made me go inside to check first.
