Los Angeles Conservancy is a nonprofit organization with a mission to preserve the historic places…read morein Los Angeles. They offer weekly and monthly architecture / history walking tours in Downtown LA with few seasonal tours. [Weekly Saturday tours]: Historic Downtown, Broadway Historic Theatre and Commercial District, Art Deco, and Union Station. [Monthly Saturday tours]: Angelino Heights, Modern Skyline, and The Biltmore Hotel lobby. *** Historic Downtown Walking Tour - each Saturday at 9:45 AM *** [Parking]: Option #1 (shorter walk) is the Pershing Square underground garage (532 S. Olive Street, Los Angeles, 90013) - $9 all day on weekends. 2nd option (longer walk) is the Westlawn Garage at Central Library (524 S. Flower Street) - discount is offered to Los Angeles Public Library card holders (parking validation is available at the library's Information Desk on the first floor). I only paid $1 at the Westlawn Garage with parking validation ($1.00 flat rate - validation still apply even if visitors come before 9:30 AM). [Special notes]: Arrive at least ten minutes early to check in. Tour meets at the center of Pershing Square near the mini-groves of Orange trees. The tour was supposed to start at 9:45 AM, but everyone arrived at 9:30 AM so our tour had an early start. [Price]: $25 per adult. $18 per youth (17 years and under). [Duration]: Our tour started at 9:30 AM and ended at 12 PM. The starting point was Pershing Square and the ending point was behind The Bradbury Building. All tours are led by volunteers. [Experience]: The tour mainly focuses on discussing beaux-arts vs art deco buildings. Our group walked into 5 different buildings including PacMutual Building, Los Angeles Public Library, The CalEdison, Grand Central Market, and The Bradbury Building (aka known from the 1982 movie Blade Runner). There was a short restroom break at Los Angeles Public Library at 10:30 AM. Our group also rode Angels Flight Railway and fare was covered as a part of the tour. [Conclusion]: A solid tour and it was a great experience to learn some basic history of buildings in Downtown LA. I would definitely consider doing some of their other tours to learn more about LA.

We stopped at the Clifton amd before we entered heard all about Clifford Clinton, his efforts to clean up LA, his wife, his mistress, his attempted suicide and finally how all the of the aforementioned managed to find a way to co exist until his death. Chris was well spoken, articulate, funny and very personable. The others on the tour were cool people too- I met two women from my hometown of Boston and ended getting dinner with another couple of people after the walk. The entire experience lasted a little over three hours with bathroom breaks and a martini from the Clifton thrown in the mix. I'm so glad I chose these guys vs a commercialized van on a people safari in LA. I really wanted to experience DTLA from the perspective of a truth seeker, mesmerized by its architecture, history and seedy history. I could feel the energy in some of these places- magical. Highly recommended 5 stars isn't enough! Thanks Chris, you were awesome!

We…read morefigured this would be a good way to see DTLA, try a variety of tasty food, and learn a bit of history while we were at it. Check, check, and another big check! Our tour guide, Scarlet, was awesome. A local Angeleno, it was clear she really knows her stuff. She shared a ton of history with us, about downtown and Los Angeles in general. My favorite morsel was when the city was removing a bunch of trees from Pershing Square, Walt Disney took a bunch of them off the city's hands and used them for the Jungle Cruise! We started with an almond croissant from Pitchoun, then got pork belly skewers from Sari Sari Store at Grand Central Market, then we were on to Maccheroni Republic for some pumpkin ravioli, then tacos at Guisados, and finally donuts at Donut Friend. We walked 2 miles total, and enjoyed every step and every bite. Highly recommend!!

Totally not the guide's fault, but there was a bit of huddling under awnings and leaping over puddles throughout the evening. Also, there were times we wished that the guides waited to tell stories when we were inside, instead of standing in the weather. We were a big group and they split us into two - we started in different places and met up halfway through. Several members of our group had food allergies. The best part of the evening was the diligence our guide took making sure he accommodated the special diet needs, including some bizarre allergies. There were no slip ups or mix ups, and there was a couple of things everyone could eat at each place. The stories we did hear were very interesting, although it was really limited to a couple of anecdotes here and there. There was more socializing and sampling than touring and learning the area's culinary history, which was fine. We felt like the delivery could have been more engaging and the tour more interactive but overall it was really enjoyable. Good variety of different restaurants, and this was one of the only tours we could find that could do an evening slot instead of just daytime. Food was pre-ordered, and all the choices were really good. A great way to learn about the area and try a lot of different things, while spending quality time with groupmates.

I love how his architecture blends in with the environment. I have been to Los Angeles many times in my life and was looking for something new to explore while in town. This was my first visit to the Hollyhock House. I have visited many of Frank Lloyd Wright's house museums and seen many of his structures over the years. But this place was a new one for me to see in person. Hollyhock House is located in Barnsdall Art Park and was completed in 1921. Hollyhock is a type of flower that inspired the motifs in this house's design. Aline Barnsdall hired Frank Lloyd Wright to design this house for her. Today it is owned by the Los Angeles Government. Hollyhock House is located on top of a hill and has a nice view of the Hollywood Sign and Griffith Observatory. I enjoyed my tour through the Hollyhock House. It was affordable and took me about an hour to go through. They require you to wear protective shoe coverings while inside and ask that you don't use flash photography. The kitchen and living room were my favorite rooms. There is also a cool study with lots of books that I also enjoyed. There are a few rooms in this house that are off limits. The back outside patio area has a nice view of Los Angeles. The tour is self-guided, but there is staff on hand that will answer questions if you have some. Barnsdall Art Park is a nice park to relax and have a picnic. It has great views of the surrounding Los Angeles area if you want to hang around this area.

This is located in the hilltop of Barnsdall Park. This house was commissioned by oil heiress and theatre producer Aline Barnsdall. Built between 1919 and 1921. Hollyhock House is named for Barnsdall's favorite flower - the hollyhock. As you tour the house museum, you'll notice the representations of the hollyhock plant throughout the house, which include the ornamental art stone, textiles, furniture, and striking art glass. Interior layout is unquestionably unique and well conceived. For instance, the very low ceilings throughout the house except for the living room. Some sections of the house were off limits to visitors such as the main bedroom and lower levels. As you enter the house, you'll follow protocols such as wearing a disposable shoe cover protectors, no flash photography, and videos. Staff docents presence were ubiquitous and they're highly knowledgeable. Admission ticket cost $7 USD. Plenty of parking in the park. Overall, I liked the self-tour of this UNESCO landmark. I command that you visit.
