Granted LA Fitness is the Walmart of its industry, but I had to share my experience today. During my morning work out, there was the usual music from the exercise studio and the overhead music. But now other music blaring from the trainer section. Truly a cacophony of sound. I inquired at the front desk where a tall, strong but not too bright manager explained the trainers play their own music for their clients to keep them motivated. A trainer that can only motivate their clients through annoying other members? Then perhaps those trainers lack core competency in their field. If being disrespectful to other members is the goal too, then mission accomplished. Not surprising management endorses this behavior as training is a profit center and just another way to degrade the overall experience. The strategy is to sell, not provide a service. read more

We still call this gym THE PHONE BOOTH. Anytime you go there are machines you can not use because people are just sitting on the machine staring at their phones, scrolling instagram, watching videos, doing everything except actually using the machine. If you ask if you can use the machine while they are one the phone you get major attitude. Luke the manager is practically useless, he just sits at the front yelling HALLO at people as they enter. Meanwhile back in the gym, there are bags and other things scattered in the walking areas creating a hazard and the endless machine hogging cell phone zombies taking up the exercise machines. read more

Awful company. Their membership salesmen are like used car salesmen. No rate sheet. They just scribble the prices and options on a piece of paper. What the hell is that? Totally untrustworthy is what it is. And their fees are ridiculous. $99 enrollment fees. They charge $65 per year just to have the membership. Plus the monthly fees, which they want two months upfront. It's beyond irritating. And when you look closely it's not that clean and stuff is busted. This is a fairly large no frills gym with a good variety of the equipment you would want, but it has one fatal flaw: It's overcrowded, particularly if you're looking to do weight training (cardio never seems to be an issue). If you strength train at an off-peak time, say first thing in the morning or late at night, you'll be just fine, but most other times expect to wait to get on certain machines and good luck trying to secure a weight bench or squat rack. A locker room makeover is also much needed. I've seen the membership at this location grow significantly over the years and can't help but wonder what LA Fitness' portfolio strategy is. Since LA Fitness bought X-Sport and then closed their nicest location in the North Side on Broadway in Lakeview, many of those members now come to this location and the infrastructure just doesn't support so many members at peak times. LA Fitness Corporate, I hope you are reading this. There is an obvious solution right in front of you that should have you seeing dollar signs. There is a massive gap in your portfolio in Chicagoland in that you don't have a Signature Club anywhere on the North Side of the city. The Loop downtown or Niles are the closest Signature Club locations. Not only is this location on Lawrence the home club of many LGBT members who likely would be more than capable and willing to pay a little more for a nicer facility and less crowding, the gym could easily expand on the cheap into the former Sears Auto space right next door as it has been sitting vacant for years. Instead, they're competing on the Planet Fitness end of the pricing spectrum with no membership cap in sight. Time to upgrade and expand to a Signature location to give everyone a better experience and reduce overcrowding. It would fulfill a much needed and unmet need in the local market and prevent members who have about had it with the overcrowding from turning elsewhere. read more

My father is disabled and couldn't park at the designated handicap spot because the staff and management like to park right in front by the entrance in a spot that is reserved for the ones who actually need it. This is an ongoing issue. If you work there then you park in the back or somewhere else. So inconsiderate and disrespectful. read more

I don't even know where to start to express how disgusted I am of this facility. This has been an ongoing situation for the past year. Cockroaches have been all over the showers, pool area, bathroom stalls, and in the locker rooms. I don't know about everyone but, I was very disgusted when I found a cockroach crawling around my belongings when I opened my locker recently. This situation has been brought up to management and staff for the past few months, from what it clearly seems they don't care for sanitation. When this situation gets brought up to the member service manager, his responses are very disrespectful and dismissive. Went in for a "15 minute tour," were actually pretty impressed, but when we went to leave they asked us to sit down for a movement. They gave us a very aggressive 45 minute personal training sales pitch. We had already said we weren't interested during the tour. The trainer was trying to map out a 6-9 week plan for us and kept talking over us when we tried to say it wasn't needed. At every opening we said no, not interested, we have to get going. By the end I was being straight up rude because the trainer wouldn't stop, and the manager came over and doubled down on it being a need. They literally would not tell us what the rate for the gym was without personal training. We finally just had to stand up and leave with them still yelling after us. Also, neither of us mentioned weight loss as a goal, but they brought it up about a million times. Sucks because we liked the gym! read more

My experience has not been good. People leave heavy weights on the machines which make it hard for others that cannot lift such heavy ones off. The staff person said that they come around from time to time check the equipment and take the heavy weights off. I have never seen anyone do that I do see the trainers just sometimes watch as I struggle to get them off. They either are training people or sitting at the desk but no one comes around to check. People hoard the free weights and I have complained and have been told they should share out of courtesy but cannot do anything more than ask. If I had to pay for this place out of pocket I would find a better place to spend my money. My insurance gives this place to me. The manager and operations guy basically told me that I had to wait to get the weights if I wanted them. And they do not have time limits. I would actually not even give them a one. If this happened only once or twice it is fine but happens every time. People do not share and there is no policy on duration of time or anything to share the equipment. read more

This gym has a parking lot they share with a Mariano and a Metra Station and rows of housing to the North. The only alternate to the lot is going up the narrowest car ramp I've ever used, to a roof lot. The result is no parking during the day or on weekends, unless you can spend a half hour driving in circles waiting for a space to become available. Also, they just closed their spin cycle room for a month with no notice, and no reason being given. Just a sign on the door saying the room is closed until February 8th. They shoved all the bikes in another room where they won't let anyone use a bike, because it's "too dangerous". Why? They won't say. All in all, it's a gym that couldn't care less about their regular members since they just got the New Year's overflow fighting for all the other equipment for the next two or three months. read more

They don't enforce thru own rules. Their training staff plays their own music on top of the overhead music and few talk LOUD when their client is only two feet away from them. The training area was quiet in the past years and when they started hiring more, it got LOUDER. Most members are respectful but their own staff must not be aware of the gym rules. Most members don't use their services and as such no value to us except for repair and cleaning staff. The manager is indifferent after informing him of the use of personal music of their own staff. The establishment needs to bring decency and respect among members. Lately, too many members dropping equipments creating LOUD noises. Hopefully, they will improve the services in Howard facility in Rogers Park. read more

Repairs takes more than few weeks especially when there is only one machine. They should remind members not to drop machines, quite loud and irritating. At times, trainers are so loud and feels entitled that they own the club. Few machines stinks especially those in contact with armpits. I hope this club can be managed properly. read more

I'll be honest - this gym would be so much better if members were required to else deodorant. I mean, there are some real stinkers that workout here. It's got a confusing layout at first, but it's organized the best it can be with the space it's in. The locker rooms and equipment are a little dated, but are kept clean and well-maintained. The good: large, airy, and lots of equipment. I see people complaining, but it always appears very well kept up and clean to me. I love that the dumbbells go up in 2.5 pound increments. The bad: almost always very crowded, which would be OK if more than a handful of people practiced basic gym etiquette. Namely, putting weights away. How basic is that? I am constantly wondering the gym looking for that other dumbbell, which is annoying as they have easily three or four sets of dumbbells in almost every weight, except for the very heaviest, of course. The crowding situation would be manageable except for the people who sit on the benches for 10 to 20 minutes between sets scrolling on their phones. It's mostly younger guys and in their (very flimsy) defense I really believe that they don't know that they are being rude since they have been scrolling on their phones since they were overindulged, pampered, helicopter-parented toddlers. The management seemingly has no interest whatsoever in addressing either of these situations. I wouldn't want to do it, either, but I think that working at a gym would involve some time spent walking around putting weights away, or reminding people who have walked away from a station that they should take their weights off and put them back on the racks. I don't understand why they can't put up signage that simply says something like, "Be considerate of how much time you spend resting on benches between sets," or even (AGAIN!) the most very basic: "Please put weights away." I have asked management about this a couple of times - admittedly not when I was in the best mood - and just got something between a blank stare and a shrug back. I have been working out for a long, long time in many, many gyms over the years and have never seen such a bewildering and all but total lack of awareness around basic gym etiquette and common courtesy. On February 14, 2025, I scanned in @ 4:04 PM. Subsequently, a grimy, spineless individual(s) accessed my (locked, locker #73, men's locker room) and removed my debit and credits. I was unaware of this felony until I went to pay for my purchases at Mariono's, approx. 2 hours later. The above grimy, spineless individual(s), within 30 minutes (probably less) charged thousands of dollars (on my credit card) at Cartier Jewelers on Michigan Ave. A 2nd attempt to charge over 1k @ Jewel/Osco, store # 3443, was unsuccessful, as the bank declined this fraudulent transaction @ 5:50 pm, also on 2/14/25. As documented in a text I rec'd. from the bank. The following day, I called to rpt. the incident. The person I s/w was sympathetic and advised: 1. This is been a common occurrence. 2. To rpt. the incident to the service mgr. A couple of days later, I called and s/w the "Service Manager." My time would have been better spent watching paint dry. A few days later, I received a call from said "Service Manager" advising my monthly membership payment was denied, this individual, fully aware of my name, had zero recollection of our conversation re; stolen debit/credit cards. I had noticed, that many members would bring their belongings with them when working out. NOW I KNOW WHY. Given other members' (legitimate) concerns regarding; constant cell phone usage, lack of proper ventilation (a health hazard), and teenagers running amok, the Ravenswood location is dreadful. This location should be dismantled and (maybe) re-established with better ventilation, newer equipment, and a mature, professional administration. read more

The good: It's one of the cleanest of the LAFs. Plenty of equipment in working order if someone isn't using their phone on it. Free parking but that can be difficult at busy times. I've had drivers follow me out of the door to get my space. The manager is a great guy. The bad: Phone Booth. Equipment is hard to get to often because a significant number of people, unashamedly, use it as an office. The staff should put up a huge sign discouraging phone use during a set and encouraging people to ask to use a machine if this is happening. In the old days someone would ask to 'work in'. When did that stop being a thing? That being said i look at my phone during my 60 second intervals but if i get up I'll lose the machine. Overselling. There's a whiteboard showing sales with a ton of hashmarks. The gym is getting more and more crowded without the thought of it getting harder and harder to get in and have a good workout. Certified trainers?? I saw a trainer set up an exercise for an elderly woman where I don't know how she didn't herniate a disk. It hurt me to watch. Ill echo what others have already said: -The gym is not well maintained. In fact, every treadmill there is rusting. They are so old they have original iPod connectors on them still. The HR monitors on 80% of the machines do not work at all. There has been little to no investment into the space even though the gym is absolutely packed. -The sales team is *slimy* and turn over is intense. There is also visible romantic drama going on between Jimmy and a female co worker who always brings her kids with her. Her daughters running around the gym and its so distracting. Her and Jimmy are constantly having arguments and its so awkward to try and work out around. I had to interact with Jimmy once after asking to use their BMI calculator thing and got roped into doing a 'full body consultation' which just ended up being a sales pitch. Jimmy spent most of my session checking out girls passing by and miscounting my reps. Seemed like he had just woken up from a nap in his car or something, he was totally out of it. I get terrible vibes from him and the rest of the sales team. With that said, the front desk team here is the nicest of any LA Fitness I have been to and is consistently friendly and welcoming. -The gym is SO over crowded -The temperature regulation here is bad and way too humid -The men's locker room has no ventilation, especially in the second portion where the showers and stalls/urinals are. The floors always slippery and wet and the walls have water dripping down them *always* -There is a ton of minors that come here and they cause a ton of issues. They run around and chase each other and there is basically zero oversight. Minors shouldn't be here unaccompanied -I'm giving the gym 2 stars instead of 1 because they do have a wide selection of equipment, particular weight machines and free weights. But the gym should be remodeled and upgraded to a signature location based on its popularity and available space - but it doesnt seem anyone from Corp. is paying attention to how badly things are presented here. read more

Well here I am 03/05/20 I'm finally back at the LA Fitness in Chicago after 1 month in Japan & The Philippines. They unceremoniously shut down the LA Fitness Morton Grove club on 03/27/19. I guess you can only sulk and pout for so long. Still it's sad to see the former 40,000 S.F flagship Gym shut down. I have come to know many of the members over the years. They are now spread out all over Chicago land. At least I can workout here temporarily as this is probably the closest club to my house. As far as the Lawerence Ave LA Fitness club itself it is much newer then the Morton Grove Club, and has newer equipment, but it lacks the size and members that have been going to Morton Grove forever. This building is sandwiched between a Mariano's and Sears? It's nice but it really lacks the character of the old club. Like all of the LA Fitness clubs it doesn't have a track or steam sauna. The newer clubs seem to really pack as much equipment in the space as possible (especially the cardio equipment.). I guess this will be home until the Touhy Signature Club opens soon. read more

It's an ok gym. I agree with a lot of the good and negative reviews here. I paid the year long membership ($400), not bad. They have the basic equipment to get a good workout in, but they could update their cardio machines. Some nights can be pretty crowded, but that's everywhere. Just learn more workouts instead of going to one machine, people. Anyway, the customers are ok. The only thing that someone pointed out is that the entire gym will smell like feet or B.O. All things considered this gym is decent. Good selection of free weights, machines, cardio, and training specific rooms (cycle, large studio, personal training section) I would recommend going before 3:30 pm or after 7:30 p.m. if you are looking for a quieter vibe. Because of its location in Ravenswood it is a popular gym and can sometimes be packed pretty full. Only real people I've had negative vibes from are some high school asswipes who haven't learned social cues and how to exist in a public space yet - they usually come in that time frame (3:30-7:30). Place is pretty clean and most of the time you can find what you're looking for. Some other things you may want to know: 4 pool lanes Smaller hot tub Tight and rather open locker rooms This location has a trap bar for deadlifts, assisted pull up machines, several punching bags. One fully open cage setup, and two cages with fixed spot bars, 3 smith machines. Not too much room otherwise to do free-bar exercises other than facing towards the windows on Lawrence or in the cages. read more

This place is always dirty and the weights are never where they're supposed to be. Typical corporate owned gym, packing people in but doing the bare minimum as a gym. Lots of missing or broken equipments too. Don't sign up if you ever plan on leaving. They make it nearly impossible to quit your membership. read more

This gym is a dump! When walk in, the first thing you smell is weed and it always seems to permeate from the area by their "membership coordinators". Disgusting locker rooms and the shower floor tiles have lost most of their grout. All original equipment from 10 + years ago and all that disgusting carpet needs to be ripped out as it stinks. What's good: -They participate in whatever gym program it is that's offered by my work, so I can get a decent price with an easy cancellation policy -I've never had to wait for cardio equipment, even at times when the gym is busy -It's a decent enough place to go spend some time on cardio equipment that I can't fit into my one bedroom condo What's not good: -This gym is HOT, like if they have A/C they choose to barely utilize it...I haven't died from heat stroke working out here, but I always leave feeling pretty sticky -half (or maybe more) of the heart rate monitors don't work and this is annoying because a key goal of my workout is achieving a target heart rate -the sales tactics are relentless - even after I signed up through my work's membership program, their sales people kept calling every other day about signing up lol -I'm not super impressed by the weightlifting equipment options, and unlike cardio equipment, it seems the few that I do like using are usually taken This has been my personal experience with this gym. I bring my own entertainment so am not too bothered by older equipment without the new tech bells and whistles. I also don't use the shower facilities so can't speak to that. It's a decent price, but enough to help guilt me into working out and getting my moneys' worth. I settled with this gym a while back because it's my best option as I do not have a car or much money, and it does the job. Hopefully I don't get harassed for following up with this: The facilities are not well-maintained, and the manager is your run of the mill sleazy salesman. Be very careful when conversing with him! He has lied to me three times about my rates and other perks in an attempt to upsell me, hoping I wouldn't read the fine print, but he ended up backing down and giving me an acceptable contract after I called him out. So obviously, if you can afford a better option, skip this place. But if you're desperate but not THAT desperate to consider Planet Fitness, welcome aboard, just stay vigilant. I have a love/hate relationship with this LA Fitness. What I love: It's my respite in the winter and brings me welcome endorphins I'm feeling the winter blues. The best times to go are weekday mid-morning/afternoons or weekend evenings. There are some pretty amazing classes here, cardio equipment, pool and weights. It's a pretty good deal for the membership itself. Love the location, love the cleaning people. What I am not so in-love with: It can get CROWDED. If you go at a peak time, which is usually weekend mornings, early evening weekday, you may NOT find parking. That is the worst. You get all amped up to go the gym and you get there and you can't find parking. There is parking in the garage at Marianos but even that can be somewhat time-consuming. The other little downfalls are that the pool can sometimes act as a soaking tub for folks who don't actually feel like swimming but want to soak off a few calluses. There are also not many lanes so it can get busy. All in all - it's a gym. You don't have to live there but you do gotz to get your bod right. This is a place that gets the job done but it may not be glamourous. read more

This club has gone down hill tremendously over the last year. Months ago, I pointed out mold in the showers. I feel like the club is so bad now, it's a health hazard. And operations manager doesn't seem to care. I wasn't trying to be a jerk - I tried to point out the black mold in the showers (black mold is dangerous!!), a brown hot tub - literally brown, and the mold, mildew, algae in the pool. I'm the showers, its clear where the cleaning crew can't reach the higher tiles. Below ~6.5ft it's reasonably clean. Above ~6.5ft... the tiles/grout on the walls, columns, and ceiling are black with mold. Regarding the pool, a staffer said "it can't be that dirty, we just had it cleaned 3.5 weeks ago." 3.5 WEEKS AGO!?!? My friend works at LSAC, and he said theirs is cleaned DAILY. The staff was certain that the brown hot tub was open, they all thought it was closed due to its unhygienic nature. Yet it was open and people were in it (GROSS!!). When I tried to speak with the ops manager, she refused to engage with me... she seemed offended that I pointed these out in front of other members. I sent the pics to the HQ in Cali, and they're engaging the regional manager. But for now, this club is unusable to me. Attached are pics from today... read more

The worst. Zero customer service. Went to a yoga class this morning. The schedule on the app indicates the regular teacher is teaching the class. Waited 15 mins. Is there a sub coming? Why didn't they update the app? Someone from class goes to ask the staff because they don't bother to let us know & they basically ignore her. Asked on the way out what happened. One of the newer LA Fitness in Chicago. This one is one of the more spacious ones out there (the one on Dempster in Morton Grove is pretty big). I've been to this gym a few times now, when I'm in the city and if I lived closer, I would go more often. The clientele here are reflective of the area of Ravenswood -- friendly, polite, good-lookin' Chicagoans. Although this LA Fitness is adjacent to Mariano's, I was able to find parking without a problem here. I hear some Mariano's customers grumble about the parking lot being full (there's a separate parking lot upstairs) but I guess I've been lucky. Upon entering, you scan your key fob and there's two separate large areas of cardio machines for all you hamsters out there. I haven't tried out the ellipticals or treadmills yet, so can't say too much about them, but there seems to be enough of them where there was plenty to go around. Past the cardio machines, you have your studio/class area with speed/heavy bags and then you have your locker rooms. The locker rooms are decent and clean and there's not too much phalluses hanging around (pun intended) freely to make me too uncomfortable. Past the locker rooms are your stretching areas and then finally, is the free weights and machine area, along with the pool. I always find it interesting that it seems all the LA Fitnesses I've been to (quite a few... check out my Yelp list) and they all have floor-to-ceiling windows where people outside can just watch as your plunge into the pool in your leopard-print speedo. The pool also shares a wall with the free-weights area, so a quarter of the wall is also floor-to-ceiling windows. Another reason to be laser-focused on your workout and not get distracted by a half-naked wrinkly dude using the pool showers. The free weights area is pretty standard from other more modern LA Fitnesses out there. There's several bench-presses, and a lot of benches for dumbbells too. Several pulley machines, one decline, and a few squat racks and Smith Machines. Overall, a good amount of weights. I did wish they had more Hammer Strength incline bench presses, but its not really a big deal. Everything was in working order and I did not find any "Out of Order" machines so far on my visits. I wouldn't knock-down my review if there are; there always will be a machine that is broken here-and-there, it's about whether they stay broken from extended periods of times or not, is what would affect my review. BATHROOM REVIEW: This pertains to the locker room. As somewhat mentioned earlier in the review, the locker rooms and bathrooms were somewhat clean. Memberships continue to go up, but customer service continues to go down. Staff sitting at the desk, feet up while face timing friends, ignoring members.
