From a 22 (yes twenty two) year LA Fitness member. I am visiting Edmonton from the United States for a few weeks and wanted to use the LA Fitness facility during my stay. Upon checking in, it was discovered that although I hold a National membership, which grants access to all 50 U.S. states, it is not INTERnational so it doesn't extend to Canada - because the membership is so old. Complicating the situation further, my girlfriend recently joined while in the States, and her membership allows her access to ANY LA Fitness facility throughout North America. To obtain the same access she enjoys, I was informed that I would need to cancel my 20+ year membership and sign up for a new one at a higher cost. Understanding my predicament, Ray, the gym manager, escalated the issue to his manager and was able to find a solution. While somewhat clunky, it was effective and allowed me to continue using the facility. I've worked exclusively in customer service for more than 40 years and Ray earns an A+ for his patience, understanding, and creativity. As for the gym itself, I have worked out at LA Fitness locations in Washington, Oregon, California, and Arizona. While the Edmonton facility is slightly smaller than a few I've visited and lacks a couple of machines I'd like to have, I've had no trouble getting in a solid workout. Maintaining equipment is more than an obligation of professionalism. It is a health and safety concern. I will stress that EACH location struggles with the exact same issues. When equipment is not properly maintained, it poses a risk to members, and causes more expensive fixes than if it were maintained in the first place. You have paper towel and sad hand sanitizer dispensers that are meant to be pumped onto the paper towel for sanitizing equipment. It's such an inefficient method that members will neglect cleaning up after themselves altogether. This just adds to the equipment's bio-hazardous state. Too hot in the summer, absolutely bone chilling during the winter- these gyms do not regulate heat well whatsoever. The hours are mediocre. And although the facilities are advertised as child-free, don't be fooled. You WILL run into screaming and crying children upon every other visit. The worst thing by far about these gyms is the customer service, or lack thereof: Because this is a corporate company that cares solely about profit, the sales teams and management for these gyms are absolutely atrocious. They are adjacent to used car salesmen, and will go out of their way to make any member (or potential member's) experience a gargantuan disappointment. Take a look through reviews for any location to understand that some of the particular individuals running these clubs have been dishonest to members, blatantly disrespectful, and that they refuse to honor company policies in their own interest (commission). These managers are selfish, slimy salesmen. They will NOT honor trials as advertised online, WILL hide fees in your signup, and if you hope to cancel free of charge as the company advertises, GOOD LUCK! Even if you do cancel your membership, or request it be cancelled, you may find yourself being billed for months following. Find any other gym unless you're hoping to waste your time and money. read more

I would not recommend the LA Fitness - Edmonton - Calgary trail location to anyone thinking of joining. I have never been to a gym that was less welcoming and less inviting. With school and work I have found myself moving to new cities quite frequently, and often like to try a few different gyms before I commit to a new place. Until yesterday, I did not think it was possible to have such an unpleasant experience with gym staff. My friends and I are here in Edmonton visiting our friend who has a membership at LA Fitness. We prospectively may be moving to Edmonton for school or work but on this particular occasion are just visiting. Online, there is the option to sign up for a 5 day guest pass. This seemed like a great option for getting a feel for a new gym. I am by no means new to working out, but a new gym can be quite intimidating and committing to one in the future is a big decision. So upon our visit we explain to one of the girls at the front desk that we are here visiting Edmonton and signed up for guest passes online. The manager AARON SILVERMAN had even spoken to some of us on the phone the previous day asking when we would be visiting so he could be sure to be there to show us around. With an absolute look of disgust she responded with "so you don't actually want to buy a pass"? And with complete honesty, and even though we may find ourselves in Edmonton in the near future, we replied with well for this trip we are just visiting. The staff member then told us "you can't have a guest pass if you're not going to buy a membership". From a customer service stand point, a guest pass is to entice people who are not members already to join your gym. It allows patrons to get a feel for the facility and see if it suits their needs. How does it make sense for this girl to within a few minutes of meeting us, decide we are not welcome as guests? Will she get paid less if she gives us guest passes? Will the gym be at a loss if they let us use guest passes for a few visits? At this point this seems like a misunderstanding, one of the girls in our group had spoken to the location manager and told him we would be visiting for the week and had not been told it was an issue. So we explain to her we had even talked to someone there at LA fitness the day before. She then waives Aaron Silverman over and tells him "these people are just visiting and don't want to buy a pass", which again is a grand assumption. I don't decide if I want to buy a pass until I've tried the gym, with either a discounted first week pass or a couple free trial days. He then responds with yeah we give out guest passes for our members to give to their friends and families to bring in potential members, so for you guys, you can't have guest passes and have to pay drop-in fees every time you visit. My friends and I paid the drop in fee of $15.75 each to use the facility. The gym itself was sufficient, but there are so many other gyms around and I would recommend people go to a different one. The staff at the LA fitness - Edmonton -Calgary trail location need to be educated on how to be kind and welcoming to new people. If we ever find ourselves in Edmonton, we will take our business elsewhere. read more

Awesome gym in a super duper plaza with Nando's, and others. Has a pool, sauna on left corner....big stretching area...basketball court, lots of treadmills and a juice bar (no Amex, lost my biz). Have a diff type of free weights, no clanging sound! Changing shower rooms awesome, door separation so pretty quiet. Plenty bench sitting too. Ashley super nice, ask for 1 week complimentary pass. read more

The South side location was good when I started but lately there's absolutely no gym etiquette and none of the staff are watching for it. The dumbells/barbells are scattered half the time and not put back, people crowding the weight racks, guys grunting and moaning like they're power lifting, people using more than one machine at a time. Like today, Dec 15, both leg press machines tied up for an hour with one guy texting/talking more then working out and the other guy taking 10 minutes between sets. read more

Worst gym i've ever been a member of! Terrible sanitation, dumb staff, cardio equipment that never gets fixed, and a hot tub that's never worked. Where to start?? After 4 months of being open they still can't figure out how to keep a hot tub running. Its hasn't worked 90% of the time. Twice I even called ahead to see if it was working and was told it was, i drove down, showered, and came to an empty or freezing cold hot tub. If you are coming for lane swimming be prepared for constant alarms going off every 15 minutes (for the hot tub that never works) and the occasional super loud evacuation alarm that the staff never seems to notice or know about. Their sanitation system is ghetto brown paper towels that you pump hand sanitizer onto (IF the pump is working and you don't have to hunt around the gym for one that is). It does a poor job cleaning and is not friendly to use so predictably, no one does. You really notice it at he stretching mats are always covered in footprints, hair and skin. When a kindergarten classroom has a better sanitation system than a gym with thousands of members you really shake your head. Why can't they use sanitary wet-nap dispensers like every other gym? Or even a spray bottle with a cloth on it? If you like to use the tv's or listen to music while on the cardio equipment, don't rely on being able to zone out in your favourite jams. The audio doesn't work on a third of the machines and i haven't notice one ever get fixed even after telling the staff who are generally completely indifferent or give you attitude when you tell them equipment is broken or ask them why an evacuation alarm is going off that no one is doing anything about... And for some reason the staff thinks it's okay to tour new female staff through the mens change room in the middle of the day. Yes i was naked. And no they didn't see the logic in say, giving a tour BEFORE the gym opens. (why do they need a tour of the mens change room anyway?!) If you need a gym with a hot tub (as i do for physio), stick to the City of Edmonton gyms. Really, if you need a gym at all, this one isn't even worth the $40/month. read more

Gym dont honor what they advertise. I planned my morning to try this gym prior to officially joining. I went in with a free pass that I got online. They denied my entrance giving the excuse that its a holiday --- Gym was not busy! Not happy with the service. Will probably join another gym. read more

3 stars because it's a new gym, things that bother me here why I can't give it a higher rating- 1. dirty during peek hours, including washrooms 2. gym etiquette is lacking, weights left on equipment, equipment for cable machines scattered on floor 3. some front end staff are amazing, others lack in the customer service dept 4. no water bottle fillers!! 5. last BIG complaint, no wet wipes or spray bottles to clean equipment, COME ON LA FITNESS, fix this!!! read more

I really enjoyed my workout here! Manager Aaron was really helpful and gave awesome customer service. All the other members here were really nice and smiley. It seemed like a really great environment for working out. The equipment is all lifestyle brand and the gym is kept really clean. The windows make it bright. As well as this the equipment isn't too close together, so you don't feel like you're cramped with a million people working out. Bathrooms are bright and clean. They really did a good job on renovating this old furniture store LOL. HUGE kids club area! I definitely enjoy working out here! *** The only thing I think they should change is the fact that they wipe down equipment with paper towel and spray bottles. I've been going to this gym since it first opened, after switching from the nearby Goodlife Fitness after having several issues over the course of my two year membership there. I can honestly say that this new gym is miles ahead of the nearby Goodlife. Though it does get busy at peak times (after work weekdays, late afternoon weekends) this gym has more than enough equipment and space to occupy members if they are waiting for a bench/piece of equipment to open up. My few interactions with staff have been positive and friendly. Another encouraging thing I noticed is that I can't think of a single time I was there where I didn't see at least one staff member cleaning. Having a clean gym is extremely important to many people and cleanliness has never been an issue at this LA Fitness location. The crowd at the gym seems to be relatively friendly too. I'm a regular member and have noticed that members are friendly and respectful for the most part. A sign indicating LA's "no-steroid policy" in the change rooms has appeared to keep a lot of the juice heads away, which I find usually cause lots of problems with gyms in my past experience. As mentioned earlier, there is a lot of space in the gym. Roughly 20-30 treadmills along with around a dozen bikes and ellipticals occupy the cardio section. I would guess around 25-30 weight training machines, and a dumbbell rack that seems to never end. All of these are topped off by the bonus group fitness room (also huge), Spin Class room, basketball court and 20-metre swimming pool complete with hot tub. The change rooms are gorgeous, and almost always clean and maintained. 10 showers and a dry sauna are located in each change room. Though I signed up earlier for a discounted rate, my understanding is that the current memberships go for around 65$ a month. However, with no contract, you never feel locked in. The only downside to the memberships is paying a cancellation fee after your last month has been determined, though realistically this could be 20 years down the line depending on your need for the membership. This price seems justified for a gym that is very similar to a city-run facility, though some may find it a bit high if they are just looking for a gym. The membership is also good at any LA Fitness around the world, a nice perk. My only criticisms of the gym are as follows: There are only drinking fountains located in the gym, and none large enough or with a specific spout for filling water bottles. My bottle just barely fits into the sink, so I usually fill there, but I know this has been an inconvenience for others. The other criticism I have is the length of time some repairs have taken. A couple machines as well as the hot tub were down for close to a month shortly after opening, which was a big inconvenience to a lot of members. These have been repaired recently though, and hopefully any other repairs can be completed quickly. I have also noticed maintenance staff around a lot more recently, which is promising. I would definitely recommend this LA Fitness location, especially to the alternatives in the neighbourhood. read more

Awesome customer service, and the best fitness facility in edmonton in my opinion. Like a rec centre for adults only, this place has a pool and basketball court. All the classes are included too and there aren't even contracts. Highly recommend it to anyone sick of crowded and dirty clubs. LOVE it!! This gym is large, open bright, and the equipment is world class. The front desk staff are very friendly, and there is never a line up for the equipment (i go during the day however) The equipment and facilities are very clean, and there are sanitary stations to wipe off equipment. I was lying in the hot tub following my workout and felt like i was in a luxury spa. The water was cleaner than even the highest end hotels. Haven't tried any of the group classes yet, but am looking forward to it!! read more

Called the staff and manager and told me sorry payment has already gone through and chuckles in the background. Then tells me he has to go as he is busy. Very rude and impolite. I am so disappointed with this locations cleanliness. The bathrooms are disgusting. The floors are only rinsed with hot water and never actually moped. You can see that they are turning black. The walls in the bathroom just as bad. I have seen the same dried on who knows what on the wall since I have started at that location. I am not sure why the cleaners think that rinsing things off with hot water will some how magically clean and disinfect. read more

I went there to cancel my membership and the girl sitting at the reception asked me my reason.I said because my time do not work out anymore.She laughs and said it doesn't make any sense.She asked me again and I answered her one more time and yet she still said it doesn't make any sense to her.lol If a customer wants to cancel,even the reason doesn't make sense to YOU,why do you think you have the right to throw that attitude towards your customer? Very friendly staff and every machine you could possibly need. Easy to use set up as all of the machines you need for every specific area are around each other. Lots of options for free weights and large stretching area. Also a large pool and hot tub, complete with steam room. Nice to have a ladies only area as well. read more

Most of the staff are nice, but the manager is a giant dbag who lied to me about not having any offers for family members then I got an email about it the same day I signed up. They lied to me again when I asked them about it and told me the offer doesn't exist, funny I still get emails about it to this day. My friends that I got to sign up after me got the discount as well which also seemed ironic. Oh and they are rude/super unhelpful when you need to cancel membership. This facility is "great". New equipment, clean facility and.... that's about it for the good points. This club is very, and I repeat very crowded between 4pm and 8pm. Several times i ended up working out something different than what I want it because the equipment was used by others. If you decide to give it a try, take a tour of this club at the time of the day you plan to actually work out. As a result of being overcrowded, numerous times, the paper towel dispensers are empty. So good luck wiping someone else's sweat off the equipment. As for the personnel, they are great if you don't expect anything from them. I got a free personal training session, and after the "professional evaluation", I've been told I am in great physical shape. Trust me: I am not. I expected a few advices on how to reach a certain level in my physical condition, but.....nope, no professional advice was available. Even when i asked for directions on how the equipment should be used, I've been told: they are self explanatory. Yes they are...after a while. So again, it's a "great" club if you don't expect too much, and your work schedule is not a regular 8-4. read more
