This restaurant has a real find in their kitchen and should be congratulated. I have to say that we were astounded to find in this beautiful restaurant the service equal some if the worst we have experienced in all our travels. It has a large, beautifully maintained garden with views of Ludlow Castle and a local church. The garden abuts several green fields, in one of which cows graze. There is a small wooden table and chairs at which it is very pleasant to sit and relax and admire the wonderful view. My friends and I were served morning coffee there. It's all delightfully bucolic. The house itself is a large detached building, circa 1930. There are three spacious bedrooms. I stayed in The Lawrence, which is basically a suite of rooms - a bedroom, a bathroom and a separate toilet - with its own door. It was extremely comfortable, with all mod cons, eg a television and tea and coffee making facilities. Breakfast, which is freshly cooked to order and delicious, is served in a room downstairs. The proprietors are very warm and friendly. Nothing is too much trouble for them. Prices are very reasonable - I paid £65 a night for sole occupancy of my suite of rooms. Whitfield House is excellent value for money. It's the best B&B establishment I have stayed at (and I've been to a fair few!). I recommend it unreservedly.

A gravelled drive leads you to the front of the house, which is surrounded by mature trees and we were greeted on arrival by the owner's friendly dog 'Rodney Rocket'! After a very welcome cup of tea and piece of cake, the owner talked us through some of the best places to visit or to eat in the area, like the Ludlow Food Centre and the Jolly Frog restaurant; both of which we tried and were well worthy of their recommendation. Our room, the 'Lawrence Room' was quite sizeable, with a separate toilet and bathroom, with a cavernous bath, and the sun-soaked main room, had a feeling of space and a comfortable king size bed. Of course, not forgetting the amazing views, over into the landscaped tiered garden, the rolling fields beyond and Ludlow Castle in the distance. A decent sized TV and a good selection of tea and coffee too. Breakfast was served in an equally impressive room, with wood panel walls and well spaced tables. A great variety of fruit, cereals and fruit juices to start, and then a great Full English Breakfast, making full use of local produce, one of the nicest I've had for some time; the scrambled eggs were particularly fine! The owners and staff were friendly and helpful, and the walk into the centre of Ludlow was just right, at about 10 minutes. Whitfield House is a such a peaceful and restful place to escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life; waking up to just the sound of the birds in the morning was fantastic.

Making our way from the 'UK capital of books' Hay on Wye to Hereford we found ourselves driving…read moreover the River Wye across a wooden toll bridge. Whilst there are faster routes between Hay and Hereford it was worth taking the side roads and paying the 50p charge to use the plank-laid bridge. A toll house is on one side of the bridge which we stopped at once we had crossed and handed over our coin to a chap sitting outside. Apparently the bridge earns £35,000 a year which is impressive considering the small fee and the fact the route can be completely bypassed by the A438. The bridge is about 17 miles west of Hereford and 4 miles north-east of Hay on Wye If you're ever near Hay it's worth driving through for the quaintness. In nearby Whitney on Wye you may want to take a more leisurely view of the river at the Boat Inn pub/restaurant which sits right on the riverside.

The old house is very well kept and as you would expect as you enter. The bedroom I had was a good size with a King size bed (but not necessary as I was the only one in it!). The bathroom was very modern except nowhere for the toilet roll to 'live' and no place for your toothbrush or aftershave to sit. The mirror had LED's in it but didn't work, and the shower floor very slippy (no anti-slip) as I almost when ar** over t**!!!! The swimming pool looked new and inviting (I didn't use as I was here on my own and couldn't be bothered). There was just something missing at every level really. Staff constantly called you 'Sir'... My bathroom had all my stuff on the floor... The breakfast buffet looked nice but actually limited choice but it looked grand because of the setting... Overall very nice, but not my ideal choice (I was here on business so wouldn't choose this myself despite it being a similar price to a top Premier Inn)
