Not the greatest Mexican restaurant. To start, the salsa that comes with chips is too tomato-ee. Sucks. I can make better food at home, but sometimes too lazy. The only thing on the menu worth your time and money is the cheeseburger. Sad, if you ask me. One particular waitress is terrible, handing food down from one end of the table, expecting the party to pass it down. If you ask for a refill, expect a sigh. Boo! Tasty salsa, good 'ole Rotel queso, and the tastiest enchilada sauce I've had in a very long time. Being from San Diego, I expected the flauta in my combo to be the flour tortilla kind, and what was on my plate is what we in San Diego call a rolled taco. The thin hand-made corn tortilla crisped up quite nicely, was crunchy without being hard to bite through, and ground beef in my crispy taco was seasoned nicely. The staff was VERY conscientious of my jalapeño allergy, helping me choose menu items that were okay for me to eat. My hubby had the Sonora special chicken chimichanga, smothered in queso. He's a beef eater that rarely orders chicken Mexican food dishes. He said the tender chicken was so flavorful, and to quote him, "I scored on that one". read more

I am not kidding when I say this is the worst Mexican restaurant I've ever been to. Maybe even the worst restaurant in general. Upon entering the place my friends and I were gawked at by the customers and employees alike as if we were a group of Yetis in top hats. Food was bland and seemed as if it had been frozen. We asked for hot sauce and were told the restaurant "didn't have any." ... que? Staff was strange and I might even say rude. Bizarre dead space mariachi music played the whole time as if I was having an unpleasant DMT trip but the back room was culturally themed. Honestly just glad I didn't get poisoned because that's the vibe I was getting. I mean who knows, maybe it's still kicking in. Seriously, if you're passing through this God Forsaken town please just drive through the DQ and then keep going. Just passing through and saw good reviews on Google. We were really pleasantly surprised how good it was. I had the Rene Special (cheese enchilada & guise (which is really similar to chili colorado) with rice/beans & homemade corn tortillas. And a margarita too. Everything was great, especially the guise. My husband had the Ivan Special (cheese enchilada, beef taco, & chalupa (pretty similar to a tostada) with rice/beans. He said it was all really good. We are pretty spoiled by great Mexican food in AZ, but this certainly held up to our standards! I would for sure return if nearby again. read more

On our way to Marfa, we stopped here for lunch. There's not much to say expect that this what you think you might find Podunk, TX with some higher prices. Each plate was 2-3 more than you would expect from your typical Mexican restaurant, and the food was just mediocre. My food was okay, but other people at our table didn't quite enjoy theirs. Also, only your first basket of chips and salsa are free, but each basket after is 2.50. I know what you're thinking. This review was kind of meh, like the food. Or they have a chef who prepares at least one epicurian delicacy that you've never heard of and you remember it well for years to come? Well this is about as far the opposite direction as you can go. Boxed taco shells? Chicken makes me think canned. Mexican rice.... was it? Verde sauce super thin. Really bizarre horchata. Tasted like a cheap coctail mix added to water. This had to be one of the worst experiences I have ever had in a small town. After 40 min had to ask where our order was and if if was going to take much longer. Order came to us in 5 min. Sounds good right? NOPE! Had the sour cream enchiladas. Simple. Cheese on top not melted should have been my first clue. Took a big bite and the chicken was cold! The burritos were just meat and some kind of velveeta-like cheese that seemed like it had been sitting a while so it was hardened. The meat was just a glob of wet pork that seemed also like it was on the edge of going bad. Unfortunately it looked like one of the only Mexican restaurants open at that time. I wish we had 1/2 stars because I would give it 3.5. The meals were good. I don't think I would say anything tasted super fresh but very solid for a cheap Mexican place. I do recommend the loco taco and the number 7. If you like nachos, get it as your meal not an appetizer because it is the size of Texas. The sopapillas were also very good but make sure you squeeze that little bear to cover them in some honey to really add good flavor. Now the bad. One, is that the service is ok. Not great. The Decor and especially the floor are no newer then 1981. The seats are banquet seats that are rock hard from the 80's and maybe never cleaned. Being that this seems to be the only Mexican restaurant opened after 5pm within miles of here I think you won't be disappointed with the meal. Good food, small bar with decent drinks for dinner (not for a party). There is a plate similar to a sampler plate with basically one of each, having like 6-7 things that is $16 and worth every bite to me. Without much to choose from, you won't go wrong! 3.5 stars! read more

Well, my husband ate there about 2 hours ago. Nothing difficult. Chips, salsa, enchiladas with the normal sides. A michelada to drink along with a water. Not even 20 min after he left, he became incredibly sick. Vomiting and the whole other works... So we are relocating to the area from Houston and will be sure to NEVER pay this establishment a visit and will not recommend to anyone. We ended up being pleasantly surprised with a great lunch highlighted by excellent homemade flour tortillas. Yesterday I had the pleasure of having lunch here. It was very good! I had the Carmen Gizo plate (I think thats what it was called) and it was very, very good! It was like carne guisada but without the thick gravy, it was more like a light sauce. The chuncks of meat were very tender and the sauce was very flavorful. I had the homemade corn tortillas with it and they were tasty. When in Sonra or passing through Sonora I'd recommend this place for great Tex-Mex food. read more

This is one of the worst "Mexican" restaurants I have ever been too. We were on a long road trip and wanted some good food and we should have known when we were the only people in there. The staff was nice but I'm not sure that the food needed to be served to people. We had paper plates and plastic forks. My brothers beans looked like cat food. My boyfriends enchiladas were served on foil and we are not sure why?? Me and my sister got the taco plate special and good lord... we could barley eat a couple bites of them. The beans had no taste at all and my brothers beef for his fajitas tasted like they dumped a whole bottle of seasoning on it. They needed to take some off the beef and add some for the beans. The hot sauce had no taste at all and we ordered queso and it tasted like store bought and it was probably the best thing we ate. Traveling with the family from California to Houston had to stop in sonora for the night, we previous made this trip 3 months ago and went to the worst restaurant ever ( la la Mexican food), don't ever eat their. So as you can imagine we were not pleased about stopping here again, but can I say we found a gem. La Mex was absolutely delicious. When I am in Sonora visiting family, I usually make it a point to visit this place. There are so many things that are good here. I ate here last night and had the delicious chicken tenders. They were very tasty along with the gravy and baked potato (usually comes with fries). Other things that are da bomb are their hamburgers (good size and come with fries plus reasonably priced), their guizo, and their avocado/guacamole enchiladas. They have a pretty good variety of food choices, nice ambiance, and friendly staff. Whether you live here or are passing through this town, stop here for a nice meal. read more

I brought 3 of my hunters to eat at LaMex tonight. The food was good as usual, but at the end of the meal my hunters commented that if they wanted to eat off of paper plates, they could have stayed at the ranch. Get rid of the paper plates and start serving on real plates again. read more

Stopped here on our way back from Cali. Although I was craving fish tacos and they didn't serve that particular item what I got satisfied me. Ordered the chile relleno with cheese and my husband ordered the cheese enchilladas which were both really good. My husband is particular about ordering his enchiladas with queso on top but he really enjoyed his meal. Our wait staff was very nice and courteous and the restroom was clean and smelled pretty which is a big plus for me since I am 2 1/2 months pregnant and have an aversion to public restrooms even when I'm not pregnant.
