I visited La Mosquée on a Rick Steves' recommendation, and it was such a unique dining experience on our recent Paris trip. The restaurant, set inside a stunning mosque across the street from Jardin des Plantes, is hard to miss. I had made a reservation for an early dinner, and we were seated inside the mosque. Upon arriving, we actually had to find a new table since the restaurant's resident cat was sprawled across the couch, taking an afternoon nap. When we were settled in, we ordered the tagine with beef meatballs; couscous with chicken; and eggplant and carrot salad. Everything paired so well together. The tagine was incredibly flavorful - it tasted as if it had been simmering for hours. The couscous, stew, and chicken all arrived on separate platters - it was a little awkward to serve, but the sum of parts was delicious. The chicken was tender and juicy, and the vegetable stew was the optimal accompaniment. The tangy carrot and eggplant salad provided a source of brightness to the meal. Dining in the beautiful setting of the mosque-restaurant added to the overall charm of the experience. read more

Fantastic little place to relax and enjoy a glass of their famous mint tea and their sweets. I was coming back from my tour of the Catacombs when it started to drizzle so I ducked into this cafe to get a snack and beverage. The mint tea is probably their most famous drink and I see why it is. Perfectly sweetened, served in a glass but it is warm; don't try to chug it. There is a wide selection of sweets. Once you pick your table, a server will come with beverages. Then you can walk back to the entrance of the cafe and pick your sweets. The garden itself is very private and relaxing, away from the street noise. It was a nice little corner of heaven. read more

I visited the Masjid during noon prayers and decided to do my lunch. I was seated inside, place looks very nice. Food was ok not an issue there, after I was done eating I noticed small cockroaches coming from the edge of the seat and cushions. I was able to take pictures and video of it, I pointed it to my waiter and he tried to pick the roaches with his hand and was stopping me from making videos as well. He did get very rude with me since I would not stop making the video. I had eaten at that point and was about to pay my bill, i paid and immediately left. Place need to take out old furniture since roaches are living in rotted furniture. I was seated at corner right where the kitchen entrance is and register is there too. read more

Delicious, Delicious, Delicious!!! Lovely ambiance and excellent service. We went for dinner at approximately 7:30 and were quickly seated. Beautiful decor in a nice cozy setting. We started with the harissa soup that was very delicious. Slow cooked lamb with lentils in a delicious stew. Loved that they served the soup with lemon. The fresh bread was delicious dipped in the soup. For dinner had both chicken almond prune, chicken olive lemon and a lamb eggplant. All three where delicious! My favorite was the chicken prune almond. Comes with a healthy serving of couscous. Larger serving, could defiantly serve 2. Try the mint tea it's so refreshing! read more

This café is attached to Paris grand mosque, it offers a truly exotic oriental experience in the middle of Paris. The architecture and decor is authentic, I didn't try the food, but the mint tea and pastries are pretty good (very sweet). If you are a hookah aficionado (called Shisha here) or care to try it for the first time this is a good spot for that, they offer only one flavor; apple, but it's pretty good, and the atmosphere is just right for a hookah. read more

Over the years I have come here quite a few times, and this was my latest trip after a 13 year absence. I used to love the place. It went from being a hidden gem to a tourist ridden hot spot. Seating is way more cramped - to accommodate all the new comers. Service is terrible. France is not known for customer service, but here they could really give a shit if you are seated, eating, coming, or going. They just don't care. After seating ourselves in the dining area, we waited 30 min. No one helped us so I flagged the waiter down and asked for a menu. Then we waited another 20 min to order - again, had to flag down a waiter. Food took even longer than that. The food itself has declined as well. The pastille was good. We also cous cous royal. It was supposed to come with a sampling of all the meats. They forgot the chicken, over cooked the kafta kabob to where it was way too dry, and they way undercooked the lamb chop. The broth also needed salt. The saving grace is still the mint tea, and now the shisha. read more

I had heard lovely things about this hammam from a friend who studied in Paris for a semester. Her depictions made the place seem magical, and I was excited to stop here on my visit. I should have known better from the moment I paid my entry fee. I know I am in a foreign country and I don't speak the language...but I made every attempt to use the phrases I had practiced in advance, I everyone else I met in Paris seemed friendly and supportive. The ladies at the front of the hammam, on the other hand, scoffed and rolled their eyes as they took my money. It was an instructive experience to see my competence being dismissed - I could read the situation but I was powerless to react. Despite the rough start, I enjoyed soaking in the baths and laying on the heated marble benches, gazing at the the intricate mosaics on the walls, and I almost forgot this rudeness. However, when my turn for the exfoliating scrub came, the woman administering the service was again rude, overtly rolling her eyes and shooing me towards the table as though I was a chore. Some body language, ladies, is international. The worst of this was that, as she gestured for me to lie face down on the wet plastic table, I found myself face down in what seemed to be (I apologize for the description) concentrated crotch water. I felt it in my eyes, in my nose, on my mouth, and it was revolting. I tried to gesture that something was wrong, but I lacked the words to describe how horrifyingly unsanitary the situation was, and again, I was met with a huff and an eye roll. I could not take enough showers that evening to rid myself of that smell and how gross I felt. Everything else about my trip to Paris was wonderful, filled with lovely sights, sounds, and yes smells, as well as friendly and welcoming people. I know that most people must have a decent experience at the hammam, as other yelp reviews and my friend's testimony indicate...but I would caution other visitors, particularly visitors who have gotten by comfortably so far with limited French, from coming here. read more

My mother and I were so delighted by the sights and especially the flavorful food we enjoyed here. The fruit juices were a refreshing way to wash down couscous! I really loved the vegetables in broth. I don't remember exactly what else we had. We went in November and it was chilly! The courtyard area was blocked off with a thick plastic curtain. kind of weird that the reviews for the restaurant and the sauna are mixed in together. although perhaps in the same building it can confuse people as far as reviews go. I'll be reviewing the restaurant which is definitely NOT "€"!!!!!!!!!!! but at least €€. it's one of the most expensive Moroccan food i've had. tried the chicken pastry with powdered sugar. it was good and it had pine nuts. it was like 12€. it is a standout dish. also, i split a plate of couscous - combination of meats. it was like 22€ for that. the cous cous was the smallest i have tried and came with a broth with vegetables to accompany it. the meat sampler was great as well, although the lamb chops weren't impressive. the mint tea was quite good and the interior is beautiful. read more

had my first hammam experience in Tunisia and i was awed. the traditional arab bath resembled a temple: vast, marbled with stained glass and domed-ceilings. the hammam at the Grande Mosquée is just as exotic, you forget that you're in Paris. the main hall looks like ali baba's den: latticed walls, tiles w/ islamic art, wood carved lockers, a fountain in the center. here and there are clients socializing over mint tea or napping. beyond are the showers and halls of varying heat. the hot room is the largest, crowned by a cupola with a heated marble square beneath where bathers lie on, surrounded by arched niches with water fountains. the boiler room is "très chaud" and has a dipping pool with mercifully frigid water. the attendants may seem brusque at first and the treatments "tough love" but all in all, a visit here is an experience. read more

Our apartment used to be right up the street from here so my husband and I would come for the morning and evening prayers. In fact, the mosque is most serene and magical just before daybreak. Walking home and smelling the bread baking at the local boulangerie made it even better :) The architecture is just gorgeous. The numerous gardens and intricate tile work make for great photo-ops. We prayed the Friday prayer there as well and man does it get crowded- but its lovely since the women pray in the garden :) The only negative is that they dont allow "non-muslims" into the actually prayer hall. I thought that was incredibly rude. What the harm in it? It would make a great dawa opportunity Lastly, there is library but unfortunately I don't understand French nor Arabic. read more

It's been a while since I last visited, but from what I do remember, I really enjoyed the ambiance of the place. We stumbled upon this place after roaming the Catacombs of Paris. This mosque was built in honor of the thousands of North African Muslims who died fighting for France in WWI. It is also the largest mosque in France - definitely a landmark work visiting. Although it is a place of worship, there is still a sense of openness that is very inviting to even those who don't practice the religion. Keep in mind that it is a tourist spot. The architecture is beautiful - gorgeous tile work; colorful decor. It almost felt like I wasn't in Paris anymore. The desserts and pastries in the Tea Room are definitely worth trying (not expensive at all). But the one thing you MUST try is the mint tea. It's unlike anything I've ever tasted in the States - light, refreshing, and zesty. They are served in cute Moroccan style glasses. I absolutely love the outdoor seating area too. It's enclosed in this outdoor courtyard with lots of trees and greenery all around. You will also see lots of little birds fluttering about, but beware of droppings from above! I would highly suggest sitting under an umbrella. :) The only con: It took a really long time to find seating due to the high volume of tourists and worshippers. Also, service took a while too. Made my way to this restaurant for a friend's birthday a few years back and have very fond memories of the lovely evening we had. There were about 15-20 of us, and we managed to all be seated together. Before stepping inside, you will have to cross the courtyard which features a few tables, which are shaded by a few trees. It's quite refreshing to see and the inside is also tastefully decorated. We were escorted to two adjacent, circular tables and all settled down. We ordered massive quantities of very tasty and refreshing mint tea and, along with it, we pretty much all ordered couscous, a traditional Moroccan dish which comes served with spicy merguez sausages, pieces of lamb and various vegetables (carrots, raisins, zucchini). The inside decor features North African tiles and the large, metallic tables are also authentic from the old country; A real taste of Morocco without the hour flight from Paris. I was quite surprised to see how many of us could sit around these large tables. The food which arrived fairly quickly tasted wonderful and the service was prompt. The couscous was a tad spicy and very moist, the juices from the vegetables and lamb having been pored over it. We also had a side of spicy harissa, a Moroccan spicy which can pretty much 'burn a hole through your nasal passage' if not used with moderation. The prices were great as well. I had a wonderful experience there and can only hope to return at some point which I go back home to visit the folks. read more

This is a big mosque but behind it there is a very big café and sitting area (indoors and outdoors/terrace/garden). It is such a beautiful café and we had a great time sitting in the terrace surrounded by many people who are enjoying either their shisha, Moroccan mint tea or having a tagine. The state of the bathrooms were the only outlier of this amazing, historical landmark and dining experience. 3.25 stars - Grande Mosquée Tea Room Just walking by the Mosque (or, wandering aimlessly for about 45 minutes looking for the Mosque, as I did), you wouldn't expect to find such a lovely little spot. Note that the tea room is not in the front. You will need to walk around the back to find it. Beautiful tile work, great Moroccan tea (only 2 euros) and pastries, and a fabulous vibe. I felt like I was part of a little secret while there. Watch out for the crazy birds (finches, I think) - they will steal your snacks without thinking twice about it. Also, note that the public internet signals (SFR, Neufbox, etc.) are really low, so don't plan to sit and check your email there. Definitely a place to take folks who like to visit "off the beaten path" places. read more

We had dinner here one night on our last trip to Paris. My husband is a huge fan of Moroccan cuisine. This place satisfied our cravings for quality AND authenticity. We had a delicious Moroccan salad starter, the lamb cous cous, and an amazing chicken tagine with almonds and onions. Coupled with wine, and mint tea, we were veryyyy happy campers. It was yet another delightful date, and the venue is beautiful--decadent brocaded tapestries, and beautiful wooden arches. Hopefully we get to compare it to the real deal in Morocco soon! read more

Great place to visit if you like shisha/hookah, and mint tea, and don't want some modern/loungy/grimy place. You feel like a guest invited to zen-out in the outdoor garden type area and just escape from the business that is right outside the walls. We didn't even get a chance to try the "real restaurant" part which is inside but it looked promising for sure. read more

The food was fantastic, and I loved coming back to the mosque again where we could celebrate the end of our study abroad program. We had SO MUCH FOOD. We went to this place for an afternoon tea because we heard that was a very good place for tea and its pastries. We were very disappointed to say the least. When we stepped in at the entrance, there was a booth with pastries but they were of poor qualities. We bought a few of them and they placed those pastries on a paper plate. We then carried our plate and stepped inside to sit at a table. We waited for a few minutes before the waiter came by to our table with tiny glasses of tea on a platter. They charged us two dollars per glass. We ate our pastries and they were really bad, especially considering that each pastry (a tiny one) cost $2.00. To say the least I was very disappointed with the pastries, the tea, and the service. The restroom was so dirty and filthy with pee all over the floor. I do not recommend this place to anybody. It is not worth the price and for you to spend your time to have an afternoon tea. read more

A unique experience. It's like walking into a different world. Couple tips: bring a towel, your own gommage scrub (to save money having the employees do it), and soap & shampoo to wash the massage oil off after you are done. We had each gotten a small bit of chicken and some couscous and a small piece of desert that I had no idea what it was. I had some vegetarian friends who had gotten a soup, but the flavor was bland and the vegetables were lazily chopped into chunks about 2 inches wide. As I asked for the English menu it was as though I had done something wrong to the waiter who handed us the menus. The Mosquee is beautiful and definitely worthwhile for tea and a long sit. However, the hammam was not the best experience for this first time American visiter. The staff was not helpful in guiding me through the process when you purchased a package including black soap, gommage, and massage. I literally had to walk around figuring it out for myself, not too relaxing and felt it was wasteful of my euros. For those who want to try it anyway: Bring your own bikini, bathing supplies, exfoliating mit, flip flops, and towels (yes I recommend at least 2...keep 1 in your locker for after) and sit in the first steam room and bathe yourself. I promise you will thank me. Proceed to the back room for the intense steam and cold dipping pool, wonderfully refreshing, Enjoy a massage after steaming if you'd like but know it will not be like an American massage... read more

Just inside the mosque near the Jardin Des Plantes, this place was a charming taste of Morocco and had great vegetarian and Vegan options. We got the vegetarian couscous (which is what they called the huge bowl of vegetarian stew, sides of semolina, chick peas and plump yellow raisins. Plenty for two and delicious. We wanted dessert so they brought over a huge tray of exotic desserts. We chose three and shared them. Exceptional. Best ever. Very fast, friendly, and reasonable. Amazing setting with really charming courtyard. BUT food not that great at all!!!! And such a bad service. We went there during Ramadan, so we had to wait for over an hour and a half to sunset/evening to get served. But they told us that after half hour wait and after we had already ordered a tea, so we decided to be polite and stay...Guys that work there were not even trying to communicate with us in english. We were really hungry so we got some of the sweets from their little pastry stand at the entrance. Pastries we got were not fresh... Neither was the meat that we ordered later. Kefta was really dry and tasted like it was like a week old. Lamb tagine was the only eatable thing from our order, but not even close to excellent moroccan lamb tagines described in other reviews... Mint tea not good, tasted stale. NOT CHEAP AT ALL. It is at least €€.... Cool setting though, the building has really amazing vibe to it. Wish we had better dining experience.... read more

beautiful space. we went on the Saturday all women's day and the spot was packed! its amazing, its very old, and its so so steamy and good for the skin. sadly no one told us to sign up for massage right away (the list takes hours to go through when its full) so we had to really push to get our massages before we left. that said, skin feels great, and I love the energy of all these women taking care of themselves and each other. mostly folks wear bikini bottoms. bring your own towel if you can. it's 4 euros for towels, 1 euro each time you want to lock your locker, about 50-60 euros for baths, exfoliation and a short massage. all exfoliation and massage is done in open spaces so check your inhibitions at the door. read more
