But here I am being told I can't have my own water in the restaurant? That's unusual, to say the least. Minutes later, I was astounded once again when our coffee was served, and we weren't even given the customary water to accompany it. I really like the feel of this cafe and hate to be indignant over something so little, but if I am going to be treated that way, there are plenty of other cafes in Wrangelkiez that I can give my business to.

My husband was overjoyed with the wiener schnitzel - a huge portion accompanied by buttered potatoes and a side plate of salad and pickled vegetables. It's true, the service wasn't the quickest or most attentive, however that wasn't a problem for us as we were not in a rush and the server was pleasant. We found this place to be everything we wanted in a local gasthaus, with a very nice menu and an attentive staff, who will offer English help and menu if you need it. So let's look at the menu and what we did with it. The name Rippe implies a rib specialty, and I have included a shot of that page from the menu along with one of our plates (just the smaller portion, but really big enough !). The "art des hauses" preparation is mustard based (our picture), but you can get BBQ or garlic as well (must try these too next time). You can choose your sides, in this case red cabbage and potato dumplings. Wonderful ! Other great things are featured on the added menu pages below, one notable being the Schweinshaxe, a pork hock broiled to wonderful crispiness on the spot (note the 15 minute wait time on the menu). This is often confused on some local menus with Eisbein, which is the same pork hock stewed, and not at all crispy. I avoid the latter (personal taste). In addition, there are some other wonderful treats like Kasslerbratten and a very nice Schweineschnitzel. Several other items we haven't tried also beckon, but must await a return to Berlin for us !!
