Visited this newly opened establishment (not sure how newly opened) with the boyfriend and some…read morefriends. There were 6 of us total and we had a booked table for 8pm. We arrived just before 8 and they had a table ready for us in the back of the restaurant. The waiter came straight away and took our drink order. Italian cider was ordered, along with prosecco and a diet coke. Soon after we ordered our drinks, he came back to take our food order. 5 of us ordered starters, I ordered calamari and the boyfriend ordered the mussels. The calamari was a little tough, but still tasty and the mussels, I was told (not a fan of mussels), were delicious. One of our friends ordered the jalapeno poppers, another ordered the bruchetta and another ordered the mushroom starter. Everyone enjoyed the starters and on with the mains. It seemed like the mains took forever to come out, seeing as how the starters came straight away. I've been wanting lasagne a lot lately, so why not try it here. It was tasty enough, although it smelled a bit like high school lunch. The boyfriend had the bolognase pizza (which came out about 5 minutes after every one else's meals came out), which didn't look very appetising but he quite enjoyed it. Three of our friends ordered the steak, which they loved, another ordered the penne and meatballs. Everyone loved their mains. All in all, the night was great due to the fact that we were with great company. The food, although enjoyed, wasn't the best Italian I've ever had. The staff were friendly enough and didn't mind too much that we were the last out at closing. I'm sure I'd go back if we were invited out to dinner there again, but probably not again on my own.

We also got the tiramisu and the cheese cake, as well as salads. I will definitely be back. The gentleman working in the take out place was very professional and friendly and convinced me that next time we are in town, we are going to eat at the Liberta restaurant! Thank you.

Anyway, back to Bar Leo. What a great place. Reservations were made for the 11 of us (I love big families) and it being a Monday night, the restaurant as a whole was pretty empty. We took up a good portion of their back room, with plenty of seating to spare. It was snowing that night, so it was nice to be seated in a warm, cozy area of restaurant. Our coats were taken by the waiter upon arrival and we were all sat. It took us a while to look over the menu, some being a little bit slower to decide than others, but once we got the orders rolling, it wasn't too long before starters came out. Because my boyfriend and I are pigs, we started off the dinner with bruschetta and cheesy garlic bread. The bruschetta was absolutely divine, with toasted bread and fresh bright red tomatoes on top. I've never had a bruschetta that made me want to literally have that as a meal (aka order about 5 more servings of it). The cheesy garlic bread was pretty tasty as well. Across the board, the family ordered a wide variety of things. Some ordered the shaved meats and olives plate, some ordered the stuffed mushrooms, some ordered prawns and chorizo, some ordered garlic bread. Because my boyfriends sister in law ordered cheesy garlic bread and they brought out plain garlic bread instead, the plain garlic bread was given to us for free while she waited for her cheesy garlic bread. Class. For the mains, we all ordered a little bit of everything off the menu. I went with penne with tomato sauce and spicy Italian sausage. It's been a very long time since I've had proper Italian sausage, so I was well up for this meal. It was very delicious. My boyfriend ordered the calzone with chips. Ha! His older brother ordered the exact same thing. This thing was enormous, filled with everything but the kitchen sink. They both were in hog heaven! There was a mac and cheese ordered, a spinach and ricotta pasta dish ordered, veal, sea brine, risotto and pizza were all ordered as well. I don't think I heard one complaint from the whole table as we wolfed down our food. The wait staff was really nice and patient with us being such a large group. Service was prompt and food was hot made to order. The only thing I wasn't a fan of was the diet coke was flat. I didn't send it back though, so how would they have known. Anyway, we were all beyond stuffed when half of us ordered coffees/tea dessert. I didn't order any of either of those things, but those of us who did order, were well chuffed with the taste and quality of the desserts and coffees. All in all we had a really great night at Bar Leo. I'd never been here before, having only been to Linlithgow once before, but I will definitely come back here again as the food, service and over all atmosphere of Bar Leo was pretty amazing. Really great Italian food!

Did try another table but was still cold. Menu is the usual Italian fare. Nice choices and enough of them. I had the Pollo Funghi Risotto (chicken and mushroom), my young friend had the Fettuccine Bolognaise and we shared a portion of garlic bread. We both enjoyed our choices although I found it a tad expensive for what we had. Still, young friend found a discount online so that helped. The waiter was friendly and the service was good. Not sure about returning. We will see. No doubt the cold affected by feelings. I dislike being cold especially when eating.

It was a bit hectic on opening night (16th Oct 08) with all hands to the pump to keep diners happy, but the effort was appreciated and I think most folk were happy. We certainly were. The kitchen is towards the back of the ground floor and it's got an spacy open plan feel to it. Nice clean toilets (up the stairs). Not cheap but then again not too highly priced. Our normal sized childs buggy was too big to fit anywhere inside the restaurant, so had to be folded down and left inside the foyer. It looked like extra tables had been laid out to cope with the demand. Despite the odd concern over whether or not it might go walkies (it didn't), I'd say that overall it was an enjoyable experience!
