Aangan tries to do it all with an extensive menu featuring street style food "chaat", indo-Chinese food, South Indian masala dosas, goan fish curry, lots of veggie North Indian options and meat curries with choice of lamb, goat or chicken. Their beverage menu is equally extensive with various types of lassi. The typical salted, sweet and mango lassis are found on the menu but you can additionally order their mixed masala lassi, mixed fruit lassi and even jaljeera. The restaurant has an extensive wine and spirits list too. Portion sizes are large for the price you pay. Aangan means courtyard and though you enter a large enclosed restaurant there is also an attached courtyard with long tables that may be used to host functions. We ordered the chaat platter with our choice of three chaats. We got the samosa, papdi and aloo tikki chaat. The aloo tikki was the most delicious out of the three. Tender potato patty with a smoky flavour in a creamy yoghurt, tamarind and coriander chutney sauce with sliced onion, tomatoes and boiled chickpeas. The samosa filling was above average but not amazing. Papdi chaat could do with a kick to it. The goat madras curry now was one of the best curries I've had. Didn't taste like pataks. Not creamy or buttery sauce. Just a really thick masala sauce with tender pieces of goat and strong but not overpowering fllavours of mustard. The thick garlic naan was equally delicious. We couldn't have enough. Even though I was full I had to get to the bottom of the copper bowl holding the curry. I tried the masala lassi (arrived in a massive mason jar) which was as expected savoury and requires a palette that is acclimatized to drinking masala in yoghurt. The mango lassi was nice but sickly sweet. The dessert options include various flavours of kulfi, gulab jamun, carrot halwa and faluda. The faluda had a strong almost pungent flavour of rose syrup. And it was hard to finish. Should have been served in a sundae glass with a fork as the noodles were slippery. The service is polite, quick and attentive. Make a booking as the place got very full very quickly even on a public holiday. Patrons included both Indians and non Indians. They do lunch take away curry specials for 10 bucks. though some menu items can be worked on - I really enjoyed the food and service.

It stands out because it is authentic and serves freshly prepared Sr Lanka cuisine. The decor and setting is clean and understated with quiet background music playing. It's a real family business, with Mum, the chef and two daughters in front of house. My partner and I had coconut prawns as an entree which was beautifully presented on a board, sprinkled with coconut and accompanied by an interesting, smooth, mayonnaise based sauce. The prawns were perfectly cooked in their shell. Onto the mains. The lamb curry infused with exotic spices and coconut milk melted in your mouth. It went very well with the yellow rice dish, cooked with saffron, coconut milk and many subtle spices, interspersed with cashews. Their recommended vegetable dish was the eggplant moju; a twice cooked eggplant sauteed in a blend of spices, cinnamon and chilli pieces, thoughtfully allowing those like us who prefer a mild chilli to separate out the chilli pieces. 'Mum' cooks fish every night and so she brought out a lovely fish dish we had not ordered. Again, perfectly cooked and with really interesting, subtle spices. We also enjoyed the lentil curry, as an accompaniment. Arriving hungry was a bonus. A couple could order less than all this and have a really interesting, balanced meal for around $50 only. It's worth noting there are some really good choices for vegetarians here. For many , good food deserves good wine. There are various beers and liquor available but there is not yet a wine list on the menu. When this is soon finalised, it will allow those who want to enjoy an accompanying wine with such interesting food to complement the food. This small, family, authentic Sri Lankan restaurant is well worth seeking out and will continue to improve after only nine months since opening. The White Elephant is strongly recommended. No bullshitting the staff, they can sniff out any tricks patrons try and pull. Oh, by the way the food is worth waiting for. I recommend the devilled beef, curry chicken, eggplant and lentils. I myself can't eat it due to dietary restrictions but my French dude was really stoked to try it. We rocked to the little cafe around 1pm and it was chock a block full of lunching mums. No inside seats were left so we grabbed a table out front. Service was a bit slow but it was busy and they were friendly throughout. We ordered two decent if standard coffees and the steak tartare (for him), the Chapin breakfast (for me). Sadly, I wasn't impressed. The tartare was ok, if missing the raw egg that is essential in a French bistro. My breakfast, on the other hand was really disappointing. I had been happy to see plantains on the menu...you never see them in Melbourne. I'm used to having them sweeter, with an almost candied tang. These were a bit starchier and blander than I liked. I'm not sure if it was the cooking technique or if Brother Nancy is serving up a different type of plantain but it wasn't great. The plantains were served with very nice, fluffy pile of scrambled eggs, some very under seasoned black beans, and a dense, greasy piece of toast. It was all very heavy, bland, and unexciting. They're aiming for South American but there was no spice, no tangy salsa to enliven it, no fresh tortillas. It just failed utterly and at 16 dollars, was the most expensive item on the menu. No thanks. I'm not in any rush to return here. A shame, as this part of town deserves a good cafe.
