La Primera was hands down our favorite meal in Madrid this past July! We ordered a few tapas (codfish fritters, oxtail with potatoes, stewed meatballs, which was more than enough for 2ppl.) The codfish fritters were shaped like balls and were so fluffy and succulent. The oxtail with the potatoes were stewed to perfection and I could have just had that and been satisified. I would skip the meatballs the next time as the oxtails were quite heavy on their own. We ended our meal with a creme caramel which is their version of flan, what they call a lemon cake (but is really a lemon meringue pie) and a pair of cappuccinos. Both desserts were prepared perfectly but I would rename the lemon cake if I were them especially for English speaking travelers which I did notice most of their clientele was. I loved Madrid and should we ever return, would make La Primera the first stop. read more

This is a " must Go to" restaurant in Madrid. Our friend referred it to us and we are so glad that we went. The foods are delicious and the service was great! We arrived earlier than reserved the time and we were arranged to sit at bar area to start a drink. They also offered free snack while waiting on our order. My wife and I were visiting Madrid from the U.S. in April 2025 for 4 days, and we wanted to have a nice dinner before we left. I found La Primera, which was close to our apartment. Although I had made reservations for 8pm on 4/23, I thought I had made them for 4/22; of course, when my wife and arrived at the restaurant they could not find my reservation. The hostess did find it for the following day, and out of kindness, she managed to switch the days to accomodate my mistake. My wife had the lamb, I had the pork shoulder and both were excellent; I should know since I cook. The service was great, the ambiance was great, the restaurant was immaculate, along with their restrooms. Not from here, the location, restaurant and service reminded me of Beverly Hills, CA, but without the exorbitant menu prices. Great find, great restaurant at very reasonable price points. The entrance is through a corridor which brings you to the restaurant upstairs. The cuisine here slightly differs from traditional steakhouse as it gives a more experimental twist on dishes as well as a deep seafood menu. The fish cakes were one of a kind. Be sure to split as they're too rich for a single serving. The beef was great. The only real negative feedback I'd comment on was the potatoes served with the burger. We stayed nearby this restaurant but hadn't made a reservation ahead of time. So we walked up (it's on the second floor) to see if we could possibly make a reservation for that night and they told me to call a phone number. We didn't have a phone to call so they were kind enough to let us borrow their phone and helped us make a reservation. The lady over the phone said we could only stay for 1.5 hours, which was totally fine. First of all, they have a very modern look to their restaurant and it was really classy. It becomes almost too dark though for dinner. We got the Ensalada de tomate cherry, queso Jarradilla, almendras y salmorejo (salad with cherry tomatoes, cheese and tomato puree) with fried calamari for starters. Oh man, that salad WAS GO GOOD... Even on a Wednesday night, this place was booked out. We were lucky to walk in very early at 8 pm, before they'd even opened really, and got a table for 2. However, I fail to see what all the hype is about. As a gourmet establishment, it has absolutely amazing service and a fancy setting, but the neutral flavors and typical dishes we were served mostly failed to inspire our amazement. The two things that we truly loved were the complimentary bread basket (sourdough whole wheat is delicious!) and the cold appetizer "Smoked Salmon and Avacado Tartare". The tartare is beautifully plated and has a blend of creamy textures. The sauce on top was delicious, I wish there was more of it. The "Stuffed Pepper with Black Truffle" was too soft on the outside, so that it was impossible to cut into it without the entire thing exploding. The black truffle on top was a very nice touch though. The "Black Rice Paella" had squids that we're perfectly cooked, not rubbery at all and clearly fresh. I loved the creaminess of the rice and the addition of sauces on top. I only felt like it was a little too salty, but aside from that delicious. The "Rula's Hake", their signature fish dish, tasted like a blander version of kung pal chicken or orange chicken. There was something Chinese to its flavor and even how it was breaded, fried, and drenched in sauce. However, it didn't fully commit so I was left very confused. At least the sauce was good to dip my bread in. We skipped dessert - nothing inspiring on the menu either. read more

I came to La Primera with some friends, and it was hands down some of the best food I have eaten in Madrid. The ambiance is very inviting and personal, and can be intimated if desired. I think a reservation is needed, like most nicer restaurants for dinner. The times that I have gone, my friends and I ordered the croquettes, the fritters, the black squid ink rice, the egg and patatas bravas with chorizo, the hake (fish, who knew), and the cheesecake and flan. Each dish comes out in a timely manner, and is freshly made. The croquettes have a creamy inside with jamón, and the fritters with cod inside are also creamy, and surprisingly do not even taste like fish. Personally, I was not the biggest fan of the black squid ink rice, but all my friends liked it. The eggs, patatas, and chorizo make a good combination, and is a great dish for sharing. Orly hake, the menu name of the fish, is cooked well and is accompanied by a thin sauce with onions that tastes like it has a touch of lemon. Lastly, the dessert, was so delicious. My friend really liked the flan and its texture, but the cheesecake was the best I have ever had. It is not as rich and thick as in the United States, and has an almost creamy inside that is still light. The crust tastes more like a graham cracker crumble, and the top does not have sour cream, but rather is fired a little to get a very thin layer of solidified cake. Every bite is perfect, and it does not leave the stomach feeling heavy or too sweet. It is so good, and only 7€. I will definitely come back to La Primera, and would recommend it to anyone for a nice dinner with authentic Spanish food. read more

My friends and I went to brunch and got toast, coffee, juice, ​and cake, but then we were in the mood for tortilla, so we called up a friend and they said you have to go to La Primera for the BEST tortilla. we walk in to a beautiful restaurant and decide to order more. Excellent Solo Dining at the Bar I'm sure the bartender was thinking to himself during my third dinner in a row at the bar of La Primera: "surely he won't order the ensaladilla rusa once again, will he?" Well I did--and it was just as amazing as it was the prior two nights. And that's La Primera in a nutshell--it took the ubiquitous and often forgettable ensaladilla rusa and elevated it to a dish that compelled me to order it on three consecutive nights! I know, there are those out there who don't care for ensaladilla rusa--I feel for you. Luckily, there are many other great dishes at La Primera. I sat at the bar during the three evenings and had great bartenders and servers. The gin martinis were stiff, the cana was cold, and the half-portions offered on most dishes on the menu allowed me to explore over the three nights (other than the rice dishes, all other dishes can be ordered as a media racion). The bunuelos were crunchy and delicious, the croquetas unctuous, the bonito tartare fresh, and the steak tartare excellent. The only dish that missed the mark was the fried squid. Sitting at the bar also was great people watching as the restaurant is perpetually packed with couples, business clientele, and the odd business traveler dining solo at the bar. The food was absolutely 5/5 , but the service was so rushed we couldn't enjoy it! We were in the middle of enjoying the entree when a server brought us a dessert menu saying we needed to leave in 15 min. We decided against dessert because we felt so uncomfortably rushed and the server then took the plate I was still eating! It leaves a bad taste in your mouth when a restaurant is more concerned with getting more guests in than giving quality service to the ones who are dining. La comida era 5/5, pero el servicio estaba tan precipitado que no podíamos disfrutarlo. The best meal we had when visiting Madrid. The hake Muniere was simply one of the best dishes you can ever eat. The creme caramel was simply divine. My husband and I had to return there our final night in Madrid because we loved it so much. Our server even poured us a complimentary glass of cava to wish us a safe trip back to the US.
